How many vices do you have?

Anything and everything. What can or can’t you give up - REALISTICALLY - for 30 days?

Could I give up Phish for 30 days? Probably not, and that is being truthful.

And I don’t mean if you were stuck in the wilderness w/o anything and all that garbage. I mean in your normal, everyday life. And I don’t mean necessities, either, like electricity or stuff of that nature.

Having taken everything into consideration, I counted 5:

Internet
TV
Phish
Running
Sex (I’m counting the act of self-satisfaction in this category)

Oh god…go grab a coffee Neil, this could take a while…

Actually I feel I’m a man of simple needs, but these things are, unfortunately, needs…

Smoking
Coffee
Fast Food/Junk Food
Ganj
Booze
Women
Video Games
Internetz
Music
Driving (does that count?)
and this one of course:

I couldn’t imagine giving one of those things up for 30 days at this point.

BTW, Neil, I don’t think you can consider Running a vice, it’s pretty good for you I think.

I think for me it would be:

  1. Herb (i’ll never stop i swear it)
  2. sex (i can do like a week…30 days no way)
  3. Gardening (i know it’s a bit ghey, but i love plants and can’t not mess with all my hydroponic fruits and veggies for 30 days)

Up until 11 days ago this list would have included cigarettes…but i’ve quit!!!

rushing to judgment
not listening
narrowmindedness
intolerance
fear of being discovered
fear of pain, emotional and physical, and the lies generated from this
failure to recognize myself in everyone I meet
and of course, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth (no offense Sloth), Wrath, Envy, Pride

damn, I’m a mess

Those aren’t vices, those are character traits.

And I beg to differ. Running is indeed a vice/addiction. It’s not physically addicting, but neither is playing video games.

^ I don’t think a vice necessarily has to be an addiction. I just view it as anything you do that isn’t necessarily benefiting yourself or others but yet you continue to do it habitually regardless.

So if there’s benefit, it can’t be a vice because of the benefit? I can see how, say, Mountain Dew would be a vice. But the other end of the spectrum doesn’t count. It has to be bad for you? Eh…

A vice may not be an addiction, but I think it’s something that might alter your behavior or mood if you go extended periods of time without it.

only one vice for me

Would you consider going to church or helping with a charity to be a vice if your mood is altered when you go extended periods without doing it? I just don’t see how something that is good for you can be a vice. Not that I’m saying going to church is good for you, but some people might. No one is going to say that drinking and womanizing is good for you though.

Marijuana
Internet
Television
Sirius radio

I know i could go 30 days without them but they are still my vices.

^I love sirius 17

It would appear that we need to be clear on what I’m asking. Vice, by definition, would imply something that is technically immoral or degrading. An addiction is not necessarily immoral. So by the wording of this poll, I guess we should only list things that are, in fact, considered bad for us.

So it is safe to say that a vice is an addiction, but an addiction is not necessarily a vice?

You know, like that whole rectangle/square thing?

^wow, as I was reading your post I was equating it in my head to the rectangle square thing…but then I got to the bottom and read it and was amazed!

^holy cow! As I was reading your post, I was thinking of how you were probably already thinking rectangle/square, and then I finished your post and you WERE!! Not really though.

::holds post between mirrors to see an infinite number of vice>addiction>rectangle/square>amazed posts::

From Webster’s Dictionary:

Vice - 1 a: moral depravity or corruption : wickedness b: a moral fault or failing c: a habitual and usually trivial defect or shortcoming : foible

addiction - 1 : to devote or surrender (oneself) to something habitually or obsessively

It appears you are correct G2K…a vice is an addiction (immoral), but an addiction does not necessary have to be immoral

^^Is it just me, or did I just get pwnd?

I thought of it more as me doing my usual: goofing off at work and posting something mostly stupid.

^I understand completely…

::looks over shoulder for boss::

Get to work you two.

^No!! I need to configure some more machines today for terminal services…I just don’t want to…
