How to use Bittorrent

These instructions are for a PC…

PART ONE

1-First go here, http://www.utorrent.com/download.php , and download uTorrent. Click the link that says
installation program and then save to disc when prompted to. Then open the link and run the program.

PART TWO

How do i play and burn these files?

1-If you are DL live shows, they are either going to be .shn or FLAC files.
a good media player that plays both of these file formats, is winamp.
You can download it here http://www.winamp.com/player/free.php .
Go down and choose the “bundle”.

2-In order to play .shn and FLAC files in winamp, you will need the two respective “plug-ins”.
-here is the one for shn http://www.etree.org/shnamp.html (click the top link to DL)
-here is the one for FLAC http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=131643&show=reviews&page=2
open each and run after you DL them.

3-To add a show (folder) to listen to in winamp, click “library” in the lower-left, then click “add media to library” and choose the show you want to listen to.

4-ROCK OUT!

PART THREE

How do i burn a CD?

You cant burn FLAC and .shn directly to a CD, you have to convert them to “wav” files first.

1-go to http://www.download.com/dBpoweramp-Music-Converter/3000-2140-10042534.html?part=dl-dBpoweram&subj=dl&tag=button
to download dbpoweramp.
during the installation, make sure you grab the flac,.shn and wav codecs. after you download all of these, run the program.
(there is also a codec for m4a, which is for ipods, if you want to grab that, too)

2-open dbpoweramp and choose a show you want to convert. Then open the folder and highlight ALL the files. You will be prompted to choose the format you want to convert your files to. Choose wav (or wave). Make sure your destination folder is different than the folder you are converting. I usually make a new folder and put them in there. i.e 12-11-97 WAV.

3-Open winamp. Click on library > add media to library > choose the new “WAV” folder you just made. Highlight the files you want to burn and right-click them.
Then choose “send to” and then choose “CD burner on…whatever drive letter it is”.
Now, in the left column, under “rip and burn” choose your CD Burner and you will see the files you just added.
Make sure there is a blank CD in your drive and then hit “BURN”.
It will verify that you want to burn, so just hit “BURN” again and it will start!

4-Throw in CD player and drive recklessly.

traders little helper is another good program for converting shn and flac files…

man, i’ll never be able to get this to work

nor do i ever really think to use it anyway. I got shows on disc from all of you that i still haven’t listened to.

i can manage the archive sometimes though, so every now and then i’ll check in to a nice Dead show.

I am able to burn without converting files.

If you use NERO burning software, there are two plugins which allow you to burn SHN/FLAC straight to audio CDs without having to convert them yourself:
You need to sign up for this free site, but here you go:
http://www.bitburners.com/Software/Download/Audio_Software_and_Encoders/Nero_Audio_Plugins/orderby,4/
You want to get the “Shorten” and “FLAC v1.0.0.33” plugins.

Life is easy when you don’t need to wait to convert to listen or burn.

And BitTorrent opens up an entire new world to you. It isn’t just for Phish/Grateful Dead/jambands.

Check out DimeADozen, TheTradersDen, and about 25% of the torrents on SHNFLAC.

It took me a while to fully understand bittorrent, it is not like I downloaded everything and took off. It takes time and effort to first understand it, but after that, it is SO EASY. It is one of those things you may have trouble with at first, but once you understand, you will wonder why it seemed so difficult before.

don’t forget about all the movies that are available

it may seem like a lot, but i tried to be as detailed as possible.
if followed step-by-step, you’ll be straight.

Good recommendation. I use Nero for all of my DVD burning.
The only problem is that is not a free program, and i dont think
that anyone just getting into BT would have it…

I dont know know if you use shntool to fix SBE’s while burning, but Furio! fixes them on-the-fly, which is a good feature of that program.

Nero did come free when I bought my external LG DVD writer.

I had to buy a second one of those recently because the first one bit the dust.

If anyone would like, I have a FREE copy of Nero I can send you in the mail.

BT is also a great way to never use the USPS ever again!

for the movie buffs

I think we should throw this in the trading section, sticky it there maybe. We already have one there, not as thorough though.

i have a question:

i use BT. love etree, shnflac, and trader’s den. they are by FAR, the best kept secret that shouldnt have to be a secret on the internet. i dl shows all the time. then convert the files to WAv and burn to CD. BUT (and this is a big but), i delete the compressed files and the wavs from my pc and convert them to mp4 for my ipod. i use to leave them in wav but it just took up too much space. especially since i dont have my external im really forcced to. (keep in mind i dont have a dvd burner). does this make me a bad person? i know this is really looked down upon in the trading community but i do not try to circulate the mp4s. i always try to keep my ratios for shows at at least 1.0. My shnflac ratio is about 1.5. Why is is that awful if i convert the files to mp4 to save space on my computer so i dont have to buy an 1000GB external?

its not wrong at all.
the main point is sharing.if you share 100%, that is all that the community really asks of you.
even if you were archiving, there really is no need to keep the wav files.
they are quite large and take up space.
if you dont have a burner or a small HD, there isnt much room for lossless shows, so it really is no big deal.
if all you can do is keep a window up until 100%, that is fine.
not everyone has the capacity to archive.
good work!
