This was the album that got me hooked; however, I rarely listen to it anymore. Maybe once every 5-6 months.
Speaking of which…where the hell is my copy?! Better find it and listen to it at work tomorrow.

Still don’t own Hoist, but it’s funny to me people thought it was their sell out album. A LOT of big jam songs on here…
I LUUURVE the version of Wolfman’s on this with the female vocals…provides a different spin on the usual post 97 jams…
My little sister and I used to act out the words to the chorus when I was in highschool. (Although she’s not a fan, she had ALO and Hoist…I still don’t know why she had 2 Phish albums when she was 11 and furthermore, because she’s never actually liked them…I think she got my parents to buy them for her because I said I liked Phish and she wanted me to think she was cool ha) and it was through stealing those albums that the love began. We called Sample our “sister song”. First time I heard it live was in Greensboro in 03 and I did the douchebag thing and called her during the show so she could hear it. I really hate when people do that, too.
i haven’t listened to this album in at least 5 years.
Hoist Hooked me too! I was in College in No Where Iowa, Helping my boyfriend at the time strip 20 layers of wall paper off a apt he was remodeling. And I heard hoist for the 1st Time and was Hooked line and sinker to Phish and there Wonderful crazy Music. I think I listened to the Tape like 50 times while I was helping remodel. It Will all ways have a place in my Heart! At the top Baby! But I do like al the other albums as well!
I like a lot of the songs off of this record. But alot of the songs have sections on the actual album that sound extremely cheesy and un-Phishlike.
The NA-NA-NA-NA-NA in DWD, the overlap of vocals in If I could in the end;the Producer has Page and Trey sounding like REO Speedwagon or Foreigner. The lyric substitution in Axilla was unnecessary too.
They were definitely trying to please their label on this one
^ i like it especially if i wanted to be there and couldn’t! anyway love hoist was def a fav seems like forever. if I could def was the hooker for me then axilla 11,julius ofcoarse wolfman’s brother yeah that album for sentimental values is still in my top 4.
this is a great album
Love Hoist!! I’m so pumped that I finally got to hear an If I Could live. Besides Fee, If I Could was one of the first songs that really “sold” me on Phish.
i really really like demand, and not just for the split open and melt jam.
that intro riff is one of the best examples of phish. it’s just got that sound.
and the lyrics are cool too.
For some reason i don’t like Hoist at all and I consider it their worst album. The only really good songs are Down with Disease, Sample In A Jar, and the Split Open and Melt jam after Demand. I really dislike Julius and Axilla for some reason. Scent of a Mule is decent as is If I Could, but the rest are pretty
. My least favorite is the Wolfman’s. It’s too fast and it sounds much better on Slip, Stitch, and Pass.
Listening now for the first time in ages (going through a retrospective phase of studio Phish lately).
Ain’t nothing wrong with this album. I was put off by it at first years ago but I’m actually really digging this as an album.
I think it’s gonna get the blank record side treatment come vinyl time.
