I like Undermind and don’t think that it’s gotten enough credit. I LOVE the versions of Undermind, Maggies Revenge, Tomorrow’s Song, Secret Smile, Grind, SASS, just to name a few. Just thought it would be nice to have the first post about Undermind to be 100% positive.
Well said, it’s a good solid album. I absolutely love Grind.
I know what you mean, you know what I mean? Hahaha, it’s also great watching Fish talk about numbers… “It’s like 1, 5, 2…” etc haha
Undermind is fantastic.
I see a whole lot of paralells between Undermind and Let it Be. The writing, the playing, the diversity of styles on the album… oh yeah, and try holding the covers up next to each other- kinda interesting, huh?
I’ll take Undermind over any other post-Billy Breathes album. I guess what it is is that after Billy Breathes, all the albums have songs that I really like, but I don’t like the album as a whole as much. I like Undermind as a whole album.
To say i like undermind is like saying i like breathing. Undermind, to me, is amazing. Page really shines in Army of One, which i believe to be the best song on the album. Crowd Control amazing, Undermind amazing, The Connection amazing. Grind…well i’m not going to say amazing but always good if i want a chuckle. I might go as far as to say it is my second favorite phish album, second to Story of a ghost.
Undermind is the most ‘democratic’ Phish album, seeing as how there is at least one song by every member. I think it works well as an album in the old fashioned sense of an album, but I can’t say any songs really peaked my interest as things I wanted to hear live. Maggie’s Revenge is awesuma though, and has a sound I would have never associated with Phish.
Honestly I felt like the DVD was the best part of the album. Two Versions of Me feels like a wannabe All Of These Dreams or Anything But Me, and Crowd Control and Nothing really bug me for some reason. I think the first four songs and the last four are the absolute best, and wish the middle section was just some intense, long studio jam–an expanded Maggie’s Revenge. Or maybe something like they were attempting to do with The Blob from Billy Breathes.
Undermind as a body of work is a well done last effort. I don’t know how many times I’ve listened to it and said to myself, “What would these tunes sound like if they were given the proper space to grow and evolve in a live rotation?” Each member of Phish brought something to the table for us to feed on. I guess I’ll be left to wonder about the directions that are yet to be explored…
Today I sing tommorows song…what was on someones mind…
Two months later and I decieded to revive this thread, because, I TOO LIKE UNDERMIND.

I like Undermind… just not Love. To me it feels all over the place, and heading in no general direction.
Undermind is a solid album. A good last stand.
well lets hope they take their cue and come back for an abbey road.
was so disappointed by undermind. round room pulled up my spirits and made me think they could still pull out some shots… but undermind just fizzled. what a sad end. that and coventry… what a mess. (and if any of you left laners are reading… i shake my fist at thee)
ok i am going back to the topic of liking undermind, i have been seeing alot of people putting down this album so i am going say a few good things about this album. 1. my best friend a huge green day fan listened to this album and fell in love with it. He said that of all the phish that he had ever heard this is the only album that he thought was any good. I made him listen to rift one day then story the next . He stood by his Undermind is the only good phish. Now most of my friends listen to it and each tell me why a different song is the best song on the album SASS,Nothing, Crowd Control are their favs. I still with have to go with army of one combining pages amazing voice and fantasic lyrics to treys soulful guitar work just amazing. One of my friends said that his fav was 2 versions of me which has been horribly unpopular among most phish fans.
how anyone can like Maggies Revenge is beyond me
Maggie’s Revenge is cool. I don’t think the album version did it justice, though. what is it, 2 minutes, tops? Hell, Blitzkrieg Bop is longer than that! I think a live, drawn out version would be good, however.
I like Undermind… nice solid rock album with nothing to compare it to. Phish always takes different approaches on studio efforts and I say Hats off to them for that. Grind is off the HOOK!
the whole album is amazing
It’s hard for me to listen to Grind. I love it, but knowing that it’s the end… that’s tough.
Speaking of Maggie’s Revenge. it seems like starting from Farmhouse songs that typically are jammed out long on the studio album were kept quite compressed an example would be Moma
A lot of songs were way shorter on albums than live. Manteca, Piper, Wolfman’s…
