Beer reviews (in the order I drank them)
Red Stripe–we’ve all seen ads for this on TV. I’m here to tell you that it’s a pretty personality-less lager (not quite ale but not quite pilsner) that I wouldn’t go out of my way or expense to drink. I do like the bottle though; reminds me of an old timey medicine bottle. 2 out of 5.
something Black Rice Beer–Imagine a beer made from rice. Then imagine it’s black rice. This beer was really cheap and surprisingly good. It had the texture of an ale but with the taste and character of a stout or porter. You can really taste the black ricey-ness, too, though it’s more of a brown rice actually. 4 out of 5.
Anchor Steam Ale–As one of America’s oldest microbreweries, Anchor Steam is pretty well known. I’ve never had any of their beer before, least of all their flagship ale. But man did I like this beer!! It definitely has that microbrew hoppiness to it but its not overwhelming. I love the color and taste of it, too. 5 out of 5.
Tequiza–Made by Anheuser-Busch (spelling??), this is essentially beer made with blue agave (which is, of course, what is used to make tequila) and some lime flavoring. Ugh did I hate this!! I have never in my life thought about pouring the rest of a beer down the drain once I’ve tasted it. Even Natural Light is more palatable than this. It has a taste like a watered down marguerita and an aftertaste like a fruit breakfast cereal (in a bad, processed way). Disgusting and a rip off considering it was only slight less expensive than the other beers I tried. 1 out of 5.
Road Dog Scottish Porter–You may know this beer from the company, Flying Dog, which has ties to Hunter S. Thompson and features kick ass label illustrations by Ralph Steadman. At any rate, I greatly enjoyed this beer. I wouldn’t drink it with a meal because it does have that porter heaviness to it, but it was damned refreshing after the Tequiza. 4 out of 5.
Lion Stout–Mmmmmmm is the first word that comes to mind. It wasn’t because I had already had 5 beers. Lion Stout is seriously delicious brew. It is a dark, dark stout with plenty of body and texture, to be sure, but it has such an amazing aftertaste–like chocolate and coffee having hot, hot sex–that even people who don’t like dark beers may love it. This and Anchor Steam Ale are my two new favorite beers.
