Is it acceptable....

no…no…jesus man…no.

ya

How about 8th cousins? Welp, that’s what happened with my grandparents, making my mom’s generation their own 9th cousins, and my generation our own 10th cousins…

This all came out through one of my uncle’s geneology work on the family.

I voted no above, too close to not know better.

My gosh… no.

I think I will not like the answer if I ask why you are thinking about this as well… ;D

First cousin marriages were banned out of ignorance, and the taboo just became a cultural standard. Technically, there’s little health reason not to, only societal pressures against it.

That was my next question (health repercussions).

Hell, in Austria dudes have daughters, imprison them in their basements, and then father 7 children by them…

so compared to that this seems like a sitcom

no

depends, is she hot?

this is my reasoning as well.

lol…that post has win written all over it.

Exactly fone. Taboo for no real reason. The genetic probability of birth defect in people are 2-3% … in 1st cousins its 4-6% or the same as a 40 year old woman having a child. So by the logic that we should ban 1st cousin marriages based on increased birth defects we should also ban women over the age of 40 from child bearing.

Albert Einstein married his first cousin as well as Charles Darwin. Teddy Roosevelt and Eleanor were 4th cousins and shared the same last name.

An increase in birth defect probability does increase if offspring of 1st cousins procreate with their first cousin. The probability decreases with 2nd cousins couples and so on.

I bring this up b/c a friend of mine confided in me about their parents being cousins. They’ve been living in shame and fear about this. I dispelled the myth and made them feel better about themselves. People who discriminate over this sort of thing simply don’t know the facts.

Many first cousin marriage laws were put into effect before knowledge of genetics.

First cousin marriage is legal in all of Europe, Canada, Mexico.

Consanguine/consanguinity- related by blood, relationship by blood.

1 in 1000 couples in the US are 1st cousins/ 4 in 1000 in Japan.

Among rich land owners cousin marriage was a way to keep the wealth and land in the family. In rural areas the cousin was the first available line in looking for a spouse. We are all basically descended from cousins. Incest is where the real taboo should lie and for good reason… incest defined as brother/sister and relation w/ parents and grandparents, defects and hereditary disease increases quite a bit in such relations… I can’t pull facts on this but I don’t think thats needed.

I just find it curious that in this day and age we are more likely to think and feel a man sticking his penis in another man’s ass is more acceptable then cousin marriage.

If you really want to man, I guess there is no reason anyone should care. I just feel that marrying within your own family is not right, but I don’t feel the need to inflict my moral stance on anyone else.

^word.

Well I’m not saying I’m marrying my cousin… ummm haven’t given that one much thought. I’m just saying I don’t find it icky if thats what some people do. Given the facts. People feel there is something wrong with it and all evidence points that there isn’t. I just brought it up knowing the majority would feel its icky even among the hippie crowd who pride themselves on thinking outside mainstream culture.

Again I find it interesting when people believe in things that have no basis in fact and reason. They just ‘believe’ because thats how they ‘feel’… because they’re part of a group or society that ‘feels’ that way too… instead of thinking for themselves about any given subject.

So it was personal when I found out about this friend and all the embarrassment that came along with it. The kids had nothing to do with it, they were just born into the relation but harbored all this guilt due to the stigma. I felt bad and was just trying to help. Then as a little experiment I wanted to see what peoples gut reaction was to the topic and only 2 people saw it for what it was. So no wonder this family lives in some sort of shame, most people, if they knew, look down on them. Anyway I’m not that worked up about it I just found the whole topic interesting. I wouldn’t marry my cousin… even if she was totally hot… well maybe :stuck_out_tongue: I’m with Brett on this one. ;D

food for thought indeed. I think if I were in the situation and really thought it was love I wouldn’t stop just because of being cousins.

Generally speaking I do find it a little odd, and I don’t mind admitting that’s largely because of that’s how society feels and the culture I’ve been brought up in, that’s part of what makes up my worldview whether I like it or not. I don’t object to people doing it if that’s what they want to do though.

Considering my mom was adopted there is always going to be a chance that I could end up dating a cousin without me knowing, and I guess there wouldn’t be anything wrong with that per se…saved myself with a per se.

hell my cousin’s vag was the first i ever saw.

you know…that doctor game.

damn i wonder what she’s up to tonight.

should get me a little.

I don’t know Neil apparently there were all sorts of cousin marriages in the bible including Mary and Joseph… from what I read… on the internet… you know, pooncuz.com. Anyway cousin marriages are acceptable according to the bible.
