Jerry Garcia: 8.1.1942 - 8.9.1995

Jerry week begins.

I was at the 7.9.95 show and for a moment was about 10 feet away from him. We all yelled “JERRY” and he turned around and waved and I remember his sallow skin and how worn out he looked. He died about a month later and is said to have died with a smile on his face. Maybe he was smiling because he knew of all the joy he brought to us. Or maybe he knew he was going to that great gig in the sky.

(((((((((( Jerry ))))))))))

there is a free “jerry day” festival celebrating his life this weekend about a mile from my house at the jerry garcia ampitheater here in san francisco. melvin seals and the jgb backing band will be playing among others.

i’m kind of bummed that i’ll be out of town for it since it’s a cool venue and i’ve heard jerry day is a blast but i will be seeing phil on the east coast so i can’t complain too much.

happy birthday, capt trips! fare the well…

gdradio is playing Jerry all day

Happy Birthday to my biggest musical influence!

Will be playing at a Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash tonight in downtown Knoxville.

Looking forward to it.

I’ve never really been GD or Jerry obsessed like some people, but I truly appreciate his greatness. I’ll listen to a GD show today in his honor.

Marley - I’m running my 2nd 10K next Saturday…8/9…I’ll be sure to include a few Jerry tunes for extra inspiration!

Here’s to one of the truly underrated great men of our lifetime.

Thanks for enriching us all.

Happy Birthday, Jerry! Your soul lives on in my heart, brother. Thank you!

:’(

I never knew you
But then who really did?
If you were at all like me
You managed to keep yourself hid
A patchwork quilt of a life
Memories embroidered
On your soul

So please forgive me
For putting you in my song
But the spirit she moves me
In fact she pushes me along
It’s a patchwork quilt of a life
Can’t stop the river
Just let it roll

We were at Jones Beach
When we got the word
Saddest sound that I ever heard
The bluest note that nobody could play
Ravens sang with us that night on the stage
Tears of sadness, tears of rage
But nobody spoke, we all felt old
And in the way

So walk beside me
Or above me, I don’t know
These days it sure seems
I’m lost where ever I go

God, how could you, I heard someone say
And what do we do with our lives now anyway?
Now that our North Star can no longer be found

But there’s a banjo moon in a tie-dyed sky
Hippies dance and babies cry
Church bells ring as a silver-haired angel look down
And the blood of his music runs through the veins of our guitars
Bright lights, Dark Star

I never knew you
But then who really did
If you were at all like me
You managed to keep yourself hid

For that being Jer’s birthday… it sure is a Bob-tacular looking setlist.

I was at this show too. Last time I took LSD.

Sniff…good ole Jerry. He’s like a kind old grandfather…a kind old grandfather who ROCKED.

So many holidays get over-hyped and very commercialized.

Not this one.

Probably my favorite celebration of the year.

Happy belated birthday Jerry!

So the “Run for the Roses” video that used to be on youtube is no more. It had music from the 05-05-1982 Jerry Garcia and John Kahn show and a bunch of Jerry pictures. I loved that video and that show is pretty good too. I’m definitely throwing it on later tonite.

Here is a different Run for the Roses -

Fare thee well Papa Bear.

just thought I’d bump this right now, since I’m listenin’

bam!

man this music is doin’ me good right now…fuckin’ girls

cripes

but all is well…

I’ve been having all these vivid dreams lately, since 10K this year pretty much. Last night I dreamt that I met Jerry. I don’t have a lot more to add to that story, but it was very vivid and very lucid at the same time.

^I feel the same way man. If I could somehow channel all of my dreams and write a journal detailing all of them…I think that would help me, because I never remember them completely.

Well tomorrow’s kind of the big day. It’s the Regina Folk Fest this weekend, so I’ll be smoking joints in the park and celebrating life and music. I try to do it everyday, but I’ll make a special point of it tomorrow for sure.

I picked up my things and went outside
A man that I loved up and died
I couldn’t believe that after all of this time
I never knew the man but he was a good friend of mine
So long, i’ll see you down that long dark river
Floating on that lining in the sky
I’m lucky, lucky enough to have heard you play your song
So long, Jerry, so long

Always be together
Rolling down the track
Always and forever
Never lookin’ back
I got my guitar and went to the river
Saw alot of people just dancin’ around
I took off my shirt and jumped in the water
U always flew so high, now you’ve finally left the ground
So long, i’ll see you down that long dark river
Floating on that lining in the sky
I’m lucky, lucky enough to have heard you sing your song

So long, Jerry, so long
