Johnny Depp is The Riddler

what may be the biggest casting spoiler in recent film history, Michael Caine has revealed that Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman will be playing the two villains in the sequel to The Dark Knight, reportedly titled, Gotham. Director Christopher Nolan has been in hiding since TDK’s release, and has been notoriously secretive and non-committal about a possible sequel. That all changed when Caine gave an interview at the Toronto Film Festival on Monday. Splash Page MTV reports:

In an interview with MTV News conducted just hours ago at the Toronto Film Festival, Michael Caine - there to promote “Is There Anybody There?” - seemed to confirm rumors that the next installment of the “Batman” film franchise will feature two very well-known names playing the roles of The Riddler and The Penguin. “They’ve already got them in mind,” said Caine, when asked who he’d like to see take up arms against the Caped Crusader. “It’s Johnny Depp as The Riddler. And The Penguin is Philip Seymour Hoffman. I read it in the paper.” So Caine is like the rest of us, reading gossip in the tabloids, right? Except for one thing…according to the actor, he confirmed the news through the studio itself. “I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, 'How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath - Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, 'Shit, they’ve done it again!”

I call Shenanigans.

The Riddler maybe, but Christopher Nolan has already said that he would never do the Penguin because he considers the character to be “too far-fetched.”

From what I’ve heard, shooting is starting in January so I don’t really know how secretive it all has been.

Johnny Depp will pull off that role, great choice.

I sure hated danny DeVito as the Penguin in Burton’s film. Terrible batman installment that movie was

i never thought too much of the riddler. he’s just some skinny, goofy guy in green tights constantly spouting nonsence. nothing very menacing about him to me. actually, my two favorite villians in the batman universe have already been used: scarecrow and joker. but i’m sure if anyone could make the riddler interesting, johnny depp could. and i think philip seymor hoffman is a fantastic actor. far-fetched or not i’d love to see him as penguin.

I can’t explain it, but I much, much, much prefer all things Superman over Batman.

In fact, other than the original Batman w/ Keaton, I haven’t seen more than 10 minutes of any subsequent Batman movies.

Johnny Depp is a wonderful choice. He’s always been one of those actors where you only see his character and not him in his movies. Good examples would be him as Jack Sparrow or as Hunter S Thompson in Fear and Loathing. And, I agree…I never thought much of the Riddler either but hopefully they will put a dark tone to him.

I am a bit reserved about them having two villains in the movie. Maybe it’s me but one villain is more than enough to carry a movie…more than one seems to detract from one another. Why not save the Penguin for his own movie? And I kind of liked DeVito as the Penguin…they did well in making him more of a creature rather than the prim and proper Penguin from the comics. The movie wasn’t that great but I liked him.
