Anyone work out the chords for this one yet? I can’t find them online
Hey, ‘meh’ people, this song is written to us. How can it be taken so negatively?
But then again, I HATED Undermind a lot, but now I LOVE most of the songs on Undermind. I guess that’s just how it goes. But this song to me means, “We were all sad, sorry, now it’s here again, we’re all together again, we’ve always wanted you to be happy, now we can be again!”
This song is quite beautiful. It has grown on me. If Tom wrote the lyrics, Maybe it’s about Tom’s sister or someone close to him and the band…???
definitely a Dear Prudence feel to it
Definately has Waste feel to it. Honestly everytime i hear it i like it more.
The Red Rocks version is great. They jam it out a bit. This could develop into a closer.
this is a song about loss. It is about burying your love ones. You could substitute a pets name, a brother/sisters/mom/dads name. Listen to the heartfelt way trey is saying goodbye to this person he loved so much. When he says he wants you to be happy he means it. If you don’t like this song you may be a sociopath
Agreed with this statement.
Haha.
But seriously, this song is starting to grow on me. Looking forward to the studio cut.
i totally agree w/ the red rocks statement posted above. after the four days were over i remember enjoying this tune a lot more then some of the other new ones that were played that weekend. holy frigging fart…that was such an amazing four days…
OK, I’ll admit I came here just to do some Joy bashing. I have only heard it a few times and have perceived it as VERY cheesy. Reading the thread and the lyrics have made me soften just a bit. Enough to at least give it a few more listens before I form a more lasting opinion.
I actually Love this tune, i have been listening to the version from darien nonstop and its great
simple song but really really good
not sure why so many dont like it?
^
Prolly 'cuz in some regards it is slightly cheesy, along the same lines of a, say, “Waste,” or “Wading.” Lyrically, I like it (although some lines are kinda ghey). Musically, I dig it too.
^ i hear ya man, but it still is a great song, yea some of the lyrics are a bit ghey, but i also dig waste and wading, i really love all phish, just not esther the only tune that just not do it for me
just a great new tune, most bands that have been doing it for years like this have all of their good stuff in the beginning, but not these guys, this is a great album i think, and i cant wait to see what the future holds
Yeah, you would.
I’d take a “Wading” over “Esther” any day.
Yeah. Suck it.
^ I concur
I really love Joy now. The Gorge version completely sold me…as I imagine it did a lot of people. The guy in front of me was rolling really hard, but he turned around after and told me and my friends that “I’ve seen them play this song about four times now and I was never really a fan, but I think I get it now…this is your song too guys.” We laughed a lot; I don’t know why. But yeah…I love this song now too.
^ hahahahaha, that is hilarious, i would have laughed so hard at that
i really do dig this song
Love this song. Loved it from the first time I heard it. Somewhere there is that thread about “ranking the new stuff” and it’s right up there around the top. Just love it, but I think that it touches a nerve because it’s such a personal song for Trey, but it’s also very personal for me as well.
Love how they are starting to jam it out a bit, and think it’s a really great encore song. Especially if it’s followed by 2 powerhouse rockers.
And I was listening to Esther studio cut on the way to work today, and I gotta say, I love that song.
Give me an Esther over Wading on any day that ends in “y”. Thank you!
