What a groovy little album. Aside from Tweezer and Stash, it doesn’t have many big jam songs on it. Definitely doesn’t have the flow of Billy Breathes or the great production of Round Room, but it flows really well. Plus it’s nice to have Glide and The Mango Song on one CD!
And the Landlady.
Man, I hope that when the second hiatus is over, they revive the poor old Mango Song…
They played it at IT. That may or may not have been the last version.
Probably my favorite Phish album if you listen to the whole thing.
Yeah for me this album defanitly takes first. Every song on it kicks ass in its studio and live version. Whereas a lot of other Phish albums it seems you either get one or the other. For me and studio Phish this get the most play. Its close with Billy Breathes though.
I don’t think you can compare this album to billy breathes. It is completely different. Where as Billy Breathes is acoustic, jammy, and 47 minutes long, Nectar has alot of the early compositonal style along with the new song oriented style… I’ll take nectar over billy breathes, but I won’t compare them.
I’d say Picture of Nectar has one of the best tracklists out of Phish’s albums and flows very nicely through the album.
Yeah I was not trying to compare them, I will agree that they are nothing alike. I was sayign that it was close with Billy Breaths for my favoriet Phish album. I am playing studio Phish I just usually reach for one of these.
for me p.o.n. sounds like a bunch of songs thrown together to make an album. it doesn’t have continuity to my ear. good songs no doubt, but not one of my favorite albums.
on a side note, an interesting factoid about the chalkdust… listen close to the vocals and you’ll notice trey’s voice sounds a bit off… much lower than his norm. to get this effect they played the vocals through a rotating speaker (similar to the old hammond speakers). it adds an interesting texture to the sound.
I figured they just slowed the tape down.
