Kids these days...

The cover story in Newsweek is called “The Trouble with Boys” It is about how boys are doing poorly in school and on standardized tests. It begins like this…

“Spend a few minutes on the phone with Danny Frankhuizen and you come away thinking, ‘what a nice boy’. He’s thoughtful, articulate, bright. He has a good relationship with his mom, goes to church every Sunday, loves the rock band Phish, and spends hours each day practicing his guitar.”

but…

“…once you get inside his large public Salt Lake City high school, everything seems to go wrong. He can’t stay organized. He finishes his homework and then can’t find it in his backpack. He loses focus in class… Last year Danny’s grades dropped from B’s to D’s and F’s…”

Hmmmm, I wonder what Danny’s problem could possibly be…

That’d be my guess.

i think that happens to every high school kid at one time or another…especially if they are on the pot ICC. Danny needs to straighten his act out or life will never be the same, atleast thats what newsweek makes it seem like. I would advise him to listen to more phish, that will help him for sure…

Danny Dope Head. lol

^lol more pot + more phish = Danny “the nice boy” again.

Me got ADD

Sounds like Danny has gotten to the “what the hell am I doing here” point in life.

You tend to get to that point first, and then try things like pot, beer, porn, sports, music, dance, gangs, science, religion, e, meth, h, wodka, video games as you search for your very own personal meaning to life, as opposed to the one you’re programmed to adhere to.

Breaking the automated processes is good. Believing that the alternate realities you find are ultimate realities, is just another iteration, another turn of the wheel, bound to bring you back to the “what the hell am I doing here” point in life.

sounds like danny is in the “damn this is good shit…hey man, don’t we have homework to do…what homework man, just spark up another one”…dooo dooo deeee…marijuana effects the memory…he’ll come back to reality sooner or later but he just just enjoy for the now

i bet that kid posts on here.

Danny sounds like a pretty cool kid to me, let’s get him over here!

most of us have been there at one time or another. poor danny!!

Danny should be our mascot. A perfect example of all of us who dropped out (Leary style) and dropped into the Aquarium. There is a little Danny in all of us.

“Can’t find his backpack”…man that brings me back…that’s why I stopped bringing a backpack to school in grade 11…Danny sounds fine to me.

Sex, drugs and rock and roll = D’s, F’s and a spotlight in newsweek. I got jipped… I never got my Newsweek spotlight.

We should send Newsweek this thread, becuase they are obviously clueless, and we have all the answers!

Its just funny how they say hes such a good kid at first, but as soon as his grades slip hes automatically unorganized , and must be doing the wrong thing. What if he’s upset about a girl or something and is just having trouble focusing? I feel bad for Danny and if could speak to him I would let him now that he is a great kid, with exceptionally good taste in music. But what do I know? newsweek knows everything.

i saw this too…kinda pissed me off. the actual school part of high school sucks terribly…you question it…like wow, i’m spending 7 hours a day sittin in classrooms, and most of this information i will forget as soon as it is taught. this kinda stuff just makes you angry enough to just say fuck it. when you recognize the bullshit aspects of high school, you don’t really feel like putting the effort into school that you used to. you could, but damn…if you start doing all the work, much busy work, you start to feel like you are wasting your life away. these realizations don’t make you dumber at all, and thats what i hate about this article…grades and test scores do not reflect so many parts of intelligence, and as far as i know, girls and boys both grasp this concept, but i’d say a lot more boys than girls actually put this realization into action…by not doing much work.

whatever…2 cents from a 2nd semester hs senior.

^
well, good points.

also, as soon as you get out of HS, you’ll realize that you know absolutely nothing about life.

I didn’t mean for that to sound like a put-down, I just meant that when kids get out of HS and go to college (or basically start living on their own), they’ll realize that HS was a joke in every sense of the word.

I think it is a bullshit excuse to blame pot-use for dropping grades in school. If school means a lot to you, and you can’t succeed, or keep your grades up while getting high frequently, then don’t smoke as much. I smoke often, and have remained on the deans list the last 4 semesters, and when I started smoking pot in high school, my grades didn’t drop there either. Simple solution=don’t get high until after school, and don’t spend all night hanging out and getting stoned the night before a test!!

I don’t mean to get all serious, because this thread is obviously part jest, but I just hate it when people in my life assume I am going down the drain because I enjoy smoking a plant. They usually shut up when they hear what my GPA is though

^ Very true…bad grades in high school do not translate into bad grades in university or failure in life overall…and good grades in high school do not always translate into good grades in university (I am a shining example of that) or success in life…
