Last Train to Clarksville - RIP Peter Tork

While it’s possible Kevin and I are the only ones left here that care, I would be remiss to not mark the passing of my favorite Monkee with his own thread.

I got into them when they were in syndication in the late 70s/early 80s. I was just a little kid, but I had a couple records and loved the show. When the MTV reunion excitement struck, it was all I could do to keep up with the blank VHS tapes. I have the DVDs and all the albums & remasters. Somehow they’re still one of my favorites.

Peter was great. I guess I saw him three times; once in like 1987 in Warwick RI, once in Lincoln RI on the Good Times tour (2016 or 2017) with just Micky, and then once in Woonsocket with his Shoe String Blues band, in 2010. I recorded that gig, and then got talking to him afterwards about sending him the recording. He gave me an email address to send him a link, but of course I don’t know if he got it or anything …

Anyway, maybe the most under-appreciated and under-represented of the Monkees, he still had a number of Monkees songs and they were pretty great. I think he was my earliest favorite Monkee - although it’s kind of gravitated to a Mike/Micky tie score over the years.

Peter’s Monkees songs:

Your Auntie Grizelda (not my favorite, but it was one that made it to the TV show)
For Pete’s Sake (one of the best Monkees tunes of all IMO; closed every episode of season two)
Shades of Gray (w Davy on co-lead vocal)
Peter Percival Patterson’s Pet Pig Porky (spoken)
Can You Dig It?
Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again?
Gettin’ In
Since You Went Away
I Believe You
Little Girl
Wasn’t Born To Follow

Non-album (bonus or compilation)
Come On In
Merry Go Round
Tear the Top Right Off My Head
Lady’s Baby
