Learning to Play guitar

Ok, I really want to learn how to play guitar. Not really to become a rock star or to start a band and tour the world. I just want to learn how to play for personal enjoyment right now, kinda like a hobby to help past my lonely times here .

Should I start out with an acoustic or a electric guitar? The main issue I have is I live in an apartment and I don’t want to be disturbing others with my playing. So how can I pull this off with an acoustic? If I got an electric, I could plug headphones into my amp and practice quietly to others here.

Also, is it ok to buy an used instrument? I was leaning maybe to Fender Strat something simple and basic. Nothing too fancy or high priced.

Any suggestions on what to get for an newbie? Also is taking lessons worth it?

I need all the help and advice I can get, so please fill me in on what I need to know.

Thanks!!

Dan

Also, I must add I really would like a semi Hollow electric guitar if possible…suggestions?

that’s cool that you want to take up an instrument man!

i think you could go with an acoustic if you’re not planning on playing it as loud as you can. i personally think it’s best to start on an acoustic if you’re just learning, but there’s no reason for my logic. you’ll know your guitar when you see it.

look around in some good used music stores. every town’s got at least one. you can find tons of used stuff in good/perfect condition. hell, check ebay or just google ‘used guitars’. you’ll find a shit ton of stuff to look through.
here’s a website with a bunch of not-too-pricey stuff, both used and new. they’ve got a lot of really unique guitars too. www.fattoneguitars.com

and lessons are of course invaluable when you’re just beginning. here’s another website that has like, thousands of recorded guitar lessons ranging from absolute beginner to totally advanced, in just about any and every style you care to play. www.guitartricks.com

i think you have to join that one to get the lessons though. it’s somewhere around $10 bux a month, but that’s a lot less expensive than traditional lessons and you have access to it 24/7.

good luck!
