From Philadelphia…I’ll give you the good and the bad…

Good:
Big city but rent isn’t too bad. I pay 850 for a really big 1 BR.
Very cool neighborhoods…a lot of emerging areas that have a lot of character
Good food - And not just cheesesteaks & hoagies. There quite a bit of nationally know restaurants here…not that I can afford to go to them though.
Close to SOOOO many things. NYC is 2 hrs. away, skiing an hour away, the Jersey Shore/Atlantic City about an hour away, DC 2 hours away.
Lots of hybrid suburb/urban neighborhoods like mine. I have a parking lot but live in the city.
These places are served by regional rail which is pretty good about being on time.
People are friendly. Lots of strangers will just talk to you in a bar. Nice people…

The Bad:
Everything is dirty.
Your car will get broken into almost anywhere.
Subways and Buses suck ass.
For every good neighborhood there’s a shithole 4 blocks away in any direction
Traffic on I-76 is unbearable from 7 am - 11 am and 3 pm - 7pm. Unbearable.
People make “Rocky” or cheesesteak jokes when they find out you live here.
The sports teams ALWAYS blow it.
Property prices are starting to go way up = gentrification = could turn into a dirtier version of Manhattan in 10 years = loss of character
UPenn people are really snotty.
Everything really is dirty.

I think it’s an acquired taste to be honest.

Vegas: It’s all good except the summer weather. If you can put up with averages of 105, then you’ll do fine.

I really can’t find that other “Where are you from?” thread…so

Regina, Saskatchewan CANADA
Info: Capital of Saskatchewan…Pop: approx 200,000…

Pros: hmmm…wait…I’ll think of one…okay I got some…good pizza…good weed…um…very little risk of any kind of natural disaster…and it is really cheap to live here (1 bedroom apartments from $350/month)

Cons: It’s really far away from anywhere…it’s fucking cold…shitty public transportation…high sales taxes…high property taxes (and rising)…Little to no entertainment (particularly in terms of live music)…High crime rate (highest per capita in Canada)…Way too many police (and yet so much crime, figure that out)…

Nicely put.

I’m not sure if anybody want’s to hear what the sioux falls and surrounding areas of good old S.D. are like… You may get bored.

Ann Arbor: Cool place to catch shows. LOTS of stuck-up college kids from out of state. Cold weather in teh winter and nice weather in teh summer.

Ft. Lauderdale is a great town set up on a platform of flat-land in between the ocean and the swamp creating a unique, moist climate that only Floridians can seem to tolerate. It has a healthy night-life and plenty of bars to go to if that’s your kind of thing.
but on the downside the people are generally from other places- total stuck-up, greedy assholes that like to show off how rich and glamorous they can make themselves look and how they’re better than you for it. everything is pretty expensive and over the past 10 years it has been attempting to become the new Miami with dozens of new high-rise condos being built on what used to be family establishments, parks and historical sites.

and not too many good tours come down this far into the peninsula.(Cypress and the Miami New Years '04 was the only Phish SoFla saw since '96).

and the hurricanes…by god the hurricanes.

i’ve lived here for my whole life, i’ve had a good time here, but i’m ready to try something else.

West Lafayette, IN
Population - about 30,000

Location - about 50 miles NW of Indianapolis, IN.

Info - home of Purdue University. Go Boilers!! (even though I didn’t attend school here, I grew up a Purdue fan). West Lafayette was formed in 1888, and is NOT a suburb of Lafayette, IN. Residents/Natives include Neil Armstrong, Bob Griese, and Orville Redenbacher. Axl Rose was born in Lafayette, as was Shannon Hoon.

I hate living in OKLAHOMA! It’s full of a bunch of rednecks and college sports fans. And country music. OU and OSU…that’s all there is. It fvcking sucks. I miss Dallas and Austin. I miss cultural identity. I miss people who have lives beyong sports and athletics. I want to move back to someplace where college athletics is an afterthought…not a priority. If we weren’t making kick ass money off these morons, I wouldn’t be here. God, i miss living in a cool place…

I’m from Chicago and love it here.

It’s a big city but has a small-town vibe.
Very Clean and alot of parks & recreation. Very dog friendly.
The best comedy (Second City, Improv-Olympic, Chicago Improv Festival). These guys write for the Daily Show, SNL, Mad TV. If you like comedy this is the place.
The local theater is great as well.
Chicago supports the arts and you can find some great artists around the city.
Summers are great, only an ocean beats the lakefront. If you bike, there is a path all the way up and down it, beautiful women/men all the time on the lakefront.
There are neighborhood festivals all summer and each one is different. You really get a good idea of the wide range of people and cultures here.
I’m not sure what/who you fancy, but Chicago is also very gay friendly. We are definitely a diverse city.
The Music. It’s the blues capital and you can walk into any club any night of the week and a blues legend will be playing. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stumbled into a club to hear the most awe inspiring music being played to a group of 20 people.
Great Jazz clubs. If you like electronic music, well we and Detroit created it (with help from London) and you can still find some great clubs and places to hear it.
The local music scene is coming back around, but Chicago draws everybody so it’s not hard to find what your looking for.
Food. I don’t need to tell you about our pizza. You can find great Thai food anywhere and well it’s like New York in the fact that you can get anything delivered to your door.
The CTA (public transportation) is good. It takes you within walking distance of everywhere. The bus system is great as well.
Some drawbacks are the weather. Winters are sometimes brutal, this year has been surprisingly warm though. It can get humid in the summer as well. It’s not as bad as it seems, I like winter so I really don’t mind. It can be a shock to someone who has never seen snow or a good blast of lake effect snow/cold. You won’t die from it.
The women can be a bit trendy and judgmental and there are your meat-head/jocks, but you find them anywhere so that’s nothing new. You can find your kind of peeps though, so don’t think we are all ESPN crazy. It just takes time to find your niche. But once you find it, people love it here.
Parking is hard the closer you get to the Loop and you will get towed alot if your not careful where you park.
Seriously, they love to tow people hear and they got new trucks that can move your car without the guy even getting out. I saw a car towed in 30 seconds.

When it comes down to it your going to have alot of the same problems any city has. If you want trouble it will find you. As long as you have a good head on your shoulders you should be fine. It is a City and people will take advantage of you so you need to keep that in mind. Don’t walk home alone at 3 in the morning. That kind of stuff. There is a place for everyone here though.

I was born here so I’m biased. There is so much to do and alot of opportunities depending on what you want.

I would recommend visiting any place your thinking of moving to. If you come around here I would be glad to give some ideas of where to go and neighborhoods to look into . There are some nice hoods to live in and each is VERY different.

If I can give you any advice, DON"T MOVE TO MILWAUKEE! Unless you are looking to settle down and live a quiet life. There is not alot to do and the winters are far worse then Chicago’s. The only thing they got going is Summer-fest.

I would recommend looking at Denver. That’s a great city.

Visit us here in Chicago & go to Denver. Those are your best bets. I’d even recommend Seattle or Portland.

Good Luck.

I want to move to Chicago. It suits my lifestyle a lot more and more the older I get…

Chicago = Best city. Though I’m not to fond on the climate. God I miss home. Can’t wait to move back.

IMO move somewhere that will fit to your job. What do you do? And then possibly you could look at job opportunities in different cities - think of London…small city…dark…

Anyway, I’m living in Europe b/c I go to school here. My family is Hungarian so I do have uncle’s, aunt’s, and cousins here, etc. I have a flat downtown. I highly doubt you want to move to Europe, so there is nothing really to say here. But you should definitely visit if you haven’t.

The best of luck.

^^man…milwaukee isn’t that bad. it’s a chill city…good buds, nice people, usually always somethin to do. weather is a factor, but it’s bearable. there are usually never winter days where it’s too cold to go outside, but i’ve been here all my life so i may have gotten used to it. i’ll agree though, chicago’s definitley got a lot more happenin, and if your gonna choose somewhere in the midwest, chi-town is the place. i’d go into more detail…but i gots to go to work.

Pittsburgh, PA

-City Population: 369,879
-County Population: 1,281,666
-Average High Temperature (July): 82.5

^fuckin’ a.

my second home.

and some great, scenic surrounding towns along the rivers. (chaleroi, uniontown, champion, nemocolin)

go steelers!

New York:
Good:
-So much to do, many jobs, biggest city in the world
-New York Yankees, Mets, Jets, Giants, Knicks, Rangers
-Lots of live music venues
-Don’t need a car, so much public transportation (saves a lot of cash)
Bad:
Expensive to live
Freezing in winter (sometimes, this ones been quite warm)
Really Hot in summer
A lot of people, if you don’t like huge cities don’t come here

GREAT City overall, if your lookin for fun come to new york
(Chicago and San Francisco are amazing too)

I live in Whitehouse, which is a small suburb outside of Toledo, Ohio. Whitehouse is basically a cliche of a small midwestern town: lily white, hardly any downtown shops to speak of, partially hick/farm town-ish, etc.
Toledo is kind of a mini-Detroit. I fucking hate it here. Toledo has a god awful music scene and I’m moving out of here in the fall. Unless you have some kind of contact in the various industries, it’s harder than balls to get a decent professional job here. University of Toledo is not an awful college (it’s got great Engineering and Pharmacy programs) but I have yet to make a single lasting friend here.

God I hate Oklahoma… :frowning:

oh yea, great food in new york too.
