As long as the creepy Jerry impersonator guy they had in Furthur doesn’t play the shows I may be attending, I am all about some Dead next year.
Yeah, I heard Billy K. was quite vocal in his dislike for fake Jerry. I think that ship has sailed.
That guy on PT got if from some bullshit facebook post on Aces back to back … No way I would waste my money on them anyway, since you can see cover bands (DSO or JRAD) play that music better. Last time I saw them at Hampton and it was just slow and sad. I’m just glad I saw the real thing 33 times.
I find it funny that people refer to John Kadlecik that way (cause I do, too). I always always feel like his role is to impersonate. Maybe I don’t fully understand his musicality and his career. But you spend that much time playing and sounding like someone, how can you be yourself?
The rotating guitarist idea is AWESOME. Have guys who were influenced by Jerry play, not a guy who’s trying to play like him. That’s the real legacy of Jerry’s playing: original musicians influenced by him.

I agree with all of this. If someone impersonated me in that way, I would be totally weirded out! I feel like Jerry probably would be too.
The Aces Back To Back guy seems pretty legit. He actually came and sat in my camp at the last Lockn’ for an hour. I made him lunch and he told me about how he is pretty close with J.P. Barlow and knows Hunter as well. I understand this doesn’t make any of this true, but he seems to have information that makes a lot of sense.
I’ve been hearing a bunch of whining from Dead heads about it, but I think it would be a fantastic weekend…

I don’t know you guys. I think that guy gets too much hate. I mean, if I could play and sound like Jerry, you bet your ass I’d be out there making some cash money with them skillz. There are worse musicians to sound like. Like you know how every band in the '90’s had to make sure they had a lead singer that could do that Eddie Vedder thing, where basically just everyone tried to sound like Eddie Vedder…well, that’s worse, right?

I was definitely weirded out when they hired JD for Furthur and never would have dreamed I’d be seeing a Jerry impersonator play with other members of the Dead, but I found I prefer hearing him sing Jerry tunes to Bobby or Phil. I thought he made a good fit and the shows where I saw him were fantastic. He can jam, which is not entirely copycatting.
With that said, I do like the potential of rotating guitarists, a lot.
They should just hire me. I’ve got no solid plans for next summer yet.
