As of today, at least 50 people are being evacuated from their homes near the river due to the rising levels of benzine in the air. Some local residents are being provided with bottled water to avoid poisoning due to groundwater contamination.
The Canadian oil company responsible for the pipeline was warned of corrosion in January and hadn’t taken any action to address the degradation in the pipe.
^^ This one wasn’t actually caused by drilling I don’t believe. Apparently on average Enbridge has about 50-60 oil spills a year, but you really can’t compare a few thousand barrels of oil to what went down in the Gulf. And I guess you kind of have to weigh the environmental degradation that is caused by digging up pipelines and laying down new pipes versus having some of them leak out some oil…which generally leaks back into the ground from whence it came. I know I wouldn’t want the job of making those kinds of decisions.
Well you have to drill to get to the oil last time I checked. No matter how you transport it.
I was just making a comment on love-fest some in this country have with oil exploration.
See Sarah Palin and most of the big business politicians who used that phrase “Drill Baby Drill”
I would love it if we put the same energy and $ into coming up with new forms of energy.
Instead we want to keep destroying our coasts, lakes,…and if some had their way our National Parks and Wildlife refuges. There is no “safe” way to get oil.
So those who say “We can do it easily and safe” I just get upset at. Look at what’s been happening.
It’s like the people who talk about “clean coal”.
There is no such thing. Look at whats happened in places like West Virgina and the Appalachians.
Mountain Top’s are completely removed, miners w/ black lung & killed daily, and water supplies contaminated. It’s way past time to wake up.
And yeah, spilled oil is inevitable. As long as it’s one of our primary source of energy, these things will always happen. There’s always a tanker or two that crashes and leaks oil every few years…this stuff happens. It’s simple human error combined with normal human incompetence.
OK, so I agree with you, shit needs to change. I am tired of the shady practices being used to acquire resources used for energy production. So, just to play devil’s advocate here, which you know I love to do, what are we gonna do exactly? This is the problem I struggle with whenever I get into this discussion or even think about this issue in my head. We know coal is fucked up; the problem is, coal produces the most energy of anything except maybe nuclear. Wind is cool because it’s renewable and requires no waste products, but it doesn’t produce much energy. They’re working on geothermal, but it’s VERY expensive to develop infrastructure from what I understand.
I think we should look into nuclear. I know people are concerned about meltdowns, but according to Wikipedia:
We have a long way to go on nuclear safety, as there have been 57 “nuclear accidents” since Chernobyl. However, as that dude stated, there have been no fatalities. Now, it is unclear what wildlife or biological life might have been harmed as a result of those ambiguous “accidents”, but here’s the thing. I think nuclear is safer than coal. Coal is causing such huge problems here in Southern Appalachia you wouldn’t believe it. Trees at high altitude being stripped of their foliage (by acid rain from coal plants, as well as non-native pests), and perhaps the worst, streams and rivers are being contiminated by the same acid rain. Thanks a whole lot TVA. Hopefully we can find a solution that benefits the public and the wildlife that lives all over this planet.
I remember the National Geographic cover in the late 80’s wth the photo of the guy in a haz-mat suit using a stick to show the nastiness of the toxix sludge in Battle Creek, Michigan. YUCK. The Kalamazoo area has always had waste issues. I also found that the highest suicide rate in Michigan was concentrated in that area as well.
Take That Mother Nature!
It is a little ironic that this spill occurred in the State where the highest vehicle production occurs. But then again, as I said earlier, this is just one of many many spills that happens every year…they are just getting more attention from the media now because of the enormous spill in the Gulf.
Ed its not the meltdown that has people double thinking expanding nuclear energy. To most it is the issue of where to put the waste. Complete meltdowns are rare there are only 2 complete meltdowns and nine partial so i think we need to figure out where to put the waste.

You lefties are always so quick to jump over Sarah Palin any chance you get. Why? Does she really threaten you that much? I’m not really a big fan of hers, but I mean honestly anything to divert attention from the big ol pile of fail at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. right now.
Just love that Drill baby Drill line don’t ya. Oh yeah I’ll say it again Obama signed off on off-shore drilling and then bam the Gulf happened…woops.
