MGMT guy calls TTE "awful"

"Andrew VanWyngarden on seeing Phish at Madison Square Garden in December

I was a big Phish fan growing up and went to lots of shows. We actually got to meet Trey at one of the Madison Square Garden shows last fall. The first few songs I was really taken back, and then the new songs I couldn’t get into as much. That long song “Time Turns Elastic”—that was awful…"

scroll down a bit to see the question…

Definitely a rude thing for him to say…I agree the song is pretty whack though.

Interesting comment from a guy who is in a band that totally sucks.

TTE is awful, though. It’s one of very few Phish songs that I do not like at all.

hmmm, how old is this guy? I think sometimes the older phish fans that have kinda aged with the music might be able to appreciate the newer stuff more

MGMT= awful=TTE

Its kinda funny because the complaints about TTE are exactly what I hear people complain about the new MGMT album: it meanders too much. Like for a guy who has these 10+ minutes of meandering wanna-be psychedelic rock on his new album to say TTE is awful is laughable.

Now he is right. But if he thought TTE was awful, maybe he should’ve used that same judgment when writing his own songs.

TTE isn’t awful. People are gonna fucking love this song in a couple years.

And I was one of the original haters of TTE. I saw the first one live with the orchestra at the Ryman, and complained about how much I hated the way Trey sang it, didn’t think it was that great, blah blah. I still don’t love the vocals, but the music is brilliant in my opinion.

I can rock an appropriately placed TTE.

I like TTE.

Can’t say the same for MGMT.

 this is pretty funny…I think it’s ridiculous when musicians rip on other musicians. It really doesn’t make sense. People will play whatever they want, what it sometimes comes down to (at least sometimes in my mind) is how much talent it takes to play this “long song”. That being said, a TTE wouldn’t bother me too much if it was carefully placed. For that silly MGMTer to call out Trey/Phish like that is kinda bogus…

  Nice job MGMT dude, way to make yourself look like a doucher!

But…oh well. Opinions are like ass holes. Everyone’s got one.

I liked Oracular Spectacular…but from what I’ve heard from their new album, they’ve lost what made them something new… but ya know, i feel like maybe he was sort of set-up to say something bad about the show, but I think this statement is a little over the top considering it sounds like he judged it directly based off that one spot in the show…and I do agree their new stuff cool use a taste of his own medicine

I may be in the minority but I like studio TTE and orchestrated version. Once was enough live though having heard it at Fenway.

I liked the Time To Pretend EP.

Then I didn’t like the versions of those 2 singles on Oracular Spectacular, or really that album as a whole - I could not understand at all why people wanted it covered on 10/31/09.

I am fairly comfortable imo that the stuff I’ve heard off their new album is “awful.”

They just gave me a reason to post that…

IN AND OUT OF FOCUS

Ok I will semi-retract my statement.

TTE isn’t awful. But I got TTE’d 3 times this summer and you could literally feel the energy being sucked out of the audience each time. If TTE were played like half as much this year I think I would feel a little different about it.

I’ll put it this way: I wouldn’t miss TTE if the band decided to shelf it this summer.

Is your belly going in and out of focus?
Been eating too many submarine, submarine sandwiches?

Time Turns Elastic Sweat Pants!

Got tour droopage?
Can’t buy off the rack?
Flabbish derriere?
Muffin top?

The light never dies,
and neither does your appetite.
Time Turns Elastic Sweatpants simply grow with you…

Seen all, seen all, seen all of our summer colors like gold, green and brown?

^HA!!!

I still laugh when I look at the back of that Playbill…

I love the song but it needs a LONG break, it just pisses people off seemingly and kills crowd energy (until the end)…Trey is not stupid, there was a reason it was not played in Miami… :shh:
