Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man
I’ll take a TTE over a Sample in 2010, thank you.
Agreed.
Also, I believe it’s completely unprofessional for a musician to willingly offer up his negative opinion of another musician, especially of one song. That’s just not what you do, unless you are Pat Metheny speaking about Kenny G. recording on top of a Louis Armstrong track. (If you don’t know this story: http://www.jazzoasis.com/methenyonkennyg.htm)
My opinion of MGMT is that they make some ok music, but are pretty childish. Their interviews are TERRIBLE. Talk about “meandering”. It literally sounds like two guys in high school who don’t know anything about music and who want to talk about stupid things like doing acid and going to parties. If I wanted to know more about that I’d interview my friends, not famous musicians.
He was probably just pissed that Phish still has a better, bigger, and brighter crowd than MGMT does, and will ever have.
Wow, just read that Kenny G article.
Even the greats gotta hate; love it. Makes me feel better about my own distastes.
… Hey, I thought it was all good? Apparently there’s bad.
LOVE TTE nuff said

I think that acoustic version of TTE that Trey did is pretty effing awesome.
i like TTE a lot.
I wouldn’t be too surprised to see a re-worked version of this song this summer (trim the fat and then add in a section for a jam maybe). Trey worked so hard on that song, I don’t think he will just give up on it.
Trey probably wouldn’t care if he became aware of this. Like Bill was saying recently in “Type Your Phish Thoughts”: it’s all about finding joy in something with no regards to what other people think. We can’t allow someone’s opinion to compromise our love of something. Trey worked hard on this piece, and it seems to have a special meaning for him. It might be that they decide to shelve it or play it less, but hopefully that will be because they wish to do so.
How ballsy would it be if they opened up summer 2010 with TTE?
At least it’d be out of the way early and I’d be able to enjoy the rest of the Toyota Park show.
I do like what he said about the Grateful Dead vs. other jambands. I hate that everyone explains all jambands, including Phish, as “they’re kind of like the Grateful Dead”.
Actually, they’re not.
I agree with him.
It’s am ambitious piece of music that has a lot of potential, and I like parts of it… but it does meander too much and go nowhere for half of those 15 minutes, especially in a live setting. It’s just like when they used to play “Friday” or whatever - you can just feel the energy get sucked out of the audience almost immediately, then 2/3rds of the crowd gets up to go pee and get a beer. I guess if as a musician you really do hold your audience in contempt and you don’t care if your songs empty the venue for awhile, go for it. ![]()
And I don’t know why having opinions and voicing them when asked is unprofessional. Phish members have probably done the same thing, yeah? This guy’s just a person, like you or me, and he has his own preferences… just like you and me.
Why let someone else’s taste in music offend you?

I think someone earlier mentioned this, but why the hell would he bash Phish in a RELIX interview. Not a great way to get fans, pal! And BTW the first MGMT album was great and original while the new album titled Congratulations is more like Flatulations.
I’d say about 70% of phans really just don’t like the sound and awkward feel of TTE, no matter how hard they try… and the other 30% like to quote eachother’s posts and not write anything in addition, signaling they agree with that person.
…
Is it really “bashing” Phish just to say you don’t like one of their songs??
There’s a lot of Phish songs I don’t like, but I love the band’s music overall. I’ve said far worse about TTE specifically… but I guess I don’t think of it as insulting the whole band.
