MIDWEST REGION - Round 1 (#3 Slave vs. #14 Harpua)

whats that jimmy, you want me to vote for slave? consider it done. then im gonna kill your cat you rambling bastard.

Harpua for me as well.

Musically it doesn’t do anything for you?

How about the awesomely huge “a dog” harmony at the end? The suspended chord on the final “dog”?

How about that awesome 7/4 (or is it 7/8) groove during the beginning? The chorus melody is cool too.

I like Slave fine, but c’mon. There’s just so much to Harpua to love.

Had to vote here… little too close for comfort.

SLAAAAAAAAAAAAVVVEEEEE!!!

wHAT THE? why you hoser!!! :shakes fist:

let go of my fist!

Sorry purists, it’s all about Slave. When you hear a Harpua you damn-well remember it. Slave?..Eh…not so much.

^You bastarde!

I changed my mind, voted for Harpua to tie it up

man, these seedings are bad.
sorry, but this is the second one where I’m really surprised at the #'s.

I’ve got to think about this vote.

I want to be happy though. Why not make me happy at least?

Just moaning, that’s all.

I understand the problems the makers of these brackets faced.
Oh well…

Slave is one of my all time favorites.

That is all

i’ll take slave for 100 alex.

Harpua is sick musically, plus its rarity is appealing. The first section is some of the funkiest shit they did, and the ending is all about Page and some silly vocals. I love it.

Slave is great, but its an overrated Phish song.

and I agree about the lyrics Devin. Great stuff.

At least someone had the balls to say it.

And I love Harpua… But it is NO Slave.

Slave’s a novelty. It’s only good because it’s one of Trey’s first songs. You all would have hated it if it was written post-hiatus.

I didn’t really mean that, but if you think Harpua is just a novelty song, you are overlooking so many parts of the composition.

I won’t say “Harpua” is a novelty. But I will say that just because it pops up every once in awhile, especially in the later years, doesn’t make it better than “Slave.” Trey rambling for 5 minutes doesn’t make it better than “Slave.”

There are some FANTASTIC "Harpua"s out there. But isn’t it more of a live thing? A “had to be there” thing? “Slave” translates well no matter if you’re there or listening to it on CD.

What is it Dad?

So what if I think some of the ramblings are quite comedic?! There are many that swirl through my head constantly:
“They battle”
“Red beams of anrgy light and green beams of (it escapes me now)”
“Blah blah blah…POSTER NUTBAG!”
“Giant comet crashing into Jupiter!”

^^ I’ve never seen a Harpua or a Slave live and I like Harpua better than Slave, so that pretty much blows your theory out of the water.

I mean, Esther doesn’t appear as often as Mexican Cousin post-hiatus, that doesn’t mean that the only reason people would vote for Esther over Mexican Cousin is because it’s played less, it’s just a better song. Same with Harpua, it’s just a better song.

The novelty may have been that later on, if Harpua came out, so did something mind blowing.

I cite 11-2-98, Counselor.
