These two songs are far from favorites for me…
But I’ll take a Theme over a Jim anyday.
This one has “upset potential” written all over it.

Honorable mention for the single longest live Phish song though.
I was camping with a bunch of friends over Memorial day and Jim came on.

I threw Jim a bone, though I know I enjoy Theme more.
Jim is the highlight of too many shows to not call it one of my favorites. See 12/31/95, 11/29/97, 6/16/95 and too many more to mention. Theme is one of my favorites too and if it were up against many of these songs I would have voted for it, but Jim is epic.
^ Word. I can understand Jim being ‘meh’ for some people, but to me there are no outstanding Themes. I like it (12-7 and 12-29 of 1997), but saying that Jim is boring and voting for Theme instead makes no sense. 12-31-95, people!
I really thought the early Jims were incredible, especially when Page was still only playing his electronic piano. It had Antelope style potential.
I lost interest in Jim in later years so it’s kind of backseated in my mind, especially over Theme which I consider one of their best songs after '95.
Went with Theme for the simple fact that Jim seemed really overplayed.

For anything of Billy Breathes to even THINK it has anything on Jim is simply a travesty.

WHA??? What’s happening to Jim!! Ackkkk!! Jim is an instant classic in any show. I can’t remember the last time I heard a Theme and was blown away.

Personally I get more of a willy when I hear the opening chords to Jim rather than the slo lope of theme… not that I don’t like theme, its great. prolly best on that album but, BUT!
Think of it this way… Take out all the themes ever played and phish is still phish… take away all the Jims and you have a phish outta water.*

I love Jim. But Theme is prolly one of my top five “Post Rift” songs. Wouldve loved to see the boys take a Theme out for an extended open ended spin. Thats the only thing Jim may have on it . And even then, its not enough imo.
hard choice on this one. i think jim got a bad matchup. theme.
