MIDWEST REGION - Round 2 (#2 Bowie v #10 Mound)

I’ll say Mound here. Bowie’s great, but so’s Mound. Someone needs to vote for it.

Bowie is spending a night with a girl going from cuddling to foreplay to oral sex to full on banging back to oral sex and then cuddling and then sleep.

Mound is like meeting your girl at her job and fucking her in some back room.

^ You’re right, but this kind of talk is not good for an old man with a weak heart.

Are you saying this is a bad thing?

Mound all the way here. Bowie was hit or miss with me. Mostly miss in the later years!

People voted for mound? that’s kind of fucked.

I think i saw enough Bowie’s to know i like Mound better. I guess i always enjoyed the first Bowie of a tour but the next was usually 2 nights later and so on and so on. Bowie was supposed to be a big heavy hitter but it never MADE a show for me. In fact it killed sets for me.

this sucks… i really don’t know what to do here.

i’m kinda with biggie… everytime i saw a Bowie i was waiting for some of the insanity that marked so many Bowie’s before like 95-96, but never really got it. in fact, despite the really cool long intro to Bowie on 8/10/97, its always made me kinda sad that such an amazing set just kinda got eaten up by a long and fairly regular Bowie.

Mound is an easy vote because its rare, has crazy rhythms, is written by Mike… this is by far the hardest vote so far for me.

no answer yet… i need time.

Mound.

Bowie.

Wasn’t easy though.

It was the lyrics that sealed the deal.

Seriously.

I love mound, I truly do but I can’t vote for it over Bowie. I just can’t. In fact I enjoy the composed section of Bowie probably more than any other composition even if the jam can be quite regular sometimes.

I agree with the sentiment here, Bowie had some really good jams, but they were very rare, and to me a normal Bowie usually was lackluster. Especially since I was pretty much brought up on the 12-29-94.

^ But mound doesn’t have any good jams…Even if Bowie was hit or miss, there was never really a hit mound if you catch my drift. I never have thought of any bowie I’ve ever heard as lackluster, but I’m sure someone’s about to direct towards one. Bowie is even a highlight of Coventry IMO.

First, the begining of mound is one of the sickest starts to any song ever, Fishman is THE man.

Second, how they came up with the start and played it rediculously well is one of the main reasons I love Phish.

Third, The old man knows very well
Going down by the snowbank, there’s a mound
A mound that an old man knows good
Look who raises his shoe all over this mound
Right over the world that’s another rewind

And it’s time, time, time for the last rewind
For a broken old man and a world unkind
He buried all his memories of home
In an icy clump that lies beneath the ground

No one knows how far he traveled
Oh! I heard he walked miles from the little mound
Can he find some shelter?
He doesn’t know to behold what the cold frost can do
And at last till he realized he’d circled back around
Round a back circle, round a back realized

And it’s time, time, time for the last rewind
For a broken old man and a world unkind
He buried all his memories of home
In an icy clump that lies beneath the ground

Ice is all he was made of
The bitter blue, and frozen through
He went over to the mound
Reclining down his final thoughts
Were drifting to the time this life had shined

Fourth, “He doesn’t know to behold what the cold frost can do
And at last till he realized he’d circled back around
Round a back circle, round a back realized”

This is one of my favorite Lyrics in any Phish song ever.

Fifth, Listen to the Rift version right now. Check out Mike’s bass, fish’s Drum’s, Page’s Keys and Trey’s Guitar. All of the member’s playing well are crucial to this song coming off great. No one member can do it, it takes all FOUR!!!

Mound is the shit!

Having said that I love me a Bowie any day of the year, just not as much as mound.

we are voting for the better songs here right? not just the versions we’ve seen or songs that played every time we saw phish. if you are judging apples to apples and take the best version of each song then bowie wins big.

alright fuck it. its probably too late to make a difference anyway, but Mound is the choice.

As long as you don’t listen to the guitar part, it was pretty good.

^no shit. That Bowie’s composed part really showcased Trey’s condition.

Sorry for the double post - just wanted to quote this one from Vultured, because it’s such a great breakdown of why Mound is so great.

Even though I went w/Bowie.

[and yeah, I freakin adore the lyrics for David Bowie, alright? Can’t a guy be weird? :)]

lol, indeed it did.

I knew at that point things were definitely wrong. Actually I knew it at the Halley’s, which I think came before that.
