Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August 2007.
It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on 27 Aug, when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on 27 Aug at 12.30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.
Hope we can all experience this rarity.

Whoah, how fuckin’ weird. This thread just reminded me of a dream that I had last night. I had a dream that I looked up in the sky and saw 2 moons. And then I saw 3, and was really weirded out about it. I’ve never heard of Mars appearing the size of the moon before, until I read this thread just now. That’s crazy coincidental. I’m gonna be in a funk all day because of this.

Mars will no way be as big as the moon. Absolutely no way. At best it will be the second brightest thing in the night sky, have a vaguely reddish colour (hard to tell because it won’t appear as much more than a pin prick) and you’d only notice it if somebody pointed it out to you. Worth getting the binoculars out for though. M
Even at 34 Million miles it is still too far away (The moon is only a quarter of a million miles away). Mars has a diametr only twice that of the moon, so do the maths. Twice as wide, 140 times as far away.
