*OFFICIAL* 03.06.09 Hampton Reviews/Thoughts

im sitting here listening to this rift… and i swear this is straight from 94.

Very well said, Greg. I’m in total agreement with you.

Can’t wait to hear tonight’s show!

One thought keeps coming to my head…Holy shit…fuckin sick…the boys are back and they mean BUSINESS…maybe thats more than one thought…but thats what I’m thinkin

I really like Backwards Down the Number Line… its refreshing

Great post Greg…You had me until you threw in the Obama line :;

Good to hear from you, Greg. I totally agree.

I liked that they started yem over, and mikes bass solo was amazing. theme from the bottom was insane. tweezer and bowie were insane. page ripped that stage about. they needed this, we needed this. looking back on it now, fluffhead was the only thing this could have started out with to really begin something special again. they are feeling it and they are in business. trey has his flubs once in a while but when he goes he goes. his tone is back, he was working that feedback last night, and when he mutes open strings it sounds like someone ripping velcro.

this is something special again

Truly an amazing night of music. They did everything they needed to do in order to fully regain some of the trust they had lost with the fans since Post Hiatus. Obviously, opening with Fluffhead was more of a statement than anything and–all things (re)considered–they did a hell of a job with it. As for the show as whole, not much else to say (thanks Greg). All I know is that my love for this band has been revived after a serious break. Even after the announcement in October, the reality of Phish seemed in itself unrealistic. Now it could not be any more real or exciting. They are back and they are REALLY back. Long live the Pa

I think Phish shows the influence of Sun Ra in the way they explore the relationship of freedom and discipline. I think these shows show they have the intention of exploring their disciplined side right now. While these shows are very exiting to hear, I think the most exiting aspect is that they seem like a strong foundation for growth, and as they reconnect with their discipline as musicians, it will lead to opportunities to explore freedom. There will be some hot shows in the coming years!

Well I’ve been so busy this week I’m finally listening to the first night right now. Fluffhead sounds great!!! Band sounds so great!!! I love it Trey says check it out…then mike says check this one out!!! lol

Stash is definitely spacey…Me likey

I loved the strangeness in the fountain before the show. I need to find out what went on pre-show on 3/7 and 3/8…

So did they bust out the tramps with YEM? Or is that a thing of the past?

nevermind, listening to it, it sure sounds like they’re back

didn’t make it to hampton but i listened to it “No Spoilers” style with my brother last night. I got goosebumps as soon as he hit play and i still have some.

i don’t know if anything has translated so well on an audience recording as that show (3/6) did to me last night. For a lot of the show i honestly couldn’t tell the difference between this and audience recordings from the mid-90s. They sounded incredible. I knew it would be cool to hear and bring back some good emotions and memories but i was not expecting to hear that. Some of the songs seemed a little out of place and it made it go on for a really long time until i wasn’t sure if the set was ever going to end…

…but that’s a good thing.

all the key songs sounded great and i am fucking psyched for this summer. Ever since Coventry hearing Phish for me has shot me right back into the past, into those visions and sounds locked away in my memory banks as these mythological moments so surreal it was like they never existed and i would get very sentimental and nostalgic and hypnotized. And all those songs still mean just as much to me but now, after hearing that first show back last night i can finally get that feeling of optimism and pure joy and elation that comes with Phish while looking forward. And that’s a wonderful thing.

next stop Knoxville!

^^
yes, got the tramps.

also, during one of the encores, they let go of a few MASSIVE balloon that were hanging from the ceiling. This things were huge. One was headed straight for Page and I think Trey popped it just in time. I just wrote down “page balloon” in my notes. It was great!

Here are some pics from the show via my cell phone camera:

bigb’s review:

SICK!

all i can say is i was absolutely floored. the songs, the playing, the lights(!!!), the crowd, the energy…not to be a complete dork, but ‘i feel the feeling i forgot’. this show (well, the whole weekend) was pure, unadulterated joy, the likes of which i haven’t been amidst since Cypress. if you were there, you know what i’m saying. if you weren’t, i sincerely wish you had been. at any rate, yes they are finally, finally BACK. and if the jam out of saturday’s DWD is a portent of things to come, we’re in for it this summer…

^ I got to bounce one of those baby’s. They were indeed massive, too bad they popped so easily so there was never a moment where every ball was ‘bouncing around the room’ at one time…

the trampolines were nice. you cant tell from the sbd all that much, but i thought one of the greatest moments of the show was the look on treys face when the crowd began to sing fluffhead. idk how you cant hear it on the sbd. i wasnt on the floor i was in the row next to the taped off VIP row in the 3rd row up next to the aisle closest to the stage and i couldnt hear trey singing. all i hear was the crowd. he looked taken aback when everyone shouted out those lyrics. i lost my voice basically after cdt
