Official '07-'08 NBA Thread

I’m still shocked that Boston won Game 3 at the Palace. Kevin Garnett looked like he was defeated and his season was over after that Game 2 loss in the post game press conference.

Interesting article on Kevin Garnett by Bill Simmons in the latest ESPN the Magazine if you like his blogs. Dudes a huge Boston homer, but it was a pretty good article explaining why Garnett is not clutch. Kevin Gar-not if you listen to that idiot Skip Bayless.

I also forgot how much I hate Detroit’s courtside announcer. Mason (there is no way I should know this guys name). Deeeeeeeeetroit Basketballlllll!. Wow that’s super annoying.

Your right though Stevo…Weird Series. I definitely see it going 7 and flip a coin on the winner.

It looks like the Lake Show have wrapped it up, but they need to finish off the Spurs in 5. Don’t let the Spurs believe they can win it that building. You have to put this team away. If LA doesn’t win Game 5 it’s going 7.

The only thing that annoys me more than “Deeeeetroit Baaaaaasketbaaaaaaalll” is the white-out phenomenon. Were the Spurs the first team to do that? Or the Heat? I think it was one of those teams.

^ It was the Heat back when they thought they would take out the Knicks in 99! LOL

I think part of the reason Mason is so annoying to some folks is because half of the announcers in the business now try their best to rip him off. So now you don’t hear Mason just at Piston games, you hear him everywhere. The Cavs are the worst…I swear they’ve ripped off every part of the Pistons arena show that there is. And he only does the “Deeeetroit Basketball” a few times a game…I think he tries not to overkill it.

And I think we’ve known Garnett isn’t clutch since his days with the T’Wolves. He always disappeared at the end of games and always handed the ball to Cassell or Spreewell. He’s more of a defensive player anyway…he doesn’t play in the low block enough to get a clutch layup and if you need Garnett to hit your game-winning shot, then you’ve got issues. It’s always been this way but it’s like no one noticed until he got to Boston (obviously a lot of media didn’t bother watching T’Wolves playoff games).

And I HATE the white-out and I hated that the Pistons tried it in game 3…that’s a gimmick for Heat fans…not for the Palace. And you’ll notice you didn’t see a sign of it for Game 4 after that Game 3 performance. Now all we have to do is get rid of those horrible thundersticks and let people make noise on their own. Thanks for nothing, Anaheim Angels…those things are on YOUR heads.

And yeah…Brent Barry was fouled and that SHOULD have been called. It wasn’t a ticky-tack foul…Fisher just nailed him. You don’t ignore a foul that is that blatant. The worst was the TNT analysts saying that Barry needed to “sell” the foul. That’s just wonderful…we’re trying have LESS flopping now we have an entire group of analysts (including the King Flopper Reggie Miller) teaching kids to fling themselves to the ground to get fouls. Barry did the right thing and still tried to hit the shot despite the foul and, of course, he don’t get a call. Wonderful. Of course, if that was Kobe instead of Barry in the same position, they would have blown the whistle before there was ever any contact. Either way, the Lakers dominated the game so it’s not like they didn’t deserve it. Duncan looks tired…he was throwing up the worst half-assed layups I’ve ever seen…he didn’t even try to get better shots…that was poor.

And I’d talk about Game 5 but look here

Clearly the Celtics have already won the series. Oh well. What a bummer. I guess I’ll just play some Guitar Hero tonight instead…

What in Sam Hill is a “white-out”?

When all the crowd wears white.

Or the color of the home team…I think I’ve seen in Utah a ghey-ish powder blue.

Ug…not so good. Sheed’s defense was terrible. Rip needs to stop handling the ball at ALL times. Rodney Stuckey is awesome. Celtics can’t close it out and nearly blow it. Pistons win Game 6 and lose Game 7. Dear Lord…can’t they just disqualify both these teams and hand it to whoever wins the West?

Stevo

I’d venture to say that a BOS/LAL would be the highest-rated NBA Finals in quite a long time. I’m tempted to even say since '98, but that I doubt that.

Feel like deja vu? As well it should.

From Rumors and Rants:

  • The Lakers wearing short shorts. Well, at least for half of a game.

  • The Nuggets scoring like 140 points a game, but losing early in the playoffs. All that was missing was Alex English and rainbow unis.

  • The Yankees in last place.

  • New Kids on The Block embarking on a tour.

  • Indiana Jones is back in theaters.

Not to mention a possible Lakers v Celtics finals.

^Yeah, I know some folks who are CONVINCED that the refs will eventually screw over the Stones to make sure that Boston gets in. I haven’t really seen any favortism so far in this series (except the start of Game 4 which the Pistons won anyway) but I can’t argue with the conspiracy folks, really…

As for the Lakers/Spurs

No comment on Vujacic’s dick-ish heave at the buzzer to make it an 8-point victory when the line was LAL -7.5?

BWAHA!

Actually, I think I went to bed with 30 seconds left since I realized it was pointless to keep watching. Maybe he was shooting for free tacos for the fans?

But yeah…I love when meaningless last-minute shots totally change the line on the game…just hilarious. Vujacic just earned himself a new car.

Ouch…the Pistons were DUN once they blew that 10-point lead. That was pathetic. Time to BLOW IT UP!! Gotta fire Flip too though I don’t think it’s his fault…these players probably wouldn’t listen to any coach aside from maybe Phil Jackson. Chauncey/Rip for T-Mac baby!! Clear Sheed’s Expiring Contract for a pick and then pick up Brand. Woot!

Stevo

Wow, I love just responding to myself over and over…

Anyway, news is out this morning, Flip is FIRED!! Hurray.

The only problem is the story is that the new coach will be Michael Curry…ug…boooo. This is a guy who was ON FLIP’S STAFF! If the team was ignoring Flip, then why would a guy off his staff work. Plus, maybe it’s me but Curry wasn’t exactly the most “cerebral” player out there. I don’t mind us using a first-time coach but Curry just doesn’t seem quite right. Either way, I’d rather we try out something new with Curry then roll out Flip once again…we know that we’re getting the same crap with Flip but not with someone new.

Of course, this Curry part is all rumor but at least Flip is gone…I hated that hire right from the start. I just hope Dumars ain’t done…he needs to blow up the team a bit too…

They should have re-hired Rick Carlisle.

I wouldn’t mind that or them rehiring Larry Brown if they were available but the owner, Bill Davidson, appears to hate them both and would never allow either to be back. I’m a definite member of the Rick Nation. All hail Carlisle.

Any Finals picks out there? I have Lakers in 5. I think the coaching disparity between Doc Rivers and Phil Jackson is monstrously huge. The Celts defense has been a little suspect at times (the Pistons scored 90-100 on them multiple times) and the lack of clutch play could hurt them. Not to mention that Kobe is playing out of his mind and has a legit center to back him up. The Lakers bench seems far better than the Celts also. Seems like an easy pick to me.

Of course I’m a Boston-hater so perhaps that may be weighing into it but I picked Boston over the Pistons in 7 so I usually don’t let this stuff cloud my judgement…usually…

Stevo

I think this series will come down to coaching. Phil may just outcoach Doc 4 games in a row though. I hate to say it but this Lakers team is built just like the 90’s Bulls. The defense is insane and they go on offensive runs that just immasculate the other team. Phil is a master of the mental aspect of the game. Give them a false sense of hope then crush their dreams with your superstar! That was the way of the Bulls and now the way of this Lakers team.

I don’t think this Lakers team has as good of a defense as the 90s Bulls, but that aside I do think they’re comparable.

Also, I read Jack Nicholson dropped 35 large per ticket for 2 courtside seats for tonight’s game 1 in Beantown.

Yes. But only because the Bulls D was Supro hydro tech insane. I think they held the Jazz to 54 points one game in 98!
