Official 6.10.09 Knoxville Thread

Definitely my favoritest setlist of the tour so far.

Sick x10 show. I’m so glad I made the decision to hit this show up before roo. Now I am waiting in traffic on i24 and I don’t care. Can’t wait for friday!

How are you typing that? Laptop? Cell phone?

Will was right, I ain’t no good at these internetz.

Blackberry’d

Righteous’d!

Last night rocked hard. The boys are on fire and look so pumped. at the end of the first set trey gave a big fist pump as he walked off the stage as if to say “we will now give you a break so that you can attempt to find your face.”

Gotta love the Trey fist pump!

ok, good show last night. now that my head has time to clear here are a few thoughts on it.

the first three songs really got me pumped. two of my favorite old school songs and what i consider the best new song so far.

nice first set foam followed by a nice train song. so so good to hear train song. fits in perfect right after a longer jam.

i don’t know if anyone mentioned it yet but mike ripped the top off the place at the end of undermind. dropping some serious dirty effects fused bombs. i’m not really familiar with most of that album but undermind is fine by be.

mikes groove. solid high energy version. good stuff from all the guys.

me and my buddy went out into the concession area during the coil and zero. coil surprised me, i was thinking that after mikes groove they would just throw out a set ender. anyways at least we missed most of the setbreak traffic.

someone mentioned the waves>asihtos transition. this was really good. the lights were really as much of it as the music. so cool.

great bowie, i’m not a big fan of army of one, reba was right on. no flubs that i heard. actually trey was pretty much on his shit all night. all the composed sections were right on.

i was sure they were gonna do carolina in asheville and was wrong so when they went up for the next song i figured that would be it. i mean, we did wake up in carolina in the morning, but we got hello my baby instead. i guess doing the unexpected is to be expected.

julius was good to hear. cavern was great. i really love cavern, take care of your shoes.

hood was nice. i don’t know if it’s just me but every new version i’ve heard of this, trey sounds like he’s playing out of key on the first part of the “thank you mr miner” jam. maybe that’s just how he does it now, or maybe i need to go back and relisten to some older versions to compare. i could be wrong on this one.
also, as much as i like hood, i was hoping that a set closing hood would have peaked a little harder before the good about hood ending. still a good solid version though.

nice keytar action on the encore. no rocky top. oh, well.

rolled back to the holiday inn to find cops and a K9 unit. some cops came out of the elevator with a huge bag of buds and some guy. all night they were busting people, walking down the hall smelling for smoke. about three in the morning i heard knocking on the door from the room next door. there was a door in between our room and our neighbors so could hear the whole thing go down. they didn’t answer for about five minutes then finally let them in. cops came in and fucked with them saying they smelled weed. i think they finally left without arresting anyone cuz they couldn’t find anything but they made anyone who wasn’t a registered guest leave the room.

so, good show, bad scene at the hotel.

Yet another reason I avoid staying in hotels if I can avoid it.

Don’t hassle me, man.

Thanks for the review! I’m surprised you left during “Coil,” though. You won’t find me pissing or getting something to drink during that (but "Zero, yes).

Panicstream is up…

^^ yeah, we started making our way up the stairs at the end of weekapaug, didn’t hear the opening notes of coil till i got in the hall. i wasn’t expecting another big song.

you are completely right, i can’t imagine anyone HASN’T noticed trey botching the mr. minor part… he hasn’t played that part clean since 2000, i swear. last night was close, from what i could tell off the phistube stream he missed the beginning of the first section and then hit about 75-80% of the other two in the right key.

i also agree with you about the peak of the hoods. i couldn’t tell if last night’s was better, i’ll give it a listen today… but jones beach and camden both had less than intense endings. trey needs to shred the peak before the “feel good” vocals come in!!!

a part of me thinks they’ve played hood three times already partly because they (trey) want to get that mr. minor part right in a live setting.

i absolutely love how they’ve been writing the setlists, definitely keeps me on my toes knowing that anything is fair game at any time

especially whenever i think a tune they’re playing HAS TO BE the set closer, usually going off past shows and “closing tunes” used… more often than not they’ve surprised me with adding even more to the set. (i.e. mikes set closer last night?? nope, let’s add coil and zero… or shows like marathon shows like hampton…so many times i thought the sets were gonna end and didn’t)

I was at that show last night. My god what a show. Hank’s set assesment was correct. After about the fourth song I knew it was on…didn’t leave my row all night. The whole show was great, I thought Train song got off to a rocky start and as far as undermind goes, it was awesome. In fact I did t recognize it until the singing started. Now off to bonnaroo!

I guess they’re saving “Rocky Top” for Boneroo.

for the record, Army of One rules. great page tune!

^YES!

Well, I’ve made it as far as Train Song, and this show is super-solid so far. This is a fuller arrangement of Train Song than I’ve ever heard them play. It’s nice.

Wow. Can’t wait to hear this show!

‘Round Room’ (for me) is stacked with strong compositions that never fully go developed. (yet!) That record featured a return to the old, progressive compositional style but with more mature lyrical content. ‘Waves’, ‘Pebbles and Marbles’, ‘Walls of the Caves’ are amazing compositions. ‘Anything but me’ is such a beautiful little pop waltz. ‘Round Room’ has this melancholy that is so striking to me. I wish Gordon would write some more like that. Everybody loves ‘46 Days’. ‘7 Below’ is a great jam vehicle. ‘All of these Dreams’ is their ‘Attics of my life’.

What’s not to like?

I think the Steve Lillywhite Time Turns Elastic seems to be picking up where Trey left
off on some of the extended compositions on Round Room. I hope there’s more like it…

good stuff, bowie was pretty spot on… just listening to army of one now… got to love the page tunes

I am a HUGE fan of all Phish studio efforts. They all capture a moment in time where phish was at that time. RR & Undermind are fucking ear candy imo! I’m old school and a believer that no one can touch songs like Split Open, Fluff, D Sky, Gin etc. I also feel the same about Waves, Peb and Marb, All of these Dreams, Scents & Subtle Sounds, Army of One, etc. They can craft the best songs. I’m for a set 1 RR and set 2 UM Encore TTE! That would be E P I C! With that said, the new one is gonna rock my WORLD! does this even belong in this thread…???

HAHAHA this post made my day!
