Official Games of the XXIX Olympiad Thread

Not a lot of talk of the upcoming summer games on here.

Probably not much interest, either. I used to be real into them when I was younger, mainly 88-96, but I seem to lose interest with each passing Olympics.

The athletes have been given the OK to blog from Olympic Village, which is a big deal in China apparently.

I also saw today where the US plans to bring their own food…

Some of my favorite Olympic memories include Dan vs. Dave, Dream Teams, and watching Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, and Janet Evans in their prime.

Dan vs. Dave was a PRE-Olympic event, as it turned out!

No love for Brian Boitano?

i to used to love watching the olympics mainly summer since i was a swimmerfrom grade school to high school.but as i got older (35 this year) i became less and less enthused and now dont really watch the olympics.opening ceremonies and maybe the snow boarding for the winter and swimming for summer.

All I watch is the basketball.

Good ol’ basketball.

I think Team USA is a little more prepared this time

Why isn’t golf or football an Olympic sport?

Golf’s a game, not a sport. And football is basically big in the U.S. and Canada, and no one else even knows how to play the game.

Oh and Ben Johnson 1988 Olympics Ftw.

^
Good call I forgot about that.

What do you consider the difference is between a “sport” and a “game?”

Sports generally have some kind of intense physical activity involved. I don’t consider walking or swinging a club to be all that intense. BTW, I don’t think Curling should be an olympic sport either. I have board games that involve much more physical activity than golf. I’m not saying that I don’t like golf, quite the contrary, but it is something that you can be really out of shape and drunk out of your mind and still do reasonably well…that just doesn’t seem like a sport to me.

To be a great golfer, you don’t necessarily exert a lot of energy, I agree with that. In essence you are just swinging a metal stick at a little white ball.

However, you still need a great deal of physical ability, coordination and mental toughness.

^ You need a good deal of all of that for sherades or Twister as well. You win Neil, it’s a sport, and so is billiards, figure skating and darts. I refuse to admit, however, that race car driving is any kind of sport at all.

when youre ages 6-12 the oly, pics is the coolest thing ever

I just saw where the opening ceremonies are set to commence at eight seconds after the eighth minute after the eighth hour in the evening in Beijing on August 8th, 2008.

That’s, like, cosmic and shit.

sooooooooooooooo headyyyyyyyyyyy

Only about 4 months away.

Have you guys been seeing all the protesting going on? The Olympic flame was actually snuffed twice in Europe. I didn’t even think that was possible.

And it’s supposed to be in SF on Wednesday…some people scaled the GG Bridge and unfurled a banner reading “Free Tibet” today.

Expect protests on a fairly large scale in SF on Wed, I’m guessing.

You gotta watch out for those bald bastards!

This gonna be one of the best Olympics.

Something is gonna go down in China for sure.

There has been so much controversy and antics from protesters, not to mention the crackdown on the media and news in general from the Chinese Government,…something’s got to give.
As well as all the calls for world leaders to skip the opening ceremonies.

The fact that they are gonna let the athletes blog from the village is pretty interesting as well. I guess we’ll wait and see.

I’ve always been much more a winter sports enthusiast as opposed to the summer games.

Tho I like canoing and kayaking… they have an event for that no? I don’t know. I’ll probably pay little attention unless my interest some how turns. Naked female ‘anything’ would do that. :stuck_out_tongue:

As far as the protests… that would be great if there was some kind of positive political result for the Tibetan people. That would be the most significant event to come out of the games.

I’m pumped to watch Team USA. I think they’re really got a good thing going and Coach K has them working like a well-oiled machine. Of course, I can only tell from the pre-Olympic play-in trials and such but they destroyed every team there which was nice.

And seriously, isn’t this Olympic torch thing kind of silly. Isn’t the whole purpose to carry the torch from where it is lit in Greece to where the games are taking place (China)? Why are they running through France and San Francisco? And if I’m supposed the believe that the flame never goes out, you’re telling me it didn’t go out on the plane to San Fran? I know they want to get it through every country, but it’s getting stupid…just run it from Greece to China and be done with it.

Stevo

They are taking the scenic route, Stevo.

Geez.
