Send My Love To Linda: An Untold Jimi Hendrix Story

[i]Jan. 16, 1970.

The greatest rock guitarist to ever play the instrument, Jimi Hendrix, has eight months and two days to live. He spends part of the day at New York City’s Record Plant laying down some tracks. After a few busted takes, Jimi launches into one of the most amazing instrumentals that few people have ever heard.

Hendrix called the piece “Sending My Love to Linda,” and the first time I heard this rarity, I was blown away. It felt to me like this artist who had always owned an amazing ability to express himself through his music was truly working through something. Despite being a Hendrix fan, I had to go back and find out more about who this Linda was.

What I found out goes something like this: One night in May of 1966, a beautiful girl walked into a bar. Really. The bar was the Cheetah Club in New York City. The beautiful girl was Linda Keith.

It’s the beginning of one of the most amazingly under-told stories in rock history. A story that Linda, who rarely speaks about her Hendrix connection, agreed to recount to me over the phone.

Back then, she was just 20 years old, a model and the girlfriend of Rolling Stone Keith Richards. She went to the Cheetah with friends and caught a band that she recalls as fairly mediocre — except for a backup guitarist who played his right-handed guitar left-handed, upside down and strung backward. Linda invited the guitarist, who at the time was performing under the name Jimmy James, for a drink. They struck up an instant friendship over their mutual love of the blues.

From there I don’t think it’s an overstatement to say that Linda made it something of a mission to introduce the world to the man whose real name was Jimi Hendrix. Despite his own concerns about his voice, she encouraged him to sing. And maybe most significantly, she played Hendrix a promotional copy of a record just cut by singer Tim Rose.

Though rebuffed by the first few music managers and label reps she brought round to see him, Linda eventually convinced Chas Chandler, bassist with the Animals, to listen to Hendrix. Chas agreed, and the guitarist played his own cover of the Tim Rose song “Hey Joe” — one Hendrix later made very much his own.

When I asked Linda why she didn’t care to talk more about her time with Hendrix, she told me that it was because the press generally “turned [these interviews] into something that wasn’t quite accurate." They were more interested in the cliches of sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll than the man himself. The Hendrix she remembers was a prodigious worker who was rarely without his guitar. The music meant more to Jimi than the artifice for which many remember him. “Just listen, and you’ll hear,” Linda told me he would say.

No truer words. Just listen and you’ll hear Jimi’s enduring gratitude for Linda.[/i]

Wyoming Man Douses Himself in Paint to Avoid Taser

AP

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – A Cheyenne man who doused himself with white latex paint in hopes of avoiding a police Taser was hit with the stun gun anyway.

The Taser chase happened Sept. 16, when Cheyenne police went to Brian Mattert’s house on a domestic violence call. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports that when police arrived, Mattert thought they’d use a Taser on him, so he hastily covered himself in paint and told officers that if they shot him with the stun gun, he’d die.

Officers told him the paint wouldn’t affect the Taser’s capability. According to police, Mattert scuffled with officers and was hit with a Taser twice before officers handcuffed him.

He faces several criminal charges. Police say the officers’ uniforms had to be cleaned.

Did Tyler Clementi Reach Out for Help Before Suicide?

AOL News (Sept. 30) – The Rutgers University student who committed suicide after two students allegedly streamed a video of his gay sexual encounter over the Internet may have reached out for help before killing himself.

A message board thread on justusboys.com contains several messages by a user identified as “cit2mo,” who is believed to be 18-year-old Tyler Clementi, the Manhattan news website Gawker reported.

On Wednesday, Middlesex County, N.J., prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan announced the arrests of Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei, both 18. The Rutgers freshmen have been charged with two counts each of invasion of privacy for allegedly using a camera to view and transmit a live image of Clementi on Sept. 19.

Ravi has also been charged with two additional counts of invasion of privacy for allegedly attempting to use the camera to view and transmit another encounter involving Clementi on Sept. 21, the same day that cit2mo started a now defunct thread titled “college roommate spying” on justusboys.com.

This undated photo from Facebook shows Tyler Clementi, who allegedly committed suicide after two Rutgers University students taped him having sex.“So the other night I had a guy over. I had talked to my roommate that afternoon and he had said it would be fine w/him,” cit2mo wrote. “I checked his twitter today. He tweeted that I was using the room … and that he went into somebody else’s room and remotely turned on his webcam and saw me making out with a guy.”

Cit2mo added: “So my question is what next? I could just be more careful next time. … [But] I’m [kind of] p----- at him. … It would be nice to get him in trouble but [I don’t know if] I have enough to get him in trouble.”

The situation described by cit2mo, as well as the dates of the posts, appear to match the issues that Clementi was dealing with, indicating that he was most likely the person responsible for the posts, Gawker reported.

On Wednesday, The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., cited a now defunct Twitter profile that Ravi allegedly used in which a poster made a tweet on Sept. 19, saying that his roommate had asked to use their room until midnight.

“I went into Molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay,” the message read.

A similar tweet, on Sept. 22, mentioned the instant message/live feed service iChat.

“Roommate asked for room again. Its happening again. People with iChat don’t you dare video chat me from 930 to 12,” the message read.

The Twitter message was posted on the same day that cit2mo posted the following message to justusboys.com:

“So I wanted to have the guy over again. I texted roomie around 7 asking for the room later tonight and he said it was fine. When I got back to the room I instantly noticed he had turned the webcam toward my bed. And he had posted online again saying ‘anyone want a free show just video chat me tonight’ or something similar to that.”

Cit2mo goes on to say that he contacted his resident assistant. “We’ll see what happens,” the poster wrote. Cit2mo also said that talking to his roommate “didn’t seem like an option” and that the second occurrence “set me off.”

The last post by cit2mo was made on Sept. 22. In it, he said that he had provided a written statement about the incidents to officials at the college and that they “seemed to take it seriously.”

Not long after that post by cit2mo, Clementi posted his last message to his Facebook profile, according to WPIX-TV and The Star-Ledger.

“Jumping off the gw bridge sorry,” Clementi wrote.

Clementi is believed to have jumped off the George Washington Bridge shortly after the message was posted. A body recovered from the Hudson River on Wednesday was positively identified today as his, according to several local media reports.

Through a statement issued by a lawyer, Clementi’s family confirmed that he had committed suicide.

“The family is heartbroken beyond words. They respectfully request that they be given time to grieve their great loss and that their privacy at this painful time be respected by all,” the Clementi family said.

“His privacy was violated, very, very violated,” Rutgers student Daryl Chan told The Herald News, a New Jersey newspaper. “His roommate was a very tech-savvy-type dude. He set up cameras all over the room and didn’t tell him. A lot of the RAs are troubled by it.”

Other friends described Clementi to the newspaper as a gifted musician who had won several scholarships and awards for his musical abilities.

“He was so incredibly talented. I could not believe how good he was for such a young boy,” Diane Wade, a violinist with the Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra, told The Herald News. “Such a nice kid all the way around. … As a parent, he was the way you want your kids to be – polite, courteous, serious about the work he was doing and a hard worker.”

In an e-mail to AOL News, Clementi’s friend Blake McCrossin says he can sympathize with his friend’s situation.

“I remember telling him how I felt when I was 18, freshman in college, and I too was fearful of how my friends would change if they knew I was gay,” McCrossin said. “Little did I know one who was most judgmental about my sexuality was myself. So, when people say, ‘Why would he kill himself over this?’ I can sympathize with the fear that Tyler felt. … We truly need to realize that diversity is a part of this world.”

A friend of Ravi’s told the New York Daily News that he was an outgoing ping-pong player and Frisbee enthusiast who enjoyed pranks.

“I think he’s a good person,” Michael Zhuang, 17, a neighbor and former classmate, told the newspaper. “I don’t think he’s a homophobe. It would’ve been no different if it was a girl in the room.”

Ravi’s friends have made similar statements to The Star-Ledger and have claimed that Ravi told them he had accidentally turned on the webcam in his room while he was in Wei’s dorm room and that he shut it off when he saw Clementi in a sexual encounter.

Ravi’s attorney has not responded to requests for comment on the case.

In a statement sent to AOL News, Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick said that the college would not comment on the specifics of the case but said that if the allegations are true, they “gravely violate the university’s standards of decency and humanity.”

Ravi is free on $25,000 bail, and Wei is free on her own recognizance, pending their next court appearance. If convicted, each of the students faces a prison term of up to five years.

Now THIS is good news. Seems all you have to do to get some helpful, non-costly legistaltion out of this bunch of miscreants is to threaten to ‘throw the bums out’. Here’s a gift for every TV watcher in the country. I just wonder how much pork is hidden in the bill …

Congress looks to lower volume of loud TV commercials
Thursday, Sep. 30, 2010
By Andrew Taylor The Associated Press

WASHINGTON – Legislation to turn down the volume on those loud TV commercials that send couch potatoes diving for their remote controls looks as if it will soon become law.

The Senate unanimously passed a bill late Wednesday to require television stations and cable companies to keep commercials at the same volume as the programs.

The House has passed similar legislation. Before it can become law, minor differences between the versions must be worked out when Congress returns to Washington after the Nov. 2 election.

Ever since television caught on in the 1950s, the Federal Communications Commission has seen complaints about blaring commercials. But the FCC concluded in 1984 that there was no fair way to write regulations controlling the “apparent loudness” of commercials. So it hasn’t regulated them.

Correcting sound levels is more complicated than using the remote control. The television shows and ads come from various sources, from local businesses to syndicators.

Managing the transition between programs and ads without spoiling the artistic intent poses technical challenges and may require TV broadcasters to buy new equipment.

To address the issue, an industry organization recently produced guidelines on how to process, measure and transmit audio in a uniform way.

The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., would require the FCC to adopt those recommendations as regulations within a year and begin enforcing them a year later. Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., is the driving force behind the bill in the House.

Its title is the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., a co-sponsor, said it’s time to stop the use of loud commercials to startle viewers into paying attention. “TV viewers should be able to watch their favorite programs without fear of losing their hearing when the show goes to a commercial,” he said.

I’ve noticed watching ESPN at my friends house that the local commercials are incredibly quiet. Like, barely audible. I wonder if that has to do with them being standard-def on a hi-def channel.

Navy Bombs Guam With Dead Frozen Mice
October 01, 2010 FoxNews

In a ploy to rid Guam of its population of invasive brown tree snakes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is bombing the island with drugged frozen mice, military news outlet Stars and Stripes reported.

Using Naval Base Guam as a starting point, scientists drop mice packed with acetaminophen from helicopters into the jungle canopy.

The drug – commonly found in Tylenol – provided a regulatory advantage because it had already undergone extensive testing, Dan Vice, assistant state director of USDA Wildlife Services in Hawaii, Guam and the Pacific Islands, told Stars and Stripes.

Guam’s snake problem began in the 1980s, when the creatures arrived on the island accidentally in military cargo. The mildly venomous snakes can grow up to 10 feet long and, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources for the State of Hawaii, are the leading cause of endangerment for some of Guam’s native animals.

“The discovery that snakes will die when they eat acetaminophen was a huge step forward,” Anne Brooke, conservation resources program manager for Naval Facilities Command Marianas told Stars and Stripes. “The problem was how you get the snakes to eat it.”

The solution was to drop the mice into the snakes’ natural habitat, the branches of trees in the jungles of Guam. By outfitting the mice with cardboard wings and green party streams, the bait could float down to the jungle and catch on the branches. The result is a hanging, deadly snack for the snakes.

Researchers began testing the system at the beginning of September, dropping 200 mice into 20 acres around the base, Stars and Stripes reported.

The effectiveness of the drop will offer insights into how well it might work elsewhere on the island – and whether it might be a key to solving a longtime ecological problem, Vice said.
