OKP Green Crew

It’s great to see the enthusiasm and volunteer list growing for the Monk Chant. That said, our efforts may end up adding to the amount of trash that piles up at the end of shows. I have been pretty disgusted by the level of garbage we produce, and it seems that because of the level of intoxication people tend to care less and less about picking up after themselves.

I was thinking we could compile a list of people willing to bring a roll of garbage bags with them to the lot. Or, if anyone else has any better ideas, please toss them out there. Some local authorities in Buffalo said that the level of garbage recently produced by the Dead crowd was twice that of a regular show. Let’s figure out a way to distance ourselves from that. Ideas?

I always bring a roll of garbage bags. I never did, and wished I did once I hit the lot.

Look for the green Jeep, and grab a bag!

garbage bags are fine, but it’s not getting to the root of the problem which is consumption. what needs to be done is a large campaign to reduce waste. not simply clean it up. at the moment, i have no ideas for the best way to approach this… I guess a good starting point would be to identify why so much waste is produced. what comprises the garbage?

Yeah we usually have trash bags w/ us. Im gonna make sure we bring some for knox. Asheville will be cause the lot is teeny tiny. So there will be trash cans cause the lot just overflows down the sidewalk.

I’ve been wondering about this too. Most of us drink beer, which produces waste. Also, when you get hungry, you eat, and that produces waste. I think the reason our shows create more waste is because we spend more time at the venue. Most events, people show up at showtime, see the event, and leave. We are in the parking lot before and after the show, eating and drinking.

So, we do need to clean it up. Reducing it would just mean we do what we do somewhere else besides the venue, and that would kill the sense of community found at these shows. People need to clean up their own shit and take it with them so as to reduce the impact on the venue and surrounding area. One thing we could do is have OKP members just try to be a good example by picking up garbage you see on the ground. I honestly think picking up trash and taking it with us is the way to do it.

I agree with everything you said except this. I cannot accept that there are no behavioral changes which would allow for us to have as much fun while producing less waste. What these changes are though, I haven’t figured out yet.

It is also the venue’s responsibility to provide adequate receptacles to put waste in…The Dead show in Buffalo was said to be lacking in cans and dumpsters and they were not strategically placed around the lot, they seemed to be all in one spot…

It all starts with the individual…Most “Real” Phans respect the scene and clean up after themselves…

It’s the Lot Scum that produce the most garbage since 80% of them don’t even go into the show…They sit in the Lots for 3-4 extra hours drinking and throwing trash on the ground while everyone else is rocking out inside…

I always bring a roll of bags and pass them out to all my neighbors in the cars around me…

I do the same. Bring the bags, distribute them, and hope for the best.
I also always clean up the area around my car before I leave the lot. If for no other reason, I really HATE running over beer bottles. I figure if other people see me cleaning up an area then they might do the same, and someone would see them, and do the same and on down the line it goes.
Lead by example, I say!

I plan on thinking locally, and acting globally.

Or something.

if more states had those .05 cents per bottle recycling thing going I could see a ton of tour people scooping up everybody’s glass bottles

Doesn’t Michigan offer like .10 cents a bottle? You could rake it in collecting bottles if so.

I think another big thing is that a lot of the lots don’t have enough places to throw the trash away so it just gets left on the ground, not condoning that but they should provide more cans or something.

i know during phillies games when there is a heavy tailgate going on people will ride around in golf carts collecting bags of trash so you don’t have to walk a mile to the one trash can on the lot

be responsible for your trash people!

Michigan offers 10 cents because they want people to actually come to their State.

BWAHAHA!

Michigan is more like Vermont…

except in the ways that matter.

Don’t get me started. Northern Michigan is a different beast than Detroit. We are sitting on the greatest freshwater aquafier in the world. We are tolerant. We worship nature. Traverse City has a greater gay straight/ratio than San Francisco. Our beer is as good as anyones. We have medical weed. Our musical history is huge. Oh we have the greatest Hockey team in the world. Half of Phish is from Jersey so don’t try to claim that one either. ANNNNDDDD we have a 10 cent deposit which means we can offset tour costs and help keep the lots’ clean at the same time. Oh do you want a house for a dollar?? We got that also.

^hahahahahaahahahahahahahaha…i’ve spent a good amount of time in both Northern michigan, southwest michigan, and vermont…vermont is definitely more cooooool. but michigan is still cool tooo.
