OKP Show Club: Week 1 - 2/17/97

The Squirming Coil >

Sometimes I feel Page’s solo goes on too long, but I didn’t mind listening to this. I like the creepy ambient jam at the end, which leads into…

Down With Disease->
Pretty cool segue. Page was noodling around and then Mike chimes pumping the DWD intro.

This jam gets pretty sick about 10 minutes in. They slow the pace down and Trey wails away. There’s a bit of start/stop jamming happening; It turns pretty spacey/funky.

Carini->

This segue always brings a smile to my face. You know, one of those shit-eating grins. I f’ing LOVE THIS SONG. This baby clocks in at 21:24 and I feel it’s the highlight of the night, but that’s just me!

Listen to this jam around the 10 minute mark. WOW.

Also, I thought Prince Caspian was coming out of this because of the way Trey/Page was wailing (with their voice) around 4:30…

Taste->

Pretty seamless segue. Now I can’t say I’m a huge fan of this song, but I feel the placement is spot on. Pretty average version, clocks in at about 7 minutes. At the end of the jamming Trey feels the opportunity to bring it back to…

Down With Disease-> !!

DWD Reprise! Feel the energy, bitches!

Suzy Greenberg->

A bit of a sloppy segue but it really doesn’t matter at all. Pretty standard version, clocking in just over 6 minutes.

Prince Caspian

Ahhh…what a great way to end a kickass set. It’s not your average Caspian, but it’s nothing to write home about either.

ENCORE

Sleeping Monkey

I’ve never liked this song. I think it sucks.

Rocky Top

Now we’re talking! I LOVE this way. Perfect jumping tune to end a great show.

good work, boys.

Good opener in Soul Shakedown Party, and a good cover as well. Its fun to hear Page try to be Bob Marley while Trey and Mike take on the role of the wailers.

I

alright, please forgive me, I’ve only listened to this show up to the end of taste->dwd reprise, but I feel I’ve heard the majority of what this show is all about. A few general comments:

THis show is all about Fishman! I found myself focusing on his playing more than anyone else, even more than Trey, who was ON. His playing was consistently energetic and dare I say spunky throughout the show.

There have been some damn good Diseases played in Europe. 7.1.98 and 6.25.97 come to mind. In fact, the second set’s jamming up to the point I’ve listened to reminds me of the first five songs of 6.25.97’s second set, which is an astounding piece of music.

Soul Shakedown opener was nice and appropriate. Nothing crazy and a relatively short tune. There isn’t a segue at all into Divided Sky. Was there a debate about that? Trey does start strumming it immediately after though. I agree Will, this is one of the best Divided Skys I’ve heard. Its not a very lengthy version (13 minutes or so), and I think that works to its advantage in this case. Some DS’s over 16 minutes drag on a tad too long imo. The composed section is played nearly perfect. I don’t think I heard one false note from Trey this entire version. His playing was very clean and energetic, much like Fishman’s throughout the show. The buildup to the end is great, led by Trey’s inspired playing.

Wilson is a nice choice after DS, and it serves its purpose, albeit with bad lyrical flubs by Trey. I dont’ think anyone really cared though, it doesn’t really bother me. I thought I might’ve heard Trey teasing something in the space before “blat boom,” but I could be wrong.

I actually listened to My Soul and Guyute! My Soul was relatively short and well played. Thats all that needs to be said. Guyute was another good version, well played with no flubs. Its a good sign the band is feeling connected enough to get through DS and Guyute with the precision they did.

Timber! Yes! This has been one of my favorite songs lately and I was excited it popped up in this set. Not a great jam, like most Timber, but, like I said, I just love hearing that riff. Great stuff. Another short version of a song in this set, only about 6 minutes.

Billy Breathes is really a great song. More awesome playing by Trey. It was a well-placed “breather” dodges tomatoes

Llama felt like almost too much of a boost after a subdued BB, but I always welcome a Llama. ANOTHER short version of a song in this set, at 4 minutes.

Bathtub Gin was only about 13 minutes, and the jam stayed within the boundaries of the usual first two or three minutes of Gin jams, but that was OK with me in this case. They did a good job of stretching it out, and I enjoyed this Gin a lot.

Golgi was Golgi. OK set closer to a very good set.

I have to run, goddamit. Maybe I’ll finish later.

As far as everyone saying there is no segue into Divided Sky… I think we need to dig up that thread about the difference between “>” and “->”. Becuase that is what The Phish Companion has taught me, and that is what I use. And there is DEFINITELY a Soul Shakedown>Divided Sky.

I didn’t think there was a difference between -> and >. I thought it was just a style choice.

Care to shed light on us (me)?

If I may:

A “->” segue is when the entire band plays fluidly right into the next song. No pauses by anyone.

A “>” segue can be when one person keeps playing from one song to another by themself.

The “>” segue is also when there is a short pause between songs. Short meaning very very short. A great example of this is the “Punch You In The Eye > Stash” on 12-30-97. My copy is not labeled as a segue, but it is definately this type of “>”.

This is described in the Phish Companion, I’m just not sure where.

Sometimes it’s hard to call, though. I think there are sometimes when just one person playing into the next song qualifies as a segue…

Segues are so varied that you can’t possibly group them all into one catagory Greg?!?!

So who’s doing next weeks?

^ I’d worry about that when we have more than four reviews for this show.

Where is your review life?

Don’t sweat the lack of reviews. It seems nobody is paying attention to my Fall 97 thread anymore either.

Greg, I have to say I look forward to your reviews. I’m pretty sure I’m also not the only one.

I LUURVE your fall 97 reviews!! Don’t stop…

don’t stop the reviews.

examples for segues…

AC/DC Bag -> Psycho Killer (no stopping at all) 12/7/97

1999 > Mike’s Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove 12/31/98…all just stop and someone leads into the next tune

Soul Shakedown Party into Divided Sky is a “>” to me.

If you guys like the reviews and even only have something simple to say about the shows in this thread or my fall 97 thread, just say it. When no one posts in a thread it dies. I want to see this thread continue on, at least.

Who has this week?

I have loved this show front to back since i got the tapes in the summer of 97. The second set was the most played show we listened to all summer with Stuttgardt and Lille right behind. The Carini Jam is my favorite part. I feel it explores every jam style that was to be common place for the year as a whole. The highpoint has to be when it sounds like a Terradactel enter’s the theater and starts to screech in a defening way. The trans from Taste back to disease is also a very high pont in the show IMO. Classic 97 shit!

Thanks for the upload life. I like the way this is going. I’m going to put up week 2 when I get home from work tongiht. I’ve got it ripping right now. If you are as avid an Ohkeepa’er as G2K or some others you already know what I’m putting up, if not I’ll let it be a surprise. I’m listening to set 2 right now and I think you’ll like this.

So what are the ground rules for these shows?? Do we have to do different years and tours from everyone else??

Not necessarily. We’re looking for shows that don’t get a lot of “hype” on teh_OKP. 2/17/97, while a monster show, doesn’t really get talked about that much. In the grand scheme of things, of course.

GR is uploading the next show, and it’s a doozy. I’m almost positive I know which one it is.
