In my opinion one of those great shows that comes right before two stellar fall '94 shows: Halloween and the Bangor show with the insane Tweezer. This show has everything I love in a Phish show: insane segues, insane improvisation, insane setlist construction, and insane energy.

I don’t have time to give an indepth review because I’ve still got the rest of fall '97 to work through, but:

  1. Simple -> Runaway Jim is great.
  2. SOAM -> Buffalo Bill -> Makisupa -> Rift is as amazing as it looks on paper, and is one of my favorite chunks of a Phish show ever.
  3. The whole second set is as good as it looks, both wide with songs and deep with jamming.
  4. I like Hood as an encore.

Sounds awesome, I’m downloading it as I type this lovely message.

Indeed. I’ll have to pull this one out. Its been a while. I only remember the melt->bill->makisupa->rift…and it was goooooooooooood.

Here is a soundboard of this show off of sendspace. I just got it yesterday and it is fantastic. Enjoy!

One of my all time favourites! The YEM especially gets my rocks off…

SET 1

My Friend My Friend - Awesome opener. Funny ending

Sparkle - sparkle

Simple - Starts of really good and really tight and has the momentum to really go places, but they get lost very soon after the lyrics and fall back on a tight albeit short, pedestrian

Runaway Jim - There is a segue there I suppose, but it is not a very good segue. I suppose you could spend all day arguing about segues, but I think this is more a > than a ->. A tight version from start to finish. Very upbeat and happy.

Foam - The best part of the set so far…until…

Lawn Boy - Great placement, and just a smooth sultry Page. This sounds like one of those nights where Page has a new shirt on. Very nice bass solo…no joking around here, just those sexy jazz notes for the ladies.

SOAM - Alright…I like what this melt’s all about, but I may have to give it another listen. Lots of feedback and ruckus around the 8-9 minute mark…it doesn’t sound at all like it is coming back to melt again. Almost sound like Fish is trying to go into a little “My Sweet One”, but alas that rhythym dies away and we are presented with.

Buffalo Bill - This might be my favorite version of this song ever.

Makisupa - The Buffalo Bill > Makisupa combo is definately what makes this second set memorable. I completely forget everything that came before this now. These last couple of segues have just been sick. Mike gives 'em a nice low “Policeman” and they are off to the beach. Sometimes I just wish Makisupa jams would never end, but at least this one has a happy ending.

Rift - Nice, fast runthrough. The whole last 4 songs ended the set nicely, though it was a pretty tame start.

SET 2

DWD - Right from the start of the jam, this one sounds like it may jam very hard. It almost sounds reminiscent of the SOAM jam in the first set. It really doesn’t go off for that long before coming back to the DWD riff, but they vary it a lot, and build the tension deeper and deeper each time. It is very energetic when it goes back into the lyrics. Lot’s of feedback after the song ends, and Trey plays some nice melodic, almost Allman-esque licks. If I didn’t already look at the setlist, I would have no clue at all where this is going. Mike is just repeating Trey’s licks back to him. Lots of crashing from Fish, it sounds like they are all trying to end this, and finally Trey concedes.

TMWSIY - The opening seems a little extended and spacey. There are no flubs, it a a pretty perfectly played version, but this song really does nothing for me outside of the gamehenge context. What happened to all that energy from DWD?

Avenu - Again, it’s perfectly played, but wheres the passion? I think what’s missing from this show is any significant Mike presence. And speak of the Devil, Mike give us a huge fuzz bass solo, and now the energy is coming back. A nice ending.

TMWSIY - yawn. Oh…a little sleepy-time jam out of this song. Jesus…is this like an ambient set? Mike sounds like he’s getting ancy…he’s trying to play fast, but the music isn’t calling for it at all. I can’t even hear page. I think he might be asleep.

Sparks - Could it be? Here we go. I can never get enough of Sparks. You ever notice how SASS kinda sounds like Sparks. Just listen to the intro part of Sparks when it is building. The first song of the show that isn’t played to perfection. At least that energy isn’t totally dead, but even still, I was expecting a bit more. It’s still building I guess. I think Trey’s just gotta turn his guitar up, that might be the problem. Since, I’m saying that, I might as well point out right now that I am listening to a SBD copy that I downloaded off of etree.

Uncle Penn - Finally Mike is given his chance to bring the energy in this room back up. I know they didn’t pause between Sparks and this, but there was really no segue. Trey’s just not giving it his all this show. I know he’s probably just trying to save some energy for the 31st, but I’ve never heard him put so little effort into a '94 show. Mike isn’t saving anything though. 2 minutes into the song we get our second Mike solo. I love Phish bluegrass, and Uncle Pen is probably the best of that genre. Trey finally does some of his fancy Trey stuff towards the end of the song.

YEM - I’m sure this is what Trey was saving it for. Tight opening, though it seems a bit slower and softer than normal. The nirvana segment has some Floydian keyboard work, but it is not as good as I thought it would be for this show, what with all the mellowness and all. It seems like almost every version of every song is very slowly and precisely played. Maybe that is because they are learning like 35 new songs to play at this point, and that’s how you learn to play songs; by playing them slower. So I guess that just kinda carried over into this show. Page is tearing up the post-nirvana segement, just trying to take it anywhere I suppose. Nice scream from the band…almost sinister…Maybe Fish is just louder than normal, his mic that is. Awesome singing…Page is hitting some really high notes tonight. I can’t believe that Page hasn’t sang a song all night. Page is now funkin that clav the way that only Page can. Nasty Page…nasty! Nice…if I didn’t know better, I might think this was a '97 version. Slow and funky, but there are lots of rhythymic changes ala Fish. This could be the coolest Tramps segment I’ve ever heard. Mike has that weird envelope effect on his bass, and it adds a lot to this version.

Post-tramps - It is still all about Page and Mike. Trey is just not pulling his weight out there. Back to that SOAM jam that he was doing in DWD as well. Interesting. Maybe there is some reason to his madness this show. All of the bigger jams so far have sounded pretty similar. At least the Trey led jams. Mike is definately trying to take these jams off in some very peculiar directs. Good B&D section. I think Mike is pulling out some classical stuff…it sounded like he was teasing something. Is Mike two bass players? Because I swear I hear two basses. Not a long B&D segement, and onto the vocal jam.

Bike - I always like me a Bike. Syd is one of my personal, musical heroes. No other musician has had that kind of influence on the way I HEAR music.

  • I can’t finish this review right now, as I’ve got to go get more herb. I think you have a general impression of my sense of the show so far.

I

My Friend, My Friend - I love this as an opener. The ending is pretty cool.

Sparkle - Yummy, I love this damn song.

Simple - Really tight, pumping version. A little on the short side, but it’s rocking.

Runaway Jim - Very cool solo by the boys, nice work by Page feeling the vibes from Trey. There’s some bad ass tension bubbles here.

Foam - I always like this following runaway jim. It would’ve been nice to hear a segue like 12/29/94. Not that I’m holding that against them. Anyway, this foam is, well, foam. There’s never much exploration with this tune. Played quite well, however.

Lawn Boy - Ahh, gotta love this one. Some jazzy bass work by Mr. Gordon.

SOAM - MADNESS. Pure beautiful tension. I love this version.

Buffalo Bill - I saw this live once, and ever since I’ve been in love with it. Very tight version…better than the one I saw!

Makisupa - Love this segue. Trey’s key words were “smoked a little herb”. You can’t get more blatant than that.

Rift - Call me crazy, but this song doesn’t do much for me.

II

DWD - The beginning of the jam reminds me of SOAM. I guess they weren’t done rocking the tension! They boys explore with this one, bring it back to DWD jamming, then explore some more. This is the type of jamming I absolutely love!

TMWSIY - Beautifully composed piece. Pretty much flawless, into, WHAT COULD IT BE?!

Avenu - cool. not much to say here.

TMWSIY - Now, I like this song, but the return always gets me a little antsy for another song.

Sparks - I love this song…really ties Quadrophenia together for me. If I was at this show I’d be jumping with glee.

Uncle Pen - I love country Phish.

YEM - Wow, this is one of the better YEMs I’ve heard in quite awhile. Page really shines on this one. The funk is here, I tell you. There’s a nice buildup to the vocal jam.

HYHU - It’s just HYHU. Nice, I guess.

Bike - It’s awesome to hear Phish play some early Floyd.

HYHU - This again? Teehee.

Antelope - It seems to me like Trey is feeling the same vibe in all of the jams he has led thus far. They kind of have a SOAM feel to them.

Sleeping Monkey - I dislike this song.

Antelope - Either I’m up too late or this jam is leading in the same direction as the other jams. A little too Trey heavy…in a bad way, unfortunately.

Harry Hood - The ultimate encore. It’s nothing too special, just a nice mellow jam to end the night.

I was going to say the same thing about that Antelope…it is the same jam as in DWD and SOAM and teased in YEM. I just don’t think they were pushing themselves all that much, at least Trey wasn’t, but they had a big night coming up and they were just in prep mode. To finish my review, I must say, the Sleeping Monkey was a nice break in that very dissonant jam they had going.

And the Hood was like a slice of triple chocolate fudge cake after a dinner of wieners and cold soup. Really mellow, much like the rest of the non-dissonant parts of the set, but it really works in the Hood unlike most of the show. Not the most epic or dynamic version, but I couldn’t ask for anything else in an encore.

I thought it was a good show, don’t get me wrong, but after reading the reviews on here I was expecting a lot more from the Split Open and Melt. The Antelpoe segue into Sleeping Monkey was pretty cool though.

I dunno, I’ve always loved this show. I guess I tend to like the underdog shows.

OK… I found this show to be really interesting. Almost like the band was just coasting into the Halloween show which had a ton of anticipation. Throughout the entire show I kind of felt like it was the band just practicing their chops before they head into the studio to pump all of these songs out.

First set starts off with a really nice MFMF. I LOVE this song as an opener. It’s a great build up, and allows the band to all get on the same page in the beginning slower section. As soon as the tempo changes, they are incredibly tight, and this song if just filled with energy. The vocals are coming off really great throughout the song, and it is a nice preview of what is to come of this set. The ending has an interesting extended vocal intro. Mike is really adding some odd noises, and Trey seems like he is really trying while singing.

Next is Sparkle, and they played it, and there were no flubs. Nothing much else to say really, the townspeople rejoiced. There is a quick > into Simple, and once again, this is nicely played, but nothing special really. More fantastic vocals during the lyrics.

A -> brings us into Runaway Jim, and the only note I wrote down is there is a really nice jam about 6 minutes to 6 and a half minutes in. Full band jamming… Just not hose.

Then comes the FOAM, and I start to be reminded of the first set of 12/29/1994. Nothing special at all in my eyes, but just well played. I was waiting for the Split Open and Melt to open this set up much like the previous show I just mentioned.

Lawn Boy comes on the heels of FOAM, and is a nice relaxing moment… Unfortunately, I don’t think this set needed this at this moment. It needed something to pick up the pace!

Split Open and Melt, here it comes I was figuring. Throughout the beginning of the song, Page and Mike are REALLY standing out on this soundboard, and their playing back and forth is amazing and one of those moments that make me love this band. Once again, the vocals sound really well, and they must have really been practicing to get in shape for The Beatles in two nights. Then the jam takes a very weird turn, one of those songs where it seems every member of the band is doing their own thing, but it all sounds right. It reminds me of the jam during the 1994-07-08/ALO Stash. Just plain craziness. However, it is not up to that level at all. As a matter of fact, I have found this Melt to be kind of mehhhh…

The segue into Buffalo Bill was interesting, and I actually thought it was Makisupa Policeman for a moment. It is a slow, funky beginning, and the rest of the song is played well. Then a quick segue into Makisupa, so I start to wonder if I was hearing Makisupa before Buffalo. This is creating a nice reggae flow after the weirdness of the Melt, and I think it is exactly what I needed. There are some very deep and funky notes coming from Mike in the beginning of the jam, and soon it turns into a very quick paced rocker. Reminds me of the Melt jam, so maybe they are just creating a giant circle…

But it crams its way into Rift. Once again, another song that sounds great with the vocals the band is producing this night. Interesting choice for a set closer, and I feel it wraps this set up pretty well.

Second set comes, and I am hoping for some magic. The first set left me a bit empty.

Some spacious sounds brings about Down With Disease, and I am hoping that this is just the starting point to an amazing set. A very quick, yet spacious, jam ensued, and it was a great choice for an opener.

Somehow this managed to segue into TMWSIY>Avenu>TMWSIY. Nothing much to be said here. I love these songs, but not really at this part of this show. I just needed something a little more I suppose…

And then SPARKS. Now we are talking. TMWSIY popped in some The Who, and I was loving this. Once again, I was ready for this show finally to take flight. Sparks turned into Uncle Pen, and I love to hear bluegrass, but this is starting to look like another “first set”. A bit dissapointed still.

1, 2… 1, 2, 3, 4, You Enjoy Myself. A nice composed section. And the only part of the show I wrote down that I felt needed to be mentioned: about 9-10 minutes in, Page is ragin’! VERY groovy notes played by the Chairman. Onto the jam and Mike is really laying it down thick, which brings it into the vocal jam. Much like the rest of the show, nothing outstanding in my eyes.

HYHU>Bike. Fish mixed up the lyrics and made a few up. Made for a fresh and interesting version, but nothing to write home about.

Run Like an Antelope. Finally, this is gonna split my head. Right? Well, it starts off really fun and goofy, with the “antelope noises” included in the beginning. OK, it quickly hits high gear and unfortunately, just as quickly, segues into Sleeping Monkey. Now I love this song, but this was one of the last things I expected, let alone wanted to hear, come out of the Antelope. A bit of a buzzkill. The segue back into Antelope starts off with Fish pounding away on the drums, and the whole band picks up like they had never left the Antelope. Pretty amazing, and saved the song for me… If they only played that short beginning to Antelope, I would have been incredibly dissapointed. Sleeping Monkey sort of killed any notion of this jam really going anywhere, so it basically fit right in with the rest of the show. Page was really shining just before the “run, run, run” section. I will always love Antelope, and to end a set is picture perfect.

Onto the encore, and Harry Hood starts up. Another slower paced intro with a lot of room for space. Once again, I have to say that this song fits into the show so well. It is an amazing song, it just doesn’t sound like the boys are really trying. Just a quick coast through, and the show is over.

<><><><>

All in all, I found this show to be right around average. There was nothing botched or played horribly, but there was also nothing played amazingly. Just a run-of-the-mill, SAFE, show. Lots of great vocal work, and unfortunately that is my one true highlight of the show.

I would say if you are trying to get someone into Phish, this is not a horrible show choice to pick. Safe enough for anyone to hear… Nothing really to scare them away.

The funny thing is, I’ve played this show at work, and nobody there is remotely a fan of Phish or knows who they are, and they hated it. But they pretty much hate all the music I play.

^Like someone said in a previous thread,

“People hate what they don’t understand”

What do the work people like then Greg?

One guy came of age in the 80s, and he likes hair metal and stuff like Boston and Journey.
Basically just imagine a place full of people who only ever have and still do listen to the most mainstream music of the past and today.

I can’t give a review but I love the Simple, Antelope > Monkey > Antelope, and Hood. I enjoyed the TMWSIY > Avenu > TMWSIY > Sparks too…

Umm…what is this thread…?

Did I miss something…?

What do we do?

It’s our club. Wanna join? :stuck_out_tongue:

Each week someone picks a show and loads it up for those who don’t have it.
He/She who picked the show then writes why they like it.

Then we all:

Listen to the show.
Review it.
The end.

Its pretty much just an excuse to converse about Phish, by specifying on one show.

Shouldn’t we have another show up soon??
