On this day - August 6th, 1945

On August 6, 1945, the first nuclear weapon was used in combat.
Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima by the crew of the American Enola Gay, directly killing an estimated 70,000 people. Approximately 69% of the city’s buildings were completely destroyed, and 66% severely damaged.
In the following months, an estimated 60,000 more people died from injuries, and hundreds more from radiation.

:-/

who gives a shit. yes they deserved to die and i hope they burn in hell.

I still never understand why we’re so worried about other countries getting the bomb when we’re the only ones in history who have actually used it. Shouldn’t they be trying to keep US from getting the bomb? Oh well…

Pretty devastating stuff. Too bad it took such a horrible thing to get them to realize world domination was not a worthy goal… or whatever their reason was for attacking the US. The whole thing seemed to be a huge tragic game of “uncle”.

Hey, this should go in the movie quotes thread.

hey, why dont you shut the fuck up

^lol ghost. touche touche

"The Japanese had, in fact, already sued for peace. The atomic bomb played no decisive part, from a purely military point of view, in the defeat of Japan." Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

"The use of [the atomic bombs] at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender." Admiral William D. Leahy, Chief of Staff to President Truman.

^that’s true.

i believe i read somewhere that they had surrendered a couple of days before the bomb was dropped but the US decided to drop the bombs anyway in order to intimidate the Soviet Union thus starting the cold war.

did i get that right? I read it in Howard Zinn’s “Declarations of Independence” a few years back but am unsure of some of the details.

i believe that played a large role. i’m sure it wasn’t the only reason but it was likely a major strategic consideration.

A few years ago, in my last semester down in Dayton, I had a freshmen History class because I am awesome like that.

One project we all broke into groups, and those groups divided into pros and cons on a subject.

Our subject was the dropping of the nuclear bombs.

I was the only one on the pro side to show up for our presentation. And I still did a better job then the four kids on the con side.

Booya!

What were your arguments for being in favor of dropping at atomic bomb?

Just curious.

is Will a lobbyist for the capitalist empire?

To be honest, I forget. And I am not pro on dropping the bombs. It is just the side I decided to take because every other person was sooooo against it. It was just a debate, and you need two sides to debate.

I know one pro was it pretty much ended the war with Japan.

or maybe you are a lobbyist for the socialistic commune?

Hmm, I was wondering if there was some interesting facts surrounding the A-bomb attacks.

does that bother you, sir?

i would say “fear of retaliation” might be one reason.
