setlist?
review??
As far as setlist, Page continually said, “and this is one from the new album.” IIRC, it went: Heavy Rotation, Runaway Bride, Maid Marion, [released single], ________, Instrumental w/MIKE, (“Hey it’s Mike!”), and then it gets fuzzy. The closer was “Stuck in the Middle with you”.
I know few of his song names, and many sound very similar to me, only in that Page seems to tend to write ballad-ish songs. There was some jamming to be had, though you could tell the band is still a little tentative together. I guess I would say that the drummer and sole guitarist were competant at best. On the way home I commented that the drummer was like Ringo, able to hold the beat, but not able to stray and create from it. There was a second keyboardist, who also sang and played guitar. I think he was just low in the mix as it was hard to discern his sound. The bassist was pretty good, though Mike tore the bass a new one when he came up.
Also, CK5 was on lights. We were right behind the board on the riser and after noticing that the lighting was very good, looked over and instantly regocnized the mad genius at work. Definitely better than any I have seen at HG.
Overall good show. Page kept saying how happy he was to be there, and looking forward to touring. I’m sure they’ll gel a little more as the tour progresses.
Nice Chris!!
Sounds like a fun night. I’m glad Mike came out of the woodworks for an evening.
Nice encore!!
Bring on the Page side baby!!!
I was at the rail in front of Jared (2nd keyboadist). I believe the song that Gordon joined them on is Down in the Basement (?). They also did Close to Home. Page solo’ed Strange Design as encore before the full band joined him for Stuck in theMiddle.
Stuck in the Middle was an odd choice. Page usually picks covers that are deep cuts and musically challenging. This was done well. But any competent band could play this.
Funniest and worst of the show - Final Flight. It’s from Page’s Vidablue days.
Funny - he comments that they’re going to do something from a couple years ago. The crowd cheers, expecting a Phish cover. He goes “not that far back.”
Worst - Vocals on FF were god awful. Jared was tentative on his harmonies the whole night. He was horrible on FF. Page couldn’t find the melody. About 10 bars into it, he looked like he wanted to stop the whole song. Fortunately, the vocals are only in the first third and everything settled in after that. However, its a very mellow song and the crowd wasn’t there for mellow.
This was a good show. Future ones - I think it will continue to be very-scripted - jamming will be planned, not spontaneous.
Overall, a good show. The band is well scripted and rehearsed on the new album. Page interacts with the crowd - lots of eye contact and smiles.
Hey Shay, I forgot to respond that I was going last night, oh well, someday there’ll be an OKP meet-up at Ye Olde HG. Sounds like you had a good time, as did we.
How did I forget Strange Design?
