Peter Jackson to produce "The Hobbit" films

By JAKE COYLE, AP Entertainment Writer

NEW YORK - Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” a planned prequel to the blockbuster trilogy “The Lord of the Rings.”

Jackson, who directed the “Rings” trilogy, will serve as executive producer for “The Hobbit.” A director for the prequel films has yet to be named.

Relations between Jackson and New Line had soured after “Rings,” despite a collective worldwide box office gross of nearly $3 billion

I was wondering when this would happen. On the bright side, at least Smog the dragon will look pretty cool in CG. Not to mention the guy who plays Gollum will get some more work…

Stevo

Now THAT is funny. Nice work…

Who would you like to see direct this?

seriously though, this is good news.

i was pissed when New Line canned Jackson. he needs to be involved in this film. i wonder who will direct? and a sequel? hmmmmm. the Hobbit is a stand-alone thing, but i like the idea that there will be so much detail put into it that it will simply be too long for a single release.

ah, my nerd glands are excreting much juice!!! The Hobbit!!! heck yeah doooooooods!!!

cooll

I really hope that Jackson steps up and directs this himself. Who really could fill his shoes?
