Phish in 3D

^twas my experience basically…I got the most out of Fish from the 3D, after seeing it Shine A Light is definitely my favorite to come of the costume set other than Cup…3D didn’t make or break, I didn’t like how the glasses make the screen a lot less bright, seemed to sort of dumb down the CK5’s lights I think…if there was a way to make a 3D movie that didn’t look weird without the glasses that’d be so awesome

Going tomorrow with tld

I went Friday night and it was a blast. LOTS of partying going on in the theater (drinking and smoking). Glowstick war during Suzy and lots of ballons flying overhead. Cops shut off the movie for a couple mins. during loving cup and told us to “have respect for once in our lives”. :unamused:
Must be getting older…I was still recovering on Sunday.
If you don’t have fun at this, you suck at Phish.

Saw it on Saturday night with my brother and sister-in-law and some friends in Detroit, and it was great. I loved getting to see the band up close like that. The theater had probably 20-30 people in it, mostly enthusiastic chair-dancers with plenty of clapping and whooping, but no overt partying going on.

Highlights included Tweezer, Mike’s, Page McConnell, The Curtain With - hell, all the acoustic tunes - and that Shine a Light was awesome. Great seeing Trey so amped up and excited. Loved the backup singers during the Suzy encore and the Stones set, they looked like they were really having a good time. I agree with Gooch tho, a little more framing for the songs would have been cool.

That said, I didn’t really need to see some mic stands and amps and monitors in 3D. While some of the shots were cool, I’d have just preferred a sharper HD film where I didn’t have to wear extra glasses the whole time. If it was gonna be 3D, we should have seen a LOT more panoramic shots of the stage from back in the crowd, so you could really get the full effect of Kuroda’s lights in 3D. Those few shots we did see that highlighted the light show looked awesome… but they were maybe 3-4 times in the whole 2.5 hrs. Overall it was a great time tho :sunglasses:

I saw it on Saturday night, and here are my thoughts:

  • The Theater: The Bridge - Philly, PA: Apparently one of the reasons it was so tough to find tickets for this theater when tix first went on sale everywhere else is becuase it was being sold to Rave Motion Pictures. The only reason I say this is becuase, apparently, Rave Motion Pictures has a contact with some bottled water company, and the bottles had not been sent to the theater yet…therefore, my bloddshot eyes, and cotton’d mouth couldn’t get a freakin bottle of water for the show. :frowning:

But, I digress.

I thought the movie was fun. I enjoyed it, and I think the 3d certainly helped to make some things extremly crisp. Close shots of all the members, I found myself scoping out their gear, and little things around them. As well as being amazed at Trey fingers. After the show, my brother did point out that it was sort of like being at a concert and watching the screen the whole time. But, the sound was awesome, and over all, i enjoyed it.

The only thing that sort of annoyed me…they used the same panning shots of the crowd several times. I just don’t get how over 3 days, you couldn’t come up with differnt crowd shots for the movie. the one shot that sticks out in my mind, and woudl be easy to find is the start of the Sunday morning set. They pan the crowd, moving towards the stage…some dude raises noth hands, and I think he might have had a beer in one, and then there is a tall blonde hair’d guy with facial hair kind of bobbing his head.
Within 30 seconds of it first showing, there it is again…the same guy rasing both hands with a beer in one, and the same tall guy just bobbing his head.

After that, i started noticing it at several different times.
It didn’t take away from the movie, I just couldn’t figure out why they needed to do it. How on earth could they not have enough footage of the crowd to use a uniquie shot each time?

Again, overall, i really enjoyed the movie. It was fun, upbeat, and enjoyable in the theater.

Some thoughts I had on seeing it…
jiggslot.blogspot.com/2010/05/di … movie.html

People seem to be missing the part about CK’s lights… the wind was to strong and it made the lights hard to get the way he wanted them, as the smoke was being blown around to much. Hence the lesser lighting spectacle on the 3D side…

Went with some good people and had a great time. Loved it and would like to hear about the DVD package soon!

The 3D stuff was cool, but I am as pumped to get this on my HD Samsung with Bose sound and check it out!

^I think the jambands.com article had it right when they said that an outdoor venue as large as this was probably not the ideal setting for 3D magic. It’s hard to create those type of textures outdoors, even without wind.

I agree about the DVD, though! It should look sweet on my 15" SD Toshiba! :sunglasses:

Dooj, 15", ummm Dooj?

I thought you had a big new TV, yes? No?

^Ha! Me? No, you have me confused with somebody else. Or maybe I mentioned something I was watching at the office? We’re all HD’d out over there, of course.

But, nah. I have one TV in my whole house and it’s 4:3, SD and tiny. Love it. Never needed anything more. If the content is good, HD doesn’t matter to me.

Ok, I thought you had just bought a new TV, I might have misread that, my bad… I’ll bet it is bigger than 15" though, right?

^Nope. Actually, the screen itself is something like 15" wide and 12" high. I can post pics when I get home. You’re gonna laugh your ass off. I just never felt the need to spend money on a better TV. My parents actually gave us a big screen HDTV for the holidays a couple years ago and we returned it because it was too big and we didn’t want to pay for HD DirectTV.

I’m all about the content.

And to bring it back on topic, that’s why I’m not swooning over this 3D crap. It’s just a gimmick to me.

Got it…

went opening night, had a great time. Crowd was very into it (glow sticks toss around and some dancing). Those 3d movies give me a head ache every time, but def worth it.

Just got back and overall had a good time!

It was a 10:00 showing on a Monday night and there were still people smoking and getting down in the aisles. The movie itself was fun, definitely left me anxious and excited for the summer tour. However, I did find the song placement odd (Where was Weekapaug?) and kind of disjointed. Also, as someone else pointed out, they kept showing the same shot of the crowd which got old after a while.

But all in all it was great footage, great sound quality, and lots of fun

They chose to play a Mike’s with NO Weekapaug @ Fest 8. The set list was Mikes > 2001 > Light > Slave to end the Fest. I was hoping for all 4 tunes once Mike got going. Alas, it was not meant to be : (

My thoughts on the movie and the whole experience

The glasses provided to me made me look like Elvis Costello.
There were too many frigging previews. And I tend to enjoy them
TLD bought glow sticks from a condom despeser in the bathroom for 75 cents (we did not throw them)
The movie felt really long especially for not standing and grooving.
Enjoyed the song selection overall even though I know there was a lot of stuff left out.
Glad to see the burple and the flame sculptures make their appearance and I loved seeing the video of things going on at the festival besides the concerts themselves.
There was about 15 or so people at this showing and during the acoustic set the group sitting in the front row screamed and cheered because apparently they saw their buddy on screen.

in closing
Good God that Suzy is amazing. I just forgot how good that was.

Went last night and thought it was awesome. I could not stop laughing out of awe for the first 10-15 min of it…the camera angles and sound quality were great in my opinion…the picture quality took a back seat because of the 3D, but I thought the 3D itself made up for it. Some great depth in some of the shots. The acoustic set was sick. Stealing Time was hetty. Overall, I’m very happy I paid the money and saw it.

Here’s to this summer!! can’t wait!!

going to see it tonight! can’t wait!

My wife and I were the only ones in the theater. I’m glad she came along even though she was pretty indifferent to the movie. I’m not surprised there was nobody else, it’s not like North Dakota’s a center of phandom.

I loved the movie. Lots of great music. I haven’t listened to Festival 8 much since last fall so it was really fresh coming back to it. The Tweezer > Maze was pretty sweet. Curtain (With) was another highlight. The Suzy really knocked me over. I’d forgotten it was that long and jammy.

I thought the 3D was mostly a silly gimmick. I mean, yeah it’s something you don’t get at home, but I’m not sure I like it. And the balloons and plumes of smoke and mike stands standing out in 3D got kind of old.
