Phish in Rolling Stone...AGAIN!

in the summer tour preview section there is a little snippit about phish in the jambands section next to furthur and widespead panic

Frontman Trey Anastasio has been on a songwriting kick over the spring, so Phish plan to test out new tunes on their massive summer amphitheater tour. “It feels too early for another record.” he says. “So my thought is to play the new songs on the road.” The ecstatic young crowd that have greeted the jam kings have Anastasio thinking that the band could keep touring for decades: “When my daughter’s friends are coming to see us. it makes me imagine what it’d be like to be 90 and doing this.”

so I guess we can expect more this summer then just Show of Life

Too bad Phish has to get lumped in the “jambands” section…or that there even has to be a “jambands” section. Oh well…I’m excited to hear these new songs.

i prefer new songs on the road, not new songs on an album…

I take what Trey says with a grain of salt.

Sure, he says it’s too early for a new album. But just watch a double album come out in the next couple of weeks.

It’s always been Trey’s way. He’s compulsive, he’s a workaholic, and he’s (to a point) somewhat ADD.

So I wouldn’t be all that surprised to see a new Phish album by the middle/end of summer.

^ i think the only new phish albums we will have by middle/end of summer woudl be live shows available from livephish.

They would have had to already be recording, don’t ya think? Tour starts in 10 days, and pretty much has them locked up most of the summer.

Either way, looking forward to new tunes, and an eventaul new album.

Also, I agree about the “too soon for a new record” thing. I would much rather hear them develop some songs on the road and give the songs time to mature in a live setting where the is higher potential for exploration. I’ve never been one to listen to Phish’s studio stuff anyway, other than Picture of Nectar.

Touring the songs only makes the jams develop. Usually their songs are set in stone from a compositional standpoint from the time they debut. There are exceptions, like Theme from the Bottom, Tela, NICU, Moma Dance … but generally it’s just that they get more comfy jamming them live. I don’t see how that impacts the studio album.

Mainly I’m just amazed when bands pace their releases to maximize profit. It’s been happening since the mid-80s or earlier, where it’s usually the record company that paces the output instead of the artist.

Personally, I’d prefer a band put albums out as the material … um materializes, rather than on a business sensibility schedule.

Again, it seems like Trey’s gonna write, album or no album, so it doesn’t matter!

Taste (Fog That Surrounds), Moma Dance (Black Eyed Katy), Twist… a couple others off the top of my head, there are more though
