PHiSH On Vinyl

Okay I’m going to pick up Hoist tomorrow, with the usual “Shit I hope they have it” routine I go thru on Record Store Day. I’ve heard horror stories, and I’ve come REAL close (last year there were exactly two copies of the Clutch record my friend and I both wanted) … but I usually get what I’m lookin for.

Phish vinyl review, on Record Store Day Eve:

The White Tape

This LP is a badass mofo IMO. I really didn’t like it, in a way, when I first had some 5th generation cassette of it. But then the CD came out in the 90s, and the sound was so much better, that I kinda decided I enjoyed it “for what it was”. But this LP is great. All pros, no cons. White vinyl is a great touch. The way side A and B break up, and the bands make it evident what track you’re hearing and how long you have to endure its madness  Throw in the shiny silver to offset the white, and I’m tellin ya, it’s the best possible way - the only way - to fully enjoy this particular album.

Junta
I’d waited years in hopes there’d someday be a Junta vinyl, and lo. This thing is so super deluxe too, it’s kinda silly how awesome it is in that regard. Triple gatefold, triple record, custom labels, heavy duty black inner sleeves (I think most of the JEMP releases have those?), embossed 3D-ish cover art.

I had always envisioned Junta as a double record w/Dinner & A Movie closing the first record, like how it ends side A of the cassette. The triple record layout is a little weird to me, but maybe it’s worth whatever fidelity is saved? I don’t know, seems to me they could throw it on two records, but then I kinda have the same angle on the Lawn Boy and Hoist vinyl layouts. The etching on Junta side six is admittedly great. Extended Contact is good too. The track layout on record two’s kinda wacked. C: Dinner And A Movie/Divided Sky D: David Bowie

Anyway, aside from the weird five sided-ness, which might be just fine anyway, this thing is just crazy, one of my favorite vinyl pieces ever.

Lawn Boy
I didn’t get the JEMP one cuz I spin me an original two-sided single vinyl edition, which is pretty great. Sometimes I think Lawn Boy might be the best album they ever did. Sometimes I want the new double vinyl JEMP records edition too. But then I’m totally happy with the two sided one. Maybe the remaster sounds even better, but what I got sounds pretty sweet. I really like how side A and B of the original record look the same, as I blabbed about in an earlier post.

A Picture Of Nectar
This one’s got a great track layout, love how each of the four sides are split up. It really needs to be a double record, so it’s totally merited. I’m glad Landlady ends the first record, and that Stash stars side 2. Poor Heart makes a great side A closer.

Sound quality of this thing is out of this world. The high end gets a little chunky in places, a little distorted or something, but maybe it’s my system I dunno.

The Tweezer “skip” is a little bit unforgiveable, I don’t know why I haven’t found anyone else who seems to know about that.

The cover art source appears to be low res, so that’s kind of a minus. I read somebody complain that they’d have preferred it didn’t have the “PHISH” across the front cover, since original CD pressings didn’t have that … I sort of agree. Sometimes I wish the plain orange (sans Nectar photo overlay) was the record label (like the CD). Or like, two of the four were the orange maybe. So this is the only one so far where I kind of feel like the artwork is a little disappointing. But I will say that the disappointment is slight.

And hey, I love the big fat glass of milk pic in the gatefold. It’s Nectar on vinyl, don’t get me wrong, it’s a sweet unit. Ultimately I’m happy with it. Not as nice as Junta or Rift, but still quite a nice record for sure.

Tweezer skip is the only real complaint … I bet they didn’t know about it, it’s during that chaotic slowdown at the end of the song. I assume it’s on everyone’s pressing since it’s also on my mp3 download. Anyone hear that?

Rift
What a sweet piece of vinyl this thing is. I got the colored one, was totally worth all the trouble someone else went thru on my behalf (thx PYK), lol. It’s kind of a dark grey/green color that’s somehow not quite a match but not a clash either … but it’s cool looking, so it’s a win.

The sound is incredible. The Rift and Nectar albums have a little more of a ‘processed’ sound I think; Junta and Lawn Boy are more organic. But on the records it all sounds a little less processed somehow. I don’t know why that is. I’m not convinced it’s not an illusion that records seem to sound better or more legit. But I still enjoy the perceived difference. Everything’s bigger. The tracks are visible. It’s broken into album sides.

I love how it sounds to have the music stop at the end of Maze, in the same way that Poor Heart closes the side well. Leads me to my only complaint about this release: I wish they’d let MyF start the second half, like the cassette release did. I got real used to the idea that the first half ended at Wedge. But aside from my being attached to the idea, I find the segue between MyF and Weigh to be the more important one to preserve. I’m assuming the reason for My Friend My Friend to close side B is to preserve it’s crossfade from the Wedge, but isn’t the suspensed chanting into the abrupt laugh into the plucky opening arpeggios of Weigh a more important sequence of noises?

Anyweigh that’s not too bad of a thing ultimately. The labels look great. As I said, the colored vinyl is very nice. The extra art that comes with this is insanely cool, it’s like a blacklight type of deal I imagine … flourescent lite blue almost. So detailed and fun to look at. The main cover art and insert, and the gatefold, are all top quality, just perfect. I just noticed tonight that the INSIDE of the cardboard is actually dark blue.

“That does it” I said to myself, “I’m writing a lengthy post about the Phish records tonight.”

Hoist
Well this puppy comes out tomorrow, we’ll see! I seem to remember this album as a single record length album, so it’s weird knowing they’ve made a double album out of it. Hope to score the colored orange/pink splatter edition. I am smelling a theme here with the short album sides, preserving fidelity as a priority over album side flow sensibilities. Side B Lifeboy/Sample, I understand. That’s weird dudes.

Billy Breathes
Still lukewarm on this album after all these years. 20 of em. Maybe I’m the one who’s still upside down, hahaha. I’ll call the side layout of this eventual release (Fall 2016 RSD??): Side A: Free/Chz0/Waste B: Taste/CTB/Talk C: Theme/Train/Bliss D: Billy/SweptAway/Steep/Caspian

Story of the Ghost
I’m lucky to have nabbed the Elektra one, it’s nice. Torn about whether to buy some two record edition JEMP will hopefully release eventually.

Farmhouse
I’m lucky to have nabbed the Elektra one, it’s nice. Torn about whether to buy some two record edition JEMP will hopefully release eventually.

Siket Disc
This thing is a badass of a record. I’ll be spinning this one again soon. I like that the vinyl edition helps me focus on the individual tracks, you know cuz you can look right at 'em. This record came out very nice. From the matte finish on the cover, to the gatefold pics, to the heavy duty record with the stylish labels, I have zero complaints about this one.

Round Room
Undermind

Here’s to future vinyl excitement! Maybe Round Room will be a triple record, lol…

Joy
Sharp piece of vinyl. I’m fond of the artwork, the layout, the labels. Record two is kinda cool how it relegates TTE & 20 Yrs Later to this no mans land second record that you have to put on, on purpose! I feel like it’s helpful somehow, in digesting the Joy material. Some of those tunes are gold, others you need to kinda … be ready for!

Party Time
Similar to Joy, I find this album has like two or three songs that I really have to be intentional about embracing. But the vinyl is truly killer. Again, having it on this format is truly worth all that my (other) friend went thru to obtain it for me (thx clevername). Having it broken down into four sides is helpful for ease of digestion. The layout is a little bit awkward because some of the worst songs open album sides, IMO. But overall I really dig Party Time. It’s strong moments are fuckin’ great. I doubt I’d appreciate it as much without the record.

Fuego
Orange vinyl awwww yeaaaahhh. I think my needle has trouble with this one sometimes, like the record’s made of unusual material or has gunk in the grooves … but it’s a record I’ve spun a bunch, very nice packaging. Blank side four is like whatever, I guess you like your weird vinyl layouts Phish. I dig this album mostly, kind of cold on some songs, but love the rest of it.

MSG 12/31/95
I’m starting to want this finally, now that the sticker shock has been absorbed. I’m in no hurry certainly. But I bet I’d love it.

Two Soundchecks
Wish I’d nabbed this @ face. Don’t have this either.

Alright, that’s that. What’d I forget. When’s A Live One comin out. I’ll buy it I swear ta gahd

Thing’s sweet. No issues with this one. Personally would have chosen to open side B w/Riker’s Mailbox. But you know, winners can’t be losers, that’d be fucked up.

Nice!

Good looks…only two I’m missing.

amazon.com/Phishs-Live-One- … inw_strp_1

Looks like this could be a cool thing … 160 pages on just this live album? Why’s it in a book series named 33 1/3 - the same as vinyl record speed in RPMs? I guess it has nothing to do with a vinyl release. Yet.

https://www.jambase.com/article/phish-release-live-one-vinyl

Really feel like they could have done this on 3LP but that has not been their style for any of the previous releases. Gumbo/Montana doesn’t even break 10 minutes and that’s likely all there is on side B.

I just got ALO, it’s pretty impressive. Which suits the music of course, what a release this is. I really like the color layout, the labels, the actual box. So far what I’ve listened to sounds just unbelievably good.

My friend Dan got a copy too, but his is defective on the YEM side, anyone else have trouble with it? He tells me his Junta vinyl is missing the very ending of Foam as well! Along with the error near the end of Tweezer on A Picture of Nectar vinyl (which I’ve assumed is inherent to all Nectar pressings … or at least the first one?), the errors are adding up … my copy of Fuego is on the orange vinyl and is kind of wonky; skips a LOT on the title track, and tends to be finicky otherwise, like I gotta keep cleaning the stylus yet there’s no dirt build-up.

I’m about halfway thru that ALO book I mentioned above, which is a tough read but pretty rewarding too. Glad I got it, but hesitate to recommend it. It’s kind of overly verbose, I guess you’d say, like, overboard with the fancy talk. Just seems to complicate things unnecessarily is what I mean.

I’m wrapping up what I think is my fourth listen to the ALO vinyl, and it’s been tremendous.

Things that bothered me at the time of its release now seem like solid attributes. I didn’t understand why more material wasn’t being represented - only 12 tracks and so much redundant to the studio songs (sooooo much material still not commercially available). Then, it felt so clinical that in a way it didn’t seem like it could be live, because no traded show ever sounded this well-engineered. So that was weird. It still doesn’t seem live because the sound quality is so pristine (and the performances are tight as a f’n jar that won’t f’n open g*ddammit) so it was not feeling like typical live Phish.

Now though, I’m so grateful for the unbelievably good sound this album’s got. And regards to the material they chose, it’s really simply a classic first live album. It promotes the back catalog, shows they play the single (lol), demonstrates they bring it live and offer some adventure along the way. And how can I really complain when they give us three classic non-studio cuts, and three new ones (counting Montana!) … ? Harry, Slave, Gumbo, Wilson and Simple are all outstanding, if not definitive, versions.

Having focused on it with fresh ears so many years later, I honestly wonder if this is their greatest release of all. Just that blown away by it right now.

One more post on this, lol.

The ALO Book I mentioned is good. Really glad I stuck it out. The author especially shines where he discusses how the Hood and Tweezer break new ground for the band (I think Stash is in that category too personally). He just has a habit of constantly throwing in the fattest vocabulary he can vernaculate.

Was fun to have the book to read as I listened to this amazing album.

Each band member shredded their asses off in those days (like eat your heart out Eddie VH and Randy Rhodes and Mike Portnoy and Rick Wakeman and Shredder from the Turtles) and I wish to personally thank them for it. All four guys are just at the top of their game on this album in so many ways, and the instruments sound like a dream come true.

Thank God it’s all on tape.

Dude, totally agree with all your thoughts on ALO vinyl release. This arrived on the release day via Amazon Prime and I instantly went to the Slave. I always cranked up the CD during the quiet parts before the jam to listen to the crowd. On the vinyl, this is very pronounced especially when you turn it up to 11. Like you said, these are all definitive versions of the classics and the best part is they sound like you’re in the arena with the band. The production quality on the vinyl/box/etc is all top notch. This will end up being the Phish vinyl release I’ll most often go to in the future.

On a side note, as good as this sounds through my stereo system I highly recommend using (noise reducing) headphones. I’m pretty sure you’ve mentioned the benefits of them before but everyone else should really follow suite. It’s really the best way to listen to music. Don’t get me wrong, I still crank my stereo often too, it’s just not as crisp.

To continue the double posting fashion in this thread

Anyone own the MSG 6LP set? I wrote this one off when it was originally released due to the price tag ($130?) but now, after listening to A Live One a couple times, I got the itch to buy this. It can be had for around $150, which ends up being $25/lp. It’s sometimes hard to justify paying that much for a single LP which is the same reason why I passed on the Dead Cornell 3 LP release ($99). My collection is pretty extensive (discogs.com/user/booztravlr/collection) so I don’t really need this but…why not, right? I’m mainly just curious to hear about the sound, etc. from anyone who owns it.

Was looking ahead to Slip, Stitch and Pass. Guessing this will also get a vinyl release but the breakdown needs to be refined to handle all the segues.

LP01 - A [10:48]
Cities 5:19
Weigh 5:29

LP01 - B [26:48]
Wolfman’s Brother 13:50
Jesus Just Left Chicago 12:58

LB02- A [25:08]
Mike’s Song 13:52
Lawn Boy 2:56
Weekapaug Groove 8:20

LP02 - B [10:04]
Hello My Baby 1:19
Taste 8:45

Basically, Weigh just jumps up a couple tracks. When I started to lay this out I was hoping they’d include a couple additional tracks to make this a 3LP release but it seems like one simple move can keep this as 2LP.

I read the ALO book earlier this year. It’s definitely worth your time.

Have been pretty tempted to get the ALO vinyl but haven’t justified spending that much on a record yet. Might wait to find a used copy.

SS&P vinyl would be awesome if they can fit it on two discs so it’d be a reasonable price.

I’m lucky to make time to listen at all, so I don’t have the luxury of listening to a real good sound too often, but what I’m getting by listening to is pretty okay. Got some decent earbuds, car stereo’s a’ight, bedroom stereo okie dokie. Yeah, I haven’t spun the record since I bought it, but this one won’t stay in the box long. What a strong Phish album.

I do not. I was similarly tempted to nab one after experiencing ALO though! But I’m not partial to that concert, and have probably never listened to it. That’s what always seems to derail any potential scheme to go and get one.

Dude I’m not gonna quote the epic SS&P post, but it’s really well done and actually educational, even. Makes me want to grab that show and check it out. But I’ll say this: They’ll never release a side w/ 25 minutes on it, or Junta would’ve been a double record.

Good luck looking for used Phish records at reasonable prices. They must be pressing exactly at demand, in order for them to all be expensive, all the time. I almost threw an ‘lol’ onto that sentence, except it’s not that funny, is it?

Yeah, really glad I stuck it out with that book. There was a point early on where I didn’t think I could do it, but by the end it got real good and the pages were a-turnin’.

I don’t know how they’re doin it, but it’s like the used copies aren’t that cheap, man. NYE 95 is still going for big dollars and so it’ll wait til I can find it at a price that’s (a lot) better for me.

I wonder if it’s down to the ‘limited pressing’ nature of Phish records, but they’re plain ol’ expensive, no doubt.

So I guess the MSG vinyl release has a long side, like 25+ minutes? Maybe they make exceptions for live albums on the side-length rules. Who knows.

Picked up Billy Breathes, anybody else? Seems like a standard triple sided Phish vinyl release.

^ How does the long side sound? It is my understanding that they can squeeze the grooves together, but they have to sacrifice quality to do so.

Also, do they just leave the 4th side blank? If so, that seems like a waste. (Come waste a side with me…)

Still salty about that wasted 4th side. Filler would be so cool. Like throw on a sweet 20 minute jam or something.

Hoping to have the $$ at some point in my life to grab more Phish vinyl. Currently have Joy (was gifted to me), Party Time, Big Boat, White Tape, and Siket Disc.

Would most like to have SotG. Maybe if they do another pressing. Just upgraded to a real turntable (AT-LP120) from our dinky AT-LP60 after recognizing that I really didn’t want to be damaging our records. Doesn’t hurt that the sound quality improved fairly dramatically too.

^^ I don’t have the MSG record, so I don’t know … yeah the fourth sides are all blank! In the case of Junta, it’s the sixth side. That one is particularly annoying to me … If they ever issue a Junta that squashes the studio album onto two records (throw the CD’s bonus tracks in as a third record maybe), I’d buy it again.

^I bet SOTG gets a triple sided JEMP release. Farmhouse too. They both got issued on vinyl when they were new, but that was true of Lawn Boy, and that still got JEMP’d.

Only took me 9 months to break down and get this. Guess I could have saved $30 had I bought it back in November. I recently played the whole show a couple weekends ago while smoking brisket/ribs/chicken. Anyways, the playing is so tight on most of these tracks. Plus, there are 10 originals and 4 covers not available anywhere else. Even the duplicate tracks (Reba, Maze, Chalkdust, YEM) are really well played, it’s not a big deal to double down on some vinyl.

[thread jack]
Btw, back in November I opted to get this one instead…so, not all was lost.
https://www.discogs.com/Miles-Davis-Miles-At-The-Fillmore/release/5703661
I had the original 2lp release but it was so chopped up to fit on 4 sides I had to go get the entire 4 show run. The extra tracks fill in the gaps from the Fillmore West run (Black Beauty) so also completed that show as well.
