I always played the A and G barred as well while playing that song, for the same exact reason, too. Plus, it just sounds better to Bar A and G, and then play the “Standard” D afterward. That’s just my opinion, though. 'Tis a very fun song to learn and play, especially live. The crowd always digs Franklin’s…
Blind Melon- Change- A G D A (play around with the standard A G and D chords and you’ll hear the licks)
and then G D A, I think, during the chorus
I just learned that one a week ago, so it’s still new to me, but easy.
I just completely learned Let It Loose not long ago. It’s not easy at first, but once you get it down, it’s so worth it!!
More easy songs off the head-
I Know You Rider- D C G
F C F DGD?
Goin’ Down The Road Feelin’ Bad-
E A E A E B7
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxx xxxx
E A E
xxxx xxxx xxxxxxxx I think… Play around with it. I really need to get an acoustic guitar so I can start playing again! AHHH!!
Learning any of the Standard Blues changes is VERY HELPFUL to learn, and mostly very simple.
ALSO! Check out WholeNote.com ! SERIOUSLY, that website is amazing for all levels of playing/learning. There’s even a metronome and a tuner built in to the site!
Shit- I had all that spaced out, but it didn’t let me post it that way. Dammit. Sorry. You’d prolly end up better just looking up tabs anyways than learning from my drunk ass.
hiccup
not a phish original but still fun to strum along. this might not be totally right but it’s what it sounded like to me just now. just play the chord over the word it’s over and keep strumming bluegrass till the next one. i didn’t do the whole thing, just the first verse and chorus, but the chords are the same for the rest of the song. also i play the little intro part i do before the chords up close but it’s kinda dark so you can’t see what i’m doing really until i sit down and do it at normal speed. i just uploaded it so the quality might improve later. this is all by ear and there are some flubs here but you can basically hear how it goes. enjoy!

Nellie Kane
…D…G…
As a young man I went riding out on the western plain
…D…Bm…A…D…
In the state of North Dakota I met my Nellie Kane, I met my Nellie Kane
…G…
She was living in a lonely cabin with a son by another man
…D…
Five years she had waited for him
…Bm…A…D…
As long as a woman can, as long as a woman can
…G…D…
I don’t know what changed my mind
…A…D…
'Til then I was the ramblin kind
…G…D…
The kind of love I can’t explain
…A…D…
That I have for Nellie Kane
Well she took me on to work that day, to help her till the land
In the afternoon we planted seeds
In the evening we held hands, in the evening we held hands
Her blue eyes told me everything a man could want to know
And it was then I realized that I would never go, I would never go
CHORUS
Now many years have gone by, her son has grown up tall
I became a father to him and she became my all, she became my all
CHORUS
