Phish plays Exile... the conspiracy!

Was the Exile cover a marketing tactic?

  • No way! It’s all just a coincidence
  • The Rolling Stones are capitilizing off Phish!
  • Yep.
  • Doojer should not be allowed to start polls.
  • Obligatory towel option.

OK… here’s one for you guys…

There sure has been a whole lotta Exile on Mainstreet going on lately, huh? Now, personally, I love it. It’s a fantastic album and I, for one, never seem to get tired of it. That said… let’s speculate for a moment, shall we?

Now, we know the band loves the album and we know they have played Lovin’ Cup for quite some time. But, part of me can’t help but… notice… the timing. Of course, one could assume that it’s all just an interesting coincidence that Phish covers “Exile” on Halloween '09 only to be thrust back into the spotlight when the re-release is announced less than a year later-- right before summer tour, and at the same time as the 3D release. Or, perhaps the Rolling Stones organization took notice of Phish’s passion and decided to re-release the album…

But there is a 3rd scenario. One that wreaks of a mainstream marketing team with ideas like 3D movies and 4/20 screenings…

Did management tell Phish to do Exile? :astonished:

It certainly hasn’t hurt the band’s agenda. Every press release I read about the Exile re-release mentions Phish. Every one. Some mention them having covered the album, some plug the Fallon appearance… but they all mention it. Could this possibly be some genius marketing at work?

Trey did open for the Stones too,…

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was marketing.
They are under Red Light Management now right? New guys in charge.

Other bands I like, their fans get pissed when management blows a great marketing opportunity.

Not us.

Seriously, I don’t really care. Phish isn’t their own management anymore, so I fully expect more traditional/corporate management maneuvers.

Hopefully it means more songwriting & practicing (2009 is evidence of that) and fewer debilitating drug habits!!

I am so much more concerned with the caliber of their performance, and I couldn’t have expected them to deliver any better than what we witnessed last year. The strength of their return, on a strictly musical level, is criminally understated.

^Good answer! No fun. But good!

Damn, had this great response all typed out and blamo! Gone into cyberspace. So allow me to re-retort.

I personally don’t think it’s some secret marketing thing. Really just a coincidence. I mean, wasn’t Exile one of the albums being tossed around when the covered Remain In Light?

Now, if the Stones were to cover…say…Junta in it’s entireity, then I might change my mind. But until then, I think it’s just a coinkidink.

Oh, and yes, count me as the obligitory “towel” vote.

Hahahah, “Doojer should not be allowed to start polls,” nice.

TOTALLY BRAH!

it’s official dooj- you’re now a towel.

Haha! Yes!

I’d like to thank all the fine people on the Pa that helped make this dream a reality.

the Rolling Stones ARE capitalizing off of Phish but i don’t think it is part of a marketing strategy. I think the Velvet Underground and Talking Heads also capitalized off of Phish when their albums were covered.

why would the Rolling Stones need Phish to promote them?

I was kinda thinking the other way around…

I’m pretty sure The Rolling Stones are way more popular than Phish. If anything one could argue that Phish was capitalizing off of all the albums/artists they’ve covered for Halloween, but I just view it as them paying tribute to bands that they love.

Hmm… maybe I wasn’t as clear as I thought I was. (must be the towel coming through!)

I definitely meant that Phish Inc. chose Exile because of the upcoming re-release. As in, Phish Inc seeing a good marketing opportunity for the next tour and their 3D movie.

It may be their company, but I doubt Phish feels any need for marketing.

Sorry…I just don’t buy it…you honestly think one Halloween show and one performance on Jimmy Fallon of all shows is really going to affect the phish fanbase one iota?

Like I said, every article I’ve read about the re-realease has mentioned Phish. Every one. And the re-release happened to be announced right before Phish 3D? Right before tour sales started?

Just thinking maybe someone at Phish Inc. knew it was coming and that it would give the band more buzz if they chose it.

Do you know why Trey was in Rolling Stone Mag this week?

Because they are performing on Fallon this week/tonight. You’re implying that Phish paid for that coverage in Rolling Stone?

^No. I’m implying that they’re benefiting off the Exile buzz. Which is totally fine. I’m just wondering if this all had something to do with the choice in the first place.

I mean, they have definitely hired a marketing monster with Red Light/AEG on board.
