All I caught was Trey’s speech but it was a good one. It really felt like he was speaking from the heart.

The band sounded awesome(Trey’s high harmonies were slightly lacking on the 1st song,but his throat must be strained from TAB tour) and that 2nd tune rocked, horns were pretty neat and Cactus KILLED…

Hmmm…I haven’t seen any of it but I heard the local morning show cover. They basically said that most of the show stunk, that Phish stunk and that the Stooges basically saved the whole thing. I heard all of Iggy’s speech and most of their performance of I Wanna Be Your Dog and it sounded pretty damn sweet. I guess Iggy ran into the aisles and was just scaring the crap out of all of the suits down there. It’s kind of weird when you have all these corporate types watching a band who basically can’t stand those type of people…Iggy even had a few mentions of them in his speech.
And this is just opinion but let’s not have some revisionist history here…I think Genesis was FAR better with Collins than Gabriel. The only Gabriel-era stuff anyone remembers is Lamb Lies Down on Broadway which has some half-good, half-weird tunes and Gabriel’s got solo tunes like Big Time and Shock the Monkey which basically make me puke compared with the huge amount of good Collins/Genesis songs in that same period…it’s not even close. Collins may be a jerk but he was better for that band. Land of Confusion and Turn It On alone blow anything Gabriel did out of the water.
A strange choice by Phish playing No Reply At All…that’s an okay tune but I would have preferred a rousing Turn It On anyday. Phish could have fun with that tune.
By the way, thanks for these links. I can never get YouTube to function at work (and I can’t play loud music anyway) so a download is much more preferable.
Come on Steve-o…You’ve obviously never heard any Gabriel-era Genesis. Big Time and Shock the Monkey aren’t Genesis songs. Also, Collins was in the band still when Gabriel was the lead singer, he just played more of a backing role, which is where he shines. If you really like Phish, you should totally dig early Genesis since that is where a lot of Phish’s sound is derived from. At least get Selling England By the Pound. Phil Collins’s best song ever is on that album and, in listening to Trey speak last night, that album probably had the biggest impact on him/them overall. I’m just saying, don’t dismiss early Genesis until you’ve at least heard some, and I’m not just talking a song or two, but they were an album band, and they made deadly albums, so listen to one/all of them. I mean really, all this music is freely available now, so at least give it a listen before you judge.
I’d say comparing Collins Era Genesis to Gabriel Era is like comparing Post-Waters Floyd to anything pre-Final Cut. Just straight up blasphemy.

Honestly - it looked like their monitors weren’t working. Trey kept looking around confused, and backing off the mic. It felt like they were playing very safe, trying not to offend anyone. I’m sure some PR hack loaded them up with do’s and don’ts beforehand. They should have played songs that were a little more fun. The fact that the whole show kicked of with “Watcher of the Skies” was a mistake - and probably not their call.
Trey’s speech was good, though. He is obviously a fan, and I thought it was cool that he mentioned My Bloody Valentine, Radiohead and “Remain in Light”.
I thought Phish sounded good, high harmonies are not their strong point, music sounded good though, Cactus was way up in the mix as he should be…
Iggy’s speech was great but I felt the performance was drab…Crowd was soooooo stuffy looking and Iggy did not go crazy…
This is what happens when you charge $1200 a person or whatever silly fee the tix cost, you don’t get the hardcore fans…
That’s part of my point. I think that a lot of the “Genesis was better with Gabriel” people haven’t heard any either. Every time I hear someone rip on Collins and him “ruining Genesis” I ask them to name a Gabriel-era song and they can’t. Now I think folks here are more well-versed in their opinions so I won’t accuse anyone of that here but the “Genesis was better with Gabriel” thing is SUCH a cliche right up there with stuff about how Bono is such a jerk. I get tired of cliches. And yes, I’ve heard some of the Gabriel-era stuff…I had a roommate play Lamb Lies Down on Broadway constantly…it’s most weird music that doesn’t seem to go anywhere. I guess I like the Collins stuff better.
I know. I wasn’t comparing pre-Gabriel to post-Gabriel. I was comparing Gabriel solo to Collins-Genesis…both brought out music at the same and the Genesis stuff under Collins during the same period was MUCH better. Did Gabriel suddenly lose the ability to make good music when he went solo? You can’t compare the post-Gabriel-Genesis to when he was there because Collins was still in both bands…he could have been behind half of the Gabriel-era songwriting for all we know. I wasn’t intending to compare the two Genesis eras…just that Gabriel is overrated…that probably wasn’t very clear.
That’s not blasphemy. I think Waters was taking Floyd in a direction that wasn’t its roots with The Wall and Final Cut. And I say that Division Bell stands up to a lot of Waters-era Floyd stuff. And the live shows were still top-notch without him.
Anyway, it appears as though I’m stuffing my foot in my mouth here so I’ll stop. It makes me look like I’m ripping on the old Genesis when I’m not.
