i saw them last year and it was a pretty good show…nailed YEM, dind’t finish it but segued into theme from the bottom…that was cool. good loving cup, horse>silent…pretty much all of it was good except first tube…the only two versions of this song i’ve heard live (this being one and the other being performed by the original 70VP) have sucked giant balls. I don’t know what it is, but i’m pissed i’ve havent seen a good one yet…sorry, got a bit off track. Anyway, see these guys…its a pretty cool experience
I saw Phix about 6 months ago or so, I thought it was alright but nothing special. Really good Mike’s Groove, YEM, and Tweezer. However I felt a lot of it was not up to par, especially Hood and Stash… BLAND.
I also saw the Helping Phriendly Band this summer, and I definitely think they play better, but I do not like how the guitarist tries to mimic Trey by “mouthing his notes”.
never heard of the Helping Phriendly Band, though what a great name for a band! yeah, if i saw someone doing that, it would simply bother me. though i once saw a band called Llama (no relation to the song, or to Phish-lore…i asked), and thier guitar player was SWEET! he mouthed his notes, and played “Trey-like”, but it was all him. maybe that’s what happens when you are actually “channeling” the music. i don’t think Llama exists as a band anymore, which is such a shame. they brought IT.
I have never heard or seen either of those bands, but they sound cool. I’d see them if they come to my neck of the woods. I also heard about another phish tribute band called Weekapaug Orchestra (from some wookie@Bonnaroo) and heard they are pretty good too. Might be worth checkin em out.
I saw PHIX two weeks ago @ a 1 day festival in beautiful Minn. They played a special late night show that went from 1 in the morning till right around 5 a.m. It was pretty damn impressive listening to them. I got to hear a grip load of songs from the way early Phish days. That was sweet. I really enjoyed myself and that’s all I can really say.
I noticed that their piano player really wasn’t up to par…he had trouble doing a lot of stuff. The one that sticks out in my mind was the little lick in harry hood played at around 3:19 in the A Live One version. He kinda sucked…in my opinion
thats all…
It would be sweet if the sound of their vocals matched more closely with Phish’s. I think DSO does a good job of this with their show and how they match the dead’s sound pretty much to a T. They do it really really good.
i’m not sure, but dosen’t DSO play like, actual Dead shows, song-for-song, note-for-note? that’s a pretty cool thing…i think…yeah, it is.
the thing i like about Phix is that they let people come up w/ fantasy setlists and then actually play them. complete with segues and all. i know it’s not the same (their vocals sound different, pianist isn’t up to par etc…), but that’s a pretty cool service to perform for “the locals”. i’ve never seen them personally, but listening to the bits and peices on their websight is intriguing!
No matter what opinion disagrees with me (I’m sure many will), Dark Star Orchestra is great. In my opinion now, they are not even a cover band, they are a band that loves to spread love and good music. They are THE best “cover band”, and they definitely do not match the GD, but they come as close as possible. And anyone who disagrees, should listen to the Gathering of the Vibes show… Just plain amazing along (almost) anything JG has done himself.
DSO definitely plays Dead shows “song-for-song”, but NOT “note-for-note.”
They play in the same style the Dead played at the time, but I do not think they just “recreate” the experience… because that is IMPOSSIBLE.
It is definitely fun seeing HPB or Phix, but DSO is a completely different story in my mind… (which may be off the axis right now).
i agree with charliejack on the fantasy setlists…thats probably one of the coolest fan-to-band interaction…very good idea
I think I might get a chance to see Phix in NYC this week, I’m debating if I wanna see them on weds, or The Breakfast on Friday then i’m definitly seeing Tea Leaf Green on Saturday. But i only got so much funds to see shows. But i’ve been looking forward to these shows for a loooong time since i didnt get to go to Moe.down.
If the decision is between Phix and the Breakfast… I would definitely choose the Breakfast, they are truly great and still relatively unknown it seems to me.
I was orginally planning on seeing the Breakfast instead of Phix, but I can’t wait all the way until Friday to see a show! Im dyin here bummin around my home town until I get a real job and get the hell outta here.
What ever happened to these guys? Usually right around this time every year, cover bands start crawling out (which is sometime’s a lot of fun!) Really gets you pumped to see the real thing… ![]()
Phix called it quits right about the same time the Phish announced they were coming back. they played their last show at some festi in Colorado, I believe.
But yeah, if memory serves correctly, they are dunzo.
They also did something in Florida, did they not? These guys were good and were great folks too!
I saw them in Troy, NY in 2005 and I remember being pretty impressed, but also sad that the real thing didn’t exist anymore.
You are correct sir. I saw them at Langerado in Big Cypress in 2008 and then again later in the year at 10KLF. I think I saw the only two shows they played after their breakup…pretty funny considering I don’t think they are very good. They had the keyboard player from Leftover Salmon sitting in with them at 10KLF, but I think MMW were playing at the same time so we kind of ditched out on that Phix show early.
The Langerado late night set wasn’t terrible, but you could tell they hadn’t played together for a while. I did get to hear Destiny Unbound though and I remember everyone thinking that was quite a treat.
I saw Phix in Ann Arbor sometime in 03-0 maybe?
They chose to play the setlist i submitted to their website and gave me two free tix.
It was okay
anyone heard of, heard or even seen Phix? these guys are pretty damn good. they can pull off just about any phish tune quite well, and their jamming capabilities are very impressive. it’s somewhat bothersome to me that there is a phish tribute band, but that’s just because it’s like a teaser of the real thing. it’s also just about the closest thing to it as well. i would definately consider checking them out in this dull, grey post-Phish world. check em out: www.phixband.com
oh the depths we sink to when there is no Phish ![]()
