the first time I heard this was at the Lemonwheel, no one in our group had heard it, and all ebing very messed up thought it was a new song being a combination of four songs leading to “I hear Mike’s”…“are they playing it over Llama?”…“Is this DWD reprise?” Very comical when we all realized later what this monster was. I think this was one of their last great tunes, generally very high energy. Being more musically free flowing than most, I would find it hard to get bored of Piper.
Sick build up
The Farmhouse version is perfect. This song got better and better over time. Obviously, grab the SPAC 04 version!

“PIPER” -> ROCK -> SPACE -> REALLY SPACY SHIT -> JAM
interesting version to say the least.
^Both shows at Rosemont were sweet that year. All the fall Piper’s leading up to Piper>Guy Forget were sweet!
Who’s Guy Forget? that’s what I really want to know
Guy Forget was a professional tennis player in the 80’s.
yeah! i kinda wish i had been into Phish more. I had just started my freshman year of college so i was still trying to adjust. we only picked the 2nd night to attend for some reason. i looked at the setlist for Friday’s show on saturday morning and was pretty bummed that i missed that shit!
Piper is similar to a song on Junta, like YEM or Bowie. The studio version sums it up in 4 and a half minutes, but the 12/31/02 Piper must have been great to see…genius song to open with.
Piper…what a song.
So I’m listening to the 2/22/03 DVD right now checking out the piper and was wondering what everybodies thoughts were on this version in comparion to some of the other great pipers from pre-hiatus/ the 04 SPAC version. The audio on the DVD came out so-so and it’s really hard for me to hear all band members, so I’d figure I’d see what all your folk’s input was.
2/22/03 Piper is short.
But the segue into Weekapaug is SOMETHING to write home about.
I never really liked Piper very much. I’d normally skip it when listening to shows. Yesterday Piper finally wormed its way into my heart. (Eeewwwww.) I was listening to 6/26/04. Piper sounded all new to me. I enjoyed it very much. I skipped it at the show also. I was asleep in the grass by the time Friday was over. Piper started, and that was my cue to head for the lot.
If you don’t like Piper then you haven’t heard enough versions of it.
I have to admit, I have not heard many Piper’s…
I have not heard a lot of stuff from the Farmhouse era to be exact.
But I still really, really like Piper.
I also need to listen to more '99.
One of the earliest may have had one of the nicest segues in between songs at the 6/25/97 show. Second set starts with a killer DWD that goes in many directions before finding the Piper groove. This then plays around for a while itself after a verse or two before coming back to the DWD. My buddy and I refer to this as the SuperSet
Everything seems supa after the SuperJam
I was just watching the 12/29/03 dvd and that Piper may be my new favorite. They light it up with that one.
Although I am curious as to where the title comes from. It’s about a worm (kind of), or words, or sailing on words… so who said anything about anyone playing the bagpipes?
HCA is not long, but TIGHT, and flows out of a nice “Gin!”
