Shot this pic of seven turkey vultures (cathartes aura) drying their wings after a heavy rain in a tree a block from my daughter’s house in Jackson NJ. Those wings spans are from 3 to 4 feet across.
Because of or in spite of man’s takeover of the NJ pine forests, the birds of prey in this area have increased in numbers over the past thirty years. Besides the proliferation of Canada Geese, there are more owls, falcons, hawks, bald eagles, and these turkey vultures.
They’re amazing to watch in the air, as they float on the breeze in gentle characteristic circles, but when you see a unch of them on the ground picking as the remains of a deer, my mind flashes all the time to the skeksis from The Dark Crystal.

Any Baltimore fans here? Just snapped this picture of an oriole picking on the oak berries on a tree in my yard. I was just out there edging one of the gardens when this guy was eating and singing louder than the copy of Stunt I was listening to on the outside speakers. (don’t worry, I have Rift as the next CD in the stack)
