Romney doubles Obama’s charitable giving

[b]Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign is releasing a brief summary of 20 years of tax returns on Friday, and his accountant says it will show he gave 13.45 percent of his adjusted gross income to charities.

That’s nearly twice the rate of President Obama, who according to his tax returns from 2000 through 2011 donated just less than 7 percent of his adjusted gross income to charities.[/b]

Mr. Romney’s campaign did not release his returns, but instead had his trustee, Brad Malt, write a blog post giving some details of returns from 1990 through 2009.

The campaign has released Mr. Romney’s 2010 return and, later Friday, will release his 2011 return, which he filed with the IRS earlier in the day.

That return will show Mr. Romney and his wife Ann paid $1.9 million in taxes on income of $13.7 million, for a rate of 14.1 percent, Mr. Malt said. Most of that income is from investments, which are usually taxed at a lower rate than salary or wages.

Mr. Malt said the Romneys would have had an even lower tax burden if they’d claimed the full deduction for all of their charitable giving in 2011, but said they “limited their deduction of charitable contributions to conform to the governor’s statement in August, based upon the January estimate of income, that he paid at least 13 percent in income taxes in each of the last 10 years.”

When charitable contributions and federal and state taxes are combined, it amounted to 38.5 percent of the Romneys’ income, the trustee said.

Mr. Malt said the Romneys have owed taxes in each of the years in question — which contradicts a charge Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, issued earlier this summer.

He’s back. And this time, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright threatens to engulf President Obama in a major scandal - one that could doom his re-election. Edward Klein in his recent biography of Mr. Obama, “The Amateur,” interviewed Mr. Wright about the president’s past. On tape and on the record, Mr. Wright claims that in 2008, the Obama campaign offered $150,000 to buy his silence. If this is true - and I stress if - Mr. Obama may have committed a crime, and if so, he should be prosecuted and sent to prison. Wrightgate could bring down the Obama presidency.

This way he can pump more money to get him elected without appearing on the high donor lists.

But it’s our, yours and mine, dependence on oil, on getting in our cars to drive down to the 7-11 for a pack of smokes whenever we felt the urge, or to drive 400 hundred miles to some abandoned air force base in Maine to listen to some wired music that changed the focus of our need for defense from Russian nukes to protecting ours (and the world’s) oil fields.

At Portsmouth, I was talking to a friend of mine who’s main background is in environmental law about this same issue. The industry of large touring live bands will someday be gone because we’ll run out of ways to fund it. Everyone knows we have a finite amount of oil in the wold, don’t they? And then what? And by oil, I mean the one thing that makes virtually EVERYTHING, not just gas in your cars.

In order to keep our current lifestyles intact, we’ve extended the castle walls to include those resources. The more dependent we become on these resources, the larger our budget for castle walls becomes. Until we all take that responsibility to eliminate needless use of the energy in our own lives, then huge defense budgets will be required to maintain that wasteful lifestyle. We can’t have it both ways.

If you want change, you have to start with yourself. And I’m not talking about throwing away incandescent light bulbs. I’m talking about researching solar power companies in your town and taking yourself off the grid of the major electricity providers. I’m talking about finding ways to re-use things in your home. I’m talking about stretching your legs and your brain instead of your tires and gas tanks.

And now China with its billions of consumers has become a serious competitor for these energy sources as well. Their “defensive” budgets to expand the scope of their castle walls are growing exponentially. We cannot compete with their numbers and are pretty much doomed unless we seriously face changes in the way we look at what we consume.

And this is really the big picture. We’re experiencing an exponential growth in terms of consumption. That means it’s always going to rise, and it’s going to rise faster as time goes on. We’re simply consuming more than we have, and I have no doubt in my mind that the day will come when we run out. And it’ll be too late to do anything.
