Q&A: The Dalai Lama, Tibet and China

With the recent uprising of violence in Tibet (China) the Dalai Lama has said if the Tibetans don’t show restraint he will step down as their political leader.

That being in the news I found this attached older article to be of interest… or not. ;D It should be of interest to Fee… the buddhist prodigy… long past the age of maturity…

Who is the Dalai Lama?
The Dalai Lama is considered the head monk of Tibetan Buddhism and, by tradition, is responsible for governing the Himalayan country. The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born Lhamo Dhondub to a farming family in a northeastern Tibetan village in 1935. Buddhist officials recognized him as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama when he was two years old. Buddhists believe the successive Dalai Lamas form a lineage back to the 14th century.

How does China view the Dalai Lama?
China, which has ruled Tibet with a heavy hand since its forces invaded in 1951, considers the Dalai Lama a separatist and traitor for advocating Tibetan self-rule. The Dalai Lama remains immensely popular in Tibet. The Dalai Lama has led an effective government-in-exile based in India since fleeing his homeland in 1959 amid a failed Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule.

Well Hello Dali!

I think it’s pretty despicable that we as a country will try to “pressure” China on human rights issues with stunts like this, but thanks to economic ties we leave them off the list of the world’s top twenty human rights violations. The way China has been treating Tibet for almost the last sixty years is a shame. I plan on protesting the Summer Olympics at the least. The Chinese have killed at least hundreds of thousands of Tibetan people, are poised to make a mockery of the Buddhist religion and are currently exacting cultural genocide on the people of Tibet. If you can tell, this is a soap box of mine.

Yeah, its gonna be very interesting in China this year,…and years to come.

Communism and Capitalism really don’t work together.

Something’s got to give over there.

As far as the whole Tibet issue,… :-/

The whole world is pretty F’n screwed up right now.

Cultural genocide is happining all over.

^Actually Communism and capitalism CAN work together. One is a way to run government…another is a way to run the economy. Russia has been in absolute turmoil for the last few decades but Putin’s presence and a return to a more militant society has actually improved economic conditions. Not worsened them.

Nancy Pelosi is in India to make a visit with the Dalai Lama on these issues. Which is quite a big deal. I have no idea what effect this will have in the long run but any support for the Tibetans by Western powers is a snuff in to China.

These recent protests have been some of the biggest and most widespread since Chinese takeover. As usual the Chinese won’t let anyone in to see what is going on. However I heard a news report from a team who somehow made it into one of these remote towns. The army showed up and locked the town down with check points and armed soldiers at the ends. They gave an ultimatum that every protester give themselves in by the 25th or they will be hunted down…
