Questionable Live Phish Releases

6/17/04 is without question the worst “official” release.

I won’t argue that.

I was merely highlighting some very good points in an otherwise shows.

This show definitely qualifies as a “questionable Live Phish release,” although I don’t sometimes think of it as that because it was a DVD release.

I’ll steer the discussion in another direction and throw my vote in for a “questionable” release: Live Phish 10. I would think that a lot of people on this board would agree that there are better shows from the summer '94 tour.

The first set from this show, in my opinion, is pretty standard. The “If I Could” is pretty good, but other than that…? The second set is a segue-fest but there are plenty of other shows from this era that are. The filler “Demand > Antelope,” I must admit, is quite good. I love it, actually.

If this is my pre-'95 “hating” coming out, so be it. I don’t care. This thread is dedicated to questionable Live Phish releases and I posted my thoughts in it.

LP10 may be my favorite release of those “original” Live Phish Series.

I love the first set a lot. Just damn well played, nothing crrrrrrrazy.

Hmmm I actually thought that most people think that is one of the best summer '94 shows…

lp10 = 6-22-94? 6/22 has been considered a classic since summer '94!!! :o

7-15-98, 7-10-99 and 7-8-00 are my picks for questionable live phish releases. although all 3 have incredible highlights, none are solid top to bottom.

5-7-94, technically, isn’t a “Summer Tour” show, I don’t think, but it is part of one long-ass tour: April through mid-July. But I like 5-7 more than 6-22. I also like 7-16 more as well. Big Birch, Great Woods, and Finger Lakes are probably on par with 6-22 as well.

I’d be interested to hear what some older fans think of the summer '94 tour.

I know you are not supposed to judge a show by its setlist…

But when a Catapult, Icculus, Avenu, Fluffhead, AND BBJ all appear in one set… I feel there is magic in the air.

Plus the first set has a rippin’ Llama opener, as well as a really good (not best or anything close) Maze and Stash…

I just don’t understand the reasoning for even considering this show.

And I agree with thelot on two instances. 1998-07-15 and 2000-09-08 are both questionable in my book. I enjoy the release of 1999-07-10 though. I realize it isn’t an amazing show, but I do enjoy listening to it front to back. Both sets start off really strong IMO, and kind of teeter off towards the end.

Obviously there are better choices for a 1999 release, but I am not dissapointed with their choice.

6/22 is right up there with 5/7, 7/8, 7/13 and 7/16…definitely one of the best from that amazing tour.

out of the 3 i listed 7/10 is by far the strongest…the highlights certainly outshine the low lights. however, i think 7/13, 7/15, oswego or 7/25 would’ve been a better choice for that tour. 7/10 would’ve been my 6th or 7th choice.

thelot - in your opinion, is 6/22:

  1. the best show from the April-July tour?
  2. the most obvious choice for an official release?

#2…the 2nd set screams release me! sooo many incredible shows from that tour, but i must say 5/7 and 7/13 are my two favorites.

I actually love 7/15/98 and it was one of my favorite shows from the entire summer tour…

I definitely listen to it often.

But IMO, it’s only my 5th or 6th favorite show from the U.S. summer tour (not counting Lemonwheel).

im not a huge fan of 7/15/98

Did I write read that right??

that’s the only part of the show that is salvageable.
aside from that, its a slop fest.

I dunno…I’ve always liked the “BOAF” from this show. The “Wolfman’s” hits a nice peak but is too short for my liking.

But yes, other than the novelty of the “California Love” jam, the second set is pretty average jam-wise.

i like the gin filler

I usually turn it off when Trey finishes Guyute…

What a buzzkill.

Huh, the second set is my favorite part of the show. But this gives me an idea for another thread…

I wonder what this “idea” was.

I think it was the “substitute a Live Phish release” or something like that.

Anyway, to sort of “re-hash” the subject, I think for a release to be questionable you have to compare it shows surrounding it on a given tour while trying not to compare it to the entire Phish live show catalog.

By using that criteria, it makes me wonder why they released 7/10/99 and 7/15/98. You could call summer '99 and summer '98 “average tours” by Phish standards, but you can’t disagree that there were stronger shows on both tours. Although don’t get me wrong: I love both shows and listen to them frequently.
