I don’t think Kevin’s choices are any less stellar than the Dick’s Picks series. Personally, I think most of Kevin’s are actually better. Although most are above average shows, very few, if any, of the Dick’s Picks would make my list of favorite/greatest Dead shows.
Well, I am sorry I even gave this one a thought for this thread. It is quite obvious I just have not listened to it enough. But with all the late’95 I have been listening to lately, spurred on by two great releases, I decided to give this one another go.
And wow! I couldn’t have been more wrong. This one slipped by my sight I suppose, because it is a really great show.
The first set starts off a bit weak, which may have been my reasoning for putting this show down. Not entirely sure. But by the time FOAM comes around, this show is a smoker from then on.
I actually found myself getting up to dance during many parts of this show, especially the Split(there may(MAY) have been some air guitar taboot), Frankenstein, the “reprise” of Tweezer, and Halleys.
The Split is a real rager, and the ending is something different, that is for sure. Almost a stop/start jam, but just not quite. And a Tela to follow was perfect… Can you ever have too much Tela?
But the second set is where the gold is. The Tweezer Ho sandwich is really delicious, and the “reprise” of Tweezer may be my favorite part of the show. Well, that, or the entire Halleys>NICU>Slave to the Traffic Light.
Slave has always been one of my favorite songs, and I feel it is a perfect period to a Phish show/set. The Halleys really went to some different places, and the NICU just picked up from there. Just really damn excellent playing.
So all in all, I am sorry for even mentioning this show in this thread. It is great and another fine example of Live Phish.
I had a 102 degree fever this night.
Rockin’ 4 huge layers of clothing with a inter coat inside, too!
As far as December '95 goes, it really is the only one to incorporate segues in and out of songs, and they do it saw flawlessly.
Great show.

Wasn’t there some argument I started about first vs. second sets, and you specifically said that you always listened to the first set of this show more than the second??
Old news, but thought I’d respond to the comment about Kevin, not being Dick Latvala. Some old info on the man behind Dick’s picks that also set him apart from Kevin Shapiro. Probably the biggest difference is Kevin’s alive and Dick is dead. Dick Latvala (26 July 1943 - 6 August 1999) died following a heart attack at age 56. The series Dick’s Pick’s was continued after Latvala’s death, with later volumes being selected by David Lemieux. So how does Kevin compare to Dick’s replacement, Lemieux?
I always use two punctuation marks when I’m questioning or exclaiming, guy. It wasn’t meant to call you out, I just wondered if you had changed your mind.
I don’t remember if we debated this already, but does anybody else feel that the Coney Island DVD/CD was a questionable release?? They released it because they had the nice video footage and all, but almost any other show on that tour would be preferable. Plus of all the shows to give the full DVD set treatment to, why couldn’t it have been one of the recent Live Phish Video releases, like 12/29/97 or the Fall '95 shows??
I don’t know if it’s been discussed in depth here, but it’s definately been mentioned before. I doubt anyone would disagree with what you said though. Sure, it’s great sound and great shots, but I’d rather see a single camera, with distant shots cough 12-29-97 cough than what they released on DVD.
