Questionable Live Phish Releases

That show was going to be a release no matter what. 6.17 and Coventry are the two shows they hired the professional video crew for on the last tour. It has little to do with how memorable or good the show was.

Will, the Moma–>Free doesn’t do anything for you??

^
That’s a good point.

I’ve only heard this show once, and it happened to be when they rebroadcast it in theatres last July. The “Moma -> Free” was the highlight of the show for me, and it VERY much delighted the 3/4 full crowd inside the theatre.

I like listening to entire shows. Not parts.

Moma>Free is OK… But does not make the show.

Of course it doesn’t “make” the show. No one said it did.

But it is the highlight of an otherwise ‘blah’ show.

Well my point being… By the time I get to the Moma>Free, I’m probably ready to switch shows/gears.

I think I listened to this show about half a dozen times, and have probably put it away for good.

Fair enough. I’ve only seen/heard this show once and there’s a good chance I’ll never listen to it again.

I don’t want to put words into Will’s mouth, but I think that our point in saying it’s a questionable release is that it’s not that good of a show. Certainly every Phish show has some good parts to it; in fact every few months I will bust this DVD out and watch the parts I like. But while the Moma -> Free is pretty cool, I honestly think that the rest of the show is forgettable. The segue from 46 Days to Possum is cool, but the jams just weren’t coming that night and the energy and playing weren’t there either.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but any of the other shows on the summer '04 show would have been preferable, and given that they’re been releasing videos of old shows from the mid 90s, I would be surprised if they didn’t eventually post the videos for some of the post-hiatus shows because you know they’ve got some kind of video for those.

6/17/04 is without question the worst “official” release.

I won’t argue that.

I was merely highlighting some very good points in an otherwise shows.

This show definitely qualifies as a “questionable Live Phish release,” although I don’t sometimes think of it as that because it was a DVD release.

I’ll steer the discussion in another direction and throw my vote in for a “questionable” release: Live Phish 10. I would think that a lot of people on this board would agree that there are better shows from the summer '94 tour.

The first set from this show, in my opinion, is pretty standard. The “If I Could” is pretty good, but other than that…? The second set is a segue-fest but there are plenty of other shows from this era that are. The filler “Demand > Antelope,” I must admit, is quite good. I love it, actually.

If this is my pre-'95 “hating” coming out, so be it. I don’t care. This thread is dedicated to questionable Live Phish releases and I posted my thoughts in it.

LP10 may be my favorite release of those “original” Live Phish Series.

I love the first set a lot. Just damn well played, nothing crrrrrrrazy.

Hmmm I actually thought that most people think that is one of the best summer '94 shows…

lp10 = 6-22-94? 6/22 has been considered a classic since summer '94!!! :o

7-15-98, 7-10-99 and 7-8-00 are my picks for questionable live phish releases. although all 3 have incredible highlights, none are solid top to bottom.

5-7-94, technically, isn’t a “Summer Tour” show, I don’t think, but it is part of one long-ass tour: April through mid-July. But I like 5-7 more than 6-22. I also like 7-16 more as well. Big Birch, Great Woods, and Finger Lakes are probably on par with 6-22 as well.

I’d be interested to hear what some older fans think of the summer '94 tour.

I know you are not supposed to judge a show by its setlist…

But when a Catapult, Icculus, Avenu, Fluffhead, AND BBJ all appear in one set… I feel there is magic in the air.

Plus the first set has a rippin’ Llama opener, as well as a really good (not best or anything close) Maze and Stash…

I just don’t understand the reasoning for even considering this show.

And I agree with thelot on two instances. 1998-07-15 and 2000-09-08 are both questionable in my book. I enjoy the release of 1999-07-10 though. I realize it isn’t an amazing show, but I do enjoy listening to it front to back. Both sets start off really strong IMO, and kind of teeter off towards the end.

Obviously there are better choices for a 1999 release, but I am not dissapointed with their choice.

6/22 is right up there with 5/7, 7/8, 7/13 and 7/16…definitely one of the best from that amazing tour.

out of the 3 i listed 7/10 is by far the strongest…the highlights certainly outshine the low lights. however, i think 7/13, 7/15, oswego or 7/25 would’ve been a better choice for that tour. 7/10 would’ve been my 6th or 7th choice.

thelot - in your opinion, is 6/22:

  1. the best show from the April-July tour?
  2. the most obvious choice for an official release?

#2…the 2nd set screams release me! sooo many incredible shows from that tour, but i must say 5/7 and 7/13 are my two favorites.

I actually love 7/15/98 and it was one of my favorite shows from the entire summer tour…

I definitely listen to it often.

But IMO, it’s only my 5th or 6th favorite show from the U.S. summer tour (not counting Lemonwheel).

im not a huge fan of 7/15/98
