Friday, 10/30/1998 Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas, NV
Soundcheck: Dog Log
Set 1: Wilson, Meat > Scent of a Mule > Back at the Chicken Shack > Scent of a Mule, Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress, Run Like an Antelope, Guelah Papyrus, The Lizards, Cavern
Set 2: Stash -> Manteca -> Tweezer -> NICU > Jam > Prince Caspian > Golgi Apparatus
Encore: Driver, Free Bird
Notes: This show included the Phish debut of Back at the Chicken Shack, the first Long Cool Woman since the first Phish show, December 2, 1983 (1,204 shows), and the first Manteca since November 14, 1995 (218 shows). Before Long Cool Woman, Trey remarked that “they tell us that this is the exact day†of the band’s fifteenth anniversary, though later research revealed this to be incorrect. Fishman teased a return to Long Cool Woman before Antelope but quickly aborted. Tweezer subsequently included Manteca and You Better Believe It Baby teases. The entire second set and encore, as well as Antelope, was included as filler on Live Phish 16.
Sunday, 04/05/1998 Providence Civic Center, Providence, RI
Set 1: The Oh Kee Pa Ceremony > You Enjoy Myself, Theme From the Bottom > McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters, Bathtub Gin -> Cities > Sparkle, Split Open and Melt
Set 2: Down with Disease, Ya Mar -> Prince Caspian > Maze -> Shafty -> Possum -> Jam -> Cavern
Encore: Bold As Love
Notes: This show included the debut of Shafty, which was then briefly teased by Mike and Trey in Possum. The funky jam in between Possum and Cavern featured some stage banter from Trey about the funk jams the band had been playing. Accordingly, Cavern was played in a slower, funkier manner than usual and included some of the older, alternate lyrics.
It’s a real tough call. I mean 4/5/98 has got the OKP > YEM opener, Theme > McGrupp, Gin > Cities, Split and thats just set one! 10/30/98 has got the Wilson, Meat > Mule > Chicken Shack > Mule, Antelope and a Lizards tacked on for good measure. 10/30/98 has the better 2nd set OVERALL, but the Possum > Cavern is INFECTIOUS!
I went with 4/5/98, again, not by much. Alot of these match-ups are great. It’s been fun to revisit shows you haven’t heard in awhile.
Plus how can you beat a show that includes this line by Trey “we’re about done so if you want to leave go ahead and go, but we’re going to hang out and keep playing this funk groove for a while”?
I just listened to this Vegas show again. It’s great, really great, but I don’t know if it would even make my top 25 based mostly on personal preferences. In fact I like the night before better.
