Went with 12.11.99 because I feel like it’s a stronger overall show from start to finish.
Damn, surprised to see so many people taking Philly over MSG. 1998-12-29 has basically 3 opening songs to kick off the night. The Split is nasty, especially from Trey. The entire second set is so smooth and contains one of the best 2001 from any year which melts into a well placed Boogie On. The YEM is one of the best from 1998 and then a Divided Sky encore. It shouldn’t even be a contest.
Sally > Ghost doesn’t make the whole show better. It’s one hell of a sequence but this tournament is about overall shows not parts of shows.

i was at the msg, and it was a really good show…loved the 2001 and divided encore, but that philly show is top notch and gets my vote 
Yes. MSG '98 brought the heat!
I’m surprised that so many people are taking MSG over Philly. Yes the MSG show has ‘basically 3 opening songs’ to kick off the night, but Philly has what I would consider a monster 2nd set to kick off the night. The actual 2nd sets from both of these shows rival each other no doubt about that, but the first set from Philly destroys the first set from MSG IMO. That first set doesn’t do anything for me outside of the SOAM. I could have gone home happy after the first set from Philly. I could also used the ‘overall shows not parts of shows’ argument to defen my pick too. It’s been a long time since I’ve listened to this MSG show, but last time I did I think I thought “this Free and Limb by Limb suck…way too spacey”. So for me that leaves one mid-1st set SOAM and the last half/encore of the 2nd set of MSG opposed to the whole Philly show.
That being said I’m not trying to bust your balls, just wanted to offer my dissenting opinion. I know it’s in good fun and all about personal tastes. That’s why I love the Phish so much. And plus if we all agreed there’d be no internet!

This is the most intriguing first round matchup, IMO.
12/11 as a #7 seed? It’s coach should be pissed and raise hell with the committee. Dewkie V would be screaming his head off right now.

I completely disagree! 
Other than Cypress which is in a league of it’s own, 12/11/99 is by far my favorite show of '99…whereas 12/29 is nowhere near being my favorite show from '98.
