Release the Lockerbie Bomber?

Do you think Scotland was right to release Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi (the Lockerbie bomber) on compassionate grounds?

Background: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/8211605.stm

that’s easy. i have no idea.

no

If he did do it, it’s really fucked up.

There are a couple articles out today that say some kind of deal was made.
Most of them say for petroleum $$$.
Rumors of completely monopolizing Libya’s petroleum resources, with the UK & US being in charge of it.

Who knows?

It’s pretty crazy. If I had family members killed by him I’d be rightfully pissed.
Compassion is nice though.

Something doesn’t add up.

If he did it, then no. I think they should just let his family visit him.

Do you think the people who gave him a hero’s welcome at the airport did so because:

a.) They believed he was wrongly imprisoned?

b.) they are proud of what he did/was convicted of doing?

If the answer is “a”, OK. Something tells me it was “b”.

Compassion is rarely a two way street. And the term is usually applied to actions that are anything but compassionate.

^^
B, no question.

Where’s the “I don’t give a shit” option?

I don’t know if this is the same b/c I’m not well versed in all that legal mumbo-jumbo, but I saw this morning where the state of California denied Susan Atkins parole - she has terminal brain cancer. She’s been in prison almost 40 years and will most likely die there (another hearing in 3 years).

Is what she did worse than what the Lockerbie bomber did? Has she paid her due to society and should she be allowed to die with dignity with any family/friends she has?

No offense but how exactly do you “die with dignity”? I hear the term all the time and it really doesn’t mean anything. Do you dress up in a nice robe and slippers with a cup of tea and sit in a nice rocking chair and then if you die in that position, you just died with dignity? Most people dying by flopping facefirst on the floor and after foaming at the mouth in bed or something. It’s death…who cares how dignified you were. And besides, I’m pretty sure they allow family visits for this kind of thing. Let them visit her in jail.

Of course, as always, it’s a case of different states and different judges having different leniency for the same crime. Goes on all the time and it’s rarely fair.

Does she deserve to die with dignity?

I still want to know what “die with dignity” means. Is dying peacefully in a jail cell considered to be dying with dignity? For me, I couldn’t care less where I keel over as long as I’m not sitting on the crapper when it happens.

Actually, scratch that…I’d like it to happen while I’m on top of some building and my dead carcass topples over the edge of the roof and falls 200 stories before crashing to the ground. Now that would be awesome.

Either that, or I’d like to die in a meth lab explosion just so all my friends and family would read about it and say “What the fuck??”

Her victim sure as hell didn’t, so IMO, I would say no.

“Dying with dignity” exists. There’s a difference between dying at home with your feet propped up in your Sunday best…as opposed to dying with a pants full of poop in the local crackhouse.

^See, I don’t see a difference between either of those. You’re dead. Who the fuck cares.

In one sense, you’re right…it doesn’t matter. Bug.

But some people take how they leave this earth very seriously…I think that’s a personal choice that in a lot of instances you should respect.

^If anything, it’s more of an issue with your family. Your family wants to be able to tell people that you “died with dignity” in your home rather in some gutter somewhere. Almost kind of like some arrogance-in-death kind of thing. I don’t get it. But there’s a lot of hangups that people have about death that I don’t get…

apparently the prime minister does…
